In this work, we propose an obstacle model to be used while simulating wireless sensor networks. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such an integrated and systematic obstacle model appears. We define several types of obstacles that can be found inside the deployment area of a wireless sensor network and provide a categorization of these obstacles, based on their nature (physical and communication obstacles), their shape, as well as their nature to change over time. In light of this obstacle model, we conduct extensive simulations in order to study the effects of obstacles on the performance of representative data propagation protocols for wireless sensor networks. Our findings show that obstacle presence has a significant impact on protocol performance. Also, we demonstrate the effect of each obstacle type on different protocols, thus providing the network designer with advice on which protocol is best to use.

In many applications the image registration task turns out to be a fundamental prerequisite for any further processing and analysis. In the proposed paper a new efficient technique is presented, appropriate for registering images which are translated and rotated versions of a reference image. The technique consists of two main parts: an efficiently implemented prewhitening part, and an iterative part which yields the unknown displacements after a few iterations. The cross-correlation operations involved in the iterative part are performed efficiently via a new scheme based on a proper partitioning of the images and the use of the FFT. Note that this efficient scheme is also applicable to the conventional spatial cross-correlation method. The new registration technique exhibits a superior performance as compared to the conventional cross-correlation method.

With the increasing popularity of the web, some new web technologies emerged and introduced dynamics to web applications, in comparison to HTML, as a static programming language. JavaScript is the language that provided a dynamic web site which actively communicates with users. JavaScript is used in today's web applications as a client script language and on the server side. The JavaScript language supports the Model View Controller (MVC) architecture that maintains a readable code and clearly separates parts of the program code. The traffic in metro and core networks is forecasted to grow in volume but also in dynamicity, and the inefficiency of WDM optical networks drove research efforts on flex-grid technologies. Flex-grid networks support variable spectrum connections as a way to increase spectral efficiency and support future transmission rates. In addition, the use of flexible transponders further increases the flexibility of such networks, bringing closer the optical and the IP layers. The joint planning and operation of both layers becomes crucial to reduce the capital and operational costs. To this end, in this paper we examine the planning problem of a multilayer (ML) flex-grid network from the perspective of capital expenditure taking into account modular IP/MPLS routers at the optical network edges along with tunable optical transponders. We propose a concise ILP formulation that jointly solves the ML planning problem. The formulation is quite generic and can be used for flex- and fixed-grid networks employing flexible or fixed transponders.
