EEG emotion recognition framework based on invariant wavelet scattering convolution network

EEG signals for real-time emotion identification are crucial for affective computing and human-computer interaction. The current emotion recognition models, which rely on a small number of emotion classes and stimuli like music and images in controlled lab conditions, have poor ecological validity. Furthermore, identifying relevant EEG signal features is crucial for efficient emotion identification. According to the complexity, non-stationarity, and variation nature of EEG signals, which make it challenging to identify relevant features to categorize and identify emotions, a novel approach for feature extraction and classification concerning EEG signals is suggested based on invariant wavelet scattering transform (WST) and support vector machine algorithm (SVM). The WST is a new time-frequency domain equivalent to a deep convolutional network. It produces scattering feature matrix representations that are stable against time-warping deformations, noise-resistant, and time-shift invariant existing in EEG signals. So, small, difficult-to-measure variations in the amplitude and duration of EEG signals can be captured. As a result, it addresses the limitations of the previous feature extraction approaches, which are unstable and sensitive to time-shift variations. In this paper, the zero, first, and second order features from DEAP datasets are obtained by performing the WST with two deep layers. Then, the PCA method is used for dimensionality reduction. Finally, the extracted features are fed as inputs for different classifiers. In the classification step, the SVM classifier is utilized with different classification algorithms such as k-nearest neighbours (KNN), random forest (RF), and AdaBoost classifier. This research employs a principal component analysis (PCA) approach to reduce the high dimensionality of scattering characteristics and increase the computational efficiency of our classifiers. The Equilibrium Optimiser(EO)has been demonstrated to be one of the metaheuristic algorithms that can effectively solve global optimisation *** the paradox between exploration and exploitation operations while enhancing the ability to jump out of the local optimum are two key points to be addressed in EO *** alleviate these limitations,an EO variant named adaptive elite-guided Equilibrium Optimiser(AEEO)is ***,the adaptive elite-guided search mechanism enhances the balance between exploration and *** modified mutualism phase reinforces the information interaction among particles and local optima *** cooperation of these two mechanisms boosts the overall performance of the basic *** AEEO is subjected to competitive experiments with state-of-the-art algorithms and modified algorithms on 23 classical benchmark functions and IEE CEC 2017 function test *** results demonstrate that AEEO outperforms several well-performing EO variants,DE variants,PSO variants,SSA variants,and GWO variants in terms of convergence speed and *** addition,the AEEO algorithm is used for the edge server(ES)placement problem in mobile edge computing(MEC)*** experimental results show that the author’s approach outperforms the representative approaches compared in terms of access latency and deployment cost.

Sophisticated cyber threats are seen on Online Social Networks (OSNs) social media accounts automated to imitate human behaviours has an impactful effect on distorting public thoughts and opinions. OSNs are weaponized to diffuse deception, misinformation, and malicious activities, that forms a serious threat to society. The deceptive nature of imitating human behaviour has become a challenging and crucial task to detect automated accounts (socialbots). This research, however, proposes a hybrid metaheuristic optimisation algorithm for socialbot detection. Specifically, a hybrid B-Hill Climbing (B-HC) optimisation algorithm works in tandem with a k-NN nearest neighbour classifier to accurately select a relevant feature subset. It is applied to be tested for fake followers account on Twitter data. Experimental results showed that the proposed method is better than the traditional and the latest feature selection techniques as well as the rule-set methods. The B-HC alongside with k-NN method achieved promising results using only relevant feature subset. © 2023 IEEE.

In Federated Learning (FL), devices that participate in the training usually have heterogeneous resources, i.e., energy availability. In current deployments of FL, devices that do not fulfill certain hardware requirements are often dropped from the collaborative training. However, dropping devices in FL can degrade training accuracy and introduce bias or unfairness. Several works have tackled this problem on an algorithm level, e.g., by letting constrained devices train a subset of the server neural network (NN) model. However, it has been observed that these techniques are not effective w.r.t. accuracy. Importantly, they make simplistic assumptions about devices' resources via indirect metrics such as multiply accumulate (MAC) operations or peak memory requirements. We observe that memory access costs (that are currently not considered in simplistic metrics) have a significant impact on the energy consumption. In this work, for the first time, we consider on-device accelerator design for FL with heterogeneous devices. We utilize compressed arithmetic formats and approximate computing, targeting to satisfy limited energy budgets. Using a hardware-aware energy model, we observe that, contrary to the state of the art's moderate energy reduction, our technique allows for lowering the energy requirements (by 4×) while maintaining higher accuracy. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

Data Augmentation (DA) is an effective strategy to increase model generalisation. In Natural Language Processing (NLP), DA remains in its early stages, primarily due to the inherent sensitivity of textual data, which complicates the augmentation process. These complexities are further increased in multilingual contexts, as DA techniques effective in one language may not yield comparable results in others. As a result, manually identifying optimal DA techniques that preserve semantic integrity and are language agnostic remains a significant challenge. It emphasises the necessity for automating the text DA process with Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), which offers a promising approach by calculating word importance scores to effectively guide the augmentation. In this paper, a comprehensive review of existing approaches in auto-text DA is presented, beginning with an exploration of the concept of auto-text DA, followed by a discussion on its cross-lingual applications, and concluding with the integration of XAI for semantic preservation. The paper highlights the critical need for further research to enhance the effectiveness and applicability of XAI in auto-text DA, enabling its use across diverse languages. © 2025 IEEE.

Diverse critical data, such as location information and driving patterns, can be collected by IoT devices in vehicular networks to improve driving experiences and road safety. However, drivers are often reluctant to share their data due to privacy concerns. The Federated Vehicular Network (FVN) is a promising technology that tackles these concerns by transmitting model parameters instead of raw data, thereby protecting the privacy of drivers. Nevertheless, the performance of Federated Learning (FL) in a vehicular network depends on the joining ratio, which is restricted by the limited available wireless resources. To address these challenges, this paper proposes to apply Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) to improve the joining ratio in a FVN. Specifically, a vehicle selection and transmission power control algorithm is developed to exploit the power domain differences in the received signal to ensure the maximum number of vehicles capable of joining the FVN. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed NOMA-based strategy increases the joining ratio and significantly enhances the performance of the FVN. The advent of the Internet has significantly stream-lined daily tasks through the rapid increase of online services. Everyday activities, such as purchasing goods and scheduling appointments with healthcare professionals, have become more speedy, efficient and user-friendly with the integration of the Internet. The continuous improvement of online services has led to many people moving towards digital activities. As a result, it has heightened the recording of personal and payment transaction data across various storage mediums, including databases and log files. The protection and regulation of this sensitive data are imperative, aligning with the guidelines outlined in GDPR and PCI-DSS compliances. Recognizing exposed personal data poses a considerable challenge. This research introduces a novel approach to identifying payment card industry data (PCI) and personally identifiable information (PII). The research project proposes a machine learning-based text classification model utilizing the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model to discern PII and PCI data within a given text. The CNN model has been constructed and compared against Naive Bayes, Gradient Boost, Random Forest, and Support Vector Machine (SVM) models. The CNN model achieved the highest accuracy at 0.96 (96%). Additionally, the F1 scores for each class were significant, with PII scoring 0.94, PCI scoring 0.95, and Normal scoring 0.99. Following the model's construction and training, it was employed with the saved tokenizer's word indexes and label encoders in the developed classification tool. This tool successfully delivered the promised results, identifying exposed PII and PCI data. © 2024 IEEE.

The BART model is an advanced adaptation of transformers introduced by Facebook. It has incorporated elements from both BERT and GPT transformers, enabling significant advancements in language understanding and general speech processing. Utilizing both encoder and decoder components, BART proves versatile for various tasks, including translation, text completion, automatic sentence generation, entity recognition, sentiment analysis, and more. In this study, we focus on the study of pretrained models, BART and a modified version called distilbart, in the context of Zero-Shot Text Classification. In the experimental study we dive into the Zero-Shot technique applied to various pretrained Transformers. Our analysis demonstrates that, depending on the Model we utilize, we can achieve F1 scores of up to 88%, showcasing the model's effectiveness in discerning classes for this Sentiment Analysis problem using the Zero-Shot Text Classification technique. © 2023 IEEE.
