The hybridization of heuristics methods has been proposed in the meta-heuristics research community as a way to overcome limitations of single meta-heuristics. Although a priori there is no guarantee that the resulting hybrid heuristic would outperform stand alone heuristics, in general better results can be found for classes of instances of the optimization problem under study. One promising family of hybridization algorithms is that of population based heuristics with local search heuristics. In this paper we present a high level hybridization of Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and Tabu Search (TS), denoted GA+TS algorithm, for scheduling in computational grids. In the job scheduling problem, the objective is to efficiently compute a planning of incoming jobs to available machines in the Grid system so that the system performance is optimized. Our GA+TS high level hybrid algorithm runs first the GA flow, until a stopping condition is met, and then passes the best output solution in input as starting solution to TS algorithm for further improvement;the flow of TS is then executed. The objective is thus to sequence the calls of GA and TS in a chain that yields to efficient Grid schedulers that would eventually perform better than the same meta-heuristics used as simple schedulers without any additional support and improvement mechanism of the local solutions. We evaluated the proposed hybrid algorithm using different grid scenarios generated by a grid simulator. The computational results showed that the hybrid GA+TS algorithm outperforms both the GA and TS for some classes of instances of the Grid scheduling problem. © 2011 IEEE.

The recent emergence of user generated content requires new content creation tools that will be both easy to learn and easy to use. These new tools should enable the user to construct new high-quality content with minimum effort;it is essential to allow existing multimedia content to be reused as building blocks when creating new content. In this work we present a new tool for automatically constructing virtual worlds with minimum user intervention. Users can create these worlds by drawing a simple sketch, or by using interactively segmented 2D objects from larger images. The system receives as a query the sketch or the segmented image, and uses it to find similar 3D models that are stored in a Content Centric Network. The user selects a suitable model from the retrieved models, and the system uses it to automatically construct a virtual 3D world.

Collection, processing, storage and maintenance of samples to facilitate long-term cohort studies in biobanks, requires a system to manage samples in an effective way to prevent sample mix up and loss. Sample identification and tracking system aims to reserve data on the samples at all the times, hence RFID technology is employed. This technology allows information to be stored on the tags attached to tubes containing samples. A system is proposed, designed and prototype in the Prostate Cancer research Consortium biobank. © 2011 IEEE.

The paper presents a novel automatic early warning system to remotely monitor areas of archaeological and cultural interest from the risk of fire. Since these areas have been treasured and tended for very long periods of time, they are usually surrounded by old and valuable vegetation or situated close to forest regions, which exposes them to an increased risk of fire. The proposed system takes advantage of recent advances in multi-sensor surveillance technologies, using optical and infrared cameras, wireless sensor networks capable of monitoring different modalities (e.g. temperature and humidity) as well as local weather stations on the deployment site. The signals collected from these sensors are transmitted to a monitoring centre, which employs intelligent computer vision and pattern recognition algorithms as well as data fusion techniques to automatically analyze sensor information. The system is capable of generating automatic warning signals for local authorities whenever a dangerous situation arises, as well as estimating the propagation of the fire based on the fuel model of the area and other important parameters such as wind speed, slope, and aspect of the ground surface. © 2011 EURASIP.

An appropriate and understandable data visualization is a key feature for the usability of a data mining system. The proper visualization methods for data exploration increase the whole acceptability of the system and proper selection of the further data processing tasks. This paper introduces a framework for visualization of results as it is being implemented in the European project ADMIRE (Advanced Data Mining and Integration research for Europe). The feasibility of the framework for distributed systems is presented on a real data mining and integration scenario. We describe two visualization components fully implemented and deployed in the distributed environment. The first one is implemented on the ADMIRE Gateway and is processing input data and producing information required by the second component residing on the ADMIRE Workbench, which provides the actual graphical visualization. The ADMIRE Gateway and Workbench are two basic components of the distributed ADMIRE Platform. © 2011 MIPRO.

In this paper, the problem of controlling and stabilizing rapidly time-varying nonlinear unknown systems is being investigated. We propose a new scheme that incorporates Multiple Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) Identification Models into an indirect adaptive fuzzy technique. By using this approach, we increase the possibilities to produce a more accurate estimation at every step for the parameters of the unkown plant than in the case that only one identification model is used. One feedback linearization controller corresponds to each identification model, designed according to a pre-specified reference model. The controller to be applied is determined at every instant by the model which best approximates the plant. This is achieved by using a switching rule with a suitable performance index. Lyapunov stability theory is used in order to obtain the adaptive law for the multiple models parameters and to ensure the asymptotic stability of the system also. A modification in this adaptive law keeps the control input away from singularities. The effectiveness and the advantages of the proposed method are demonstrated by controlling an inverted pendulum with rapidly time-varying parameters.

During the last decades, explicit finite element approximate inverse preconditioning methods have been extensively used for solving efficiently sparse linear systems on multiprocessor and multicomputer systems. New parallel computational techniques are proposed for the parallelization of explicit finite element approximate inverse methods, based on the concept of the "fish bone" computational approach, and explicit preconditioned conjugate gradient type methods, implemented in OpenMP for multicore systems. Finally, numerical results for the performance of the finite element explicit approximate inverse preconditioning for solving characteristic two dimensional boundary value problems on multicore computer systems are presented. Theoretical estimates on speedups and efficiency are also presented.

Scheduling in traditional distributed systems has been mainly studied for system performance parameters without data transmission requirements. With the emergence of Data Grids (DGs) and Data Centers, data-aware scheduling has become a major research issue. DGs arise quite naturally to support needs of scientific communities to share, access, process, and manage large data collections geographically distributed. In fact, DGs can be seen as precursors of Data Centers of Cloud Computing platforms, which serve as basis for collaboration at large scale. In such computational infrastructures, the large amount of data to be efficiently processed is a real challenge. One of the key issues contributing to the efficiency of massive processing is the scheduling with data transmission requirements. Data-aware scheduling, although similar in nature with Grid scheduling, is giving rise to the definition of a new family of optimization problems. New requirements such as data transmission, decoupling of data from processing, data replication, data access and security are the basis for the definition of a whole taxonomy of data scheduling problems from an optimization perspective. In this work we present the modelling of such requirements and define data scheduling problems. We exemplify the methodology for the case of data-ware independent batch task scheduling and present several heuristic resolution methods for the problem. © 2011 IEEE.

We consider the characterization of muscle fatigue through noninvasive sensing mechanism such as surface electromyography (SEMG). While changes in the properties of SEMG signals with respect to muscle fatigue have been reported in the literature, the large variation in these signals across different individuals makes the task of modeling and classification of SEMG signals challenging. Indeed, the variation in SEMG parameters from subject to subject creates differences in the data distribution. In this paper, we propose a transfer learning framework based on the multi-source domain adaptation methodology for detecting different stages of fatigue using SEMG signals, that addresses the distribution differences. In the proposed framework, the SEMG data of a subject represent a domain;data from multiple subjects in the training set form the multiple source domains and the test subject data form the target domain. SEMG signals are predominantly different in conditional probability distribution across subjects. The key feature of the proposed framework is a novel weighting scheme that addresses the conditional probability distribution differences across multiple domains (subjects). We have validated the proposed framework on Surface Electromyogram signals collected from 8 people during a fatigue-causing repetitive gripping activity. Comprehensive experiments on the SEMG data set demonstrate that the proposed method improves the classification accuracy by 20% to 30% over the cases without any domain adaptation method and by 13% to 30% over the existing state-of-the-art domain adaptation methods. Digital watermarking has drawn extensive interest as a means of protecting digital contents from unauthorized copying. This paper proposes a robust audio watermarking scheme based on the Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) for copyright protection of digital audio data. The watermarking scheme transforms the original audio into the frequency domain. The magnitude spectrum of the original audio is divided into an arbitrary number of segments and the energy of each segment is calculated. Watermarks are then embedded into most prominent peaks of the highest energy segment of the original audio. Watermarks are extracted by performing the inverse of the watermark embedding process. Simulation results indicate that our proposed watermarking scheme resists various attacks such as noise addition, cropping, re-sampling, re-quantization, and MP3 compression. Moreover, it outperforms Cox's method in terms of imperceptibility, while keeping comparable robustness with the Cox's method. Its SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) values range from 20 dB to 31 dB, in contrast to Cox's method whose SNRs range from only 11 dB to 23 dB.
