The expansion of the World Wide Web has led to a state where a vast amount of Internet users face and have to overcome the major problem of discovering desired information. It is inevitable that hundreds of web pages and weblogs are generated daily or changing on a daily basis. The main problem that arises from the continuous generation and alteration of web pages is the discovery of useful information, a task that becomes difficult even for the experienced internet users. Many mechanisms have been constructed and presented in order to overcome the puzzle of information discovery on the Internet and they are mostly based on crawlers which are browsing the WWW, downloading pages and collect the information that might be of user interest. In this manuscript we describe a mechanism that fetches web pages that include news articles from major news portals and blogs. This mechanism is constructed in order to support tools that are used to acquire news articles from all over the world, process them and present them back to the end users in a personalized manner.

In this paper we present an efficient system that processes HTML pages in order to extract the useful images from them. The proposed mechanism is template independent and is focalized on HTML pages that include news articles from major portals and blogs. As useful images we define the pictures that are relevant to the news report. In order to extract the image objects of the article we deconstruct the HTML page to its DOM model and we apply a set of algorithms in order to clean and correct the HTML code, locate and characterize each node of the DOM model and finally keep the nodes that are characterized as useful nodes. The proposed mechanism is applied as a subsystem of peRSSonal, a web tool that is used to obtain news articles from all over the world, process them and present them back to the end users in a personalized manner. The role of the mechanism is to feed peRSSonal's database with digital images for browsing and searching purposes. We present the basic algorithms and experimental results on the efficiency of the proposed implementation.

There are several technical or technological field, which borrowed inspirations or hints from nature. This way it could be interesting to study, how a multicellular organism develops, by consecutive cell divisions, differentiations and proliferation, from a single cell. This development could be regarded as a decompression process of a highly compressed database. Following and mimicking this procedure we might be able to create a similar database or image processing transformation and compression method. The aim of our research is, finding the method how certain information is stored in the genome, which relates to the physical location and type of each cell of the body. Finding any such relationship, could help us to develop new image transformation and compression method. ©2010 IEEE.

3GPP has standardized the use of forward error correction for the provision of reliable data transmission in the mobile multicast framework. In this paper we present a study of the impact of application layer forward error correction on power control during mobile multicast transmission. The evaluation is performed with the aid of a novel scheme that allows the simulation of FEC impact on both streaming delivery and download delivery over a multicast session. It is important that the proposed scheme incorporates the properties of an evolved mobile network, as they are determined by the 3GPP specifications.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been recently proposed as a modulation technique for optical networks, due to its good spectral efficiency and impairment tolerance. Optical OFDM is much more flexible compared to traditional WDM systems, enabling elastic bandwidth transmissions. We consider the planning problem of an OFDM-based optical network where we are given a traffic matrix that includes the requested transmission rates of the connections to be served. Connections are provisioned for their requested rate by elastically allocating spectrum using a variable number of OFDM subcarriers. We introduce the Routing and Spectrum Allocation (RSA) problem, as opposed to the typical Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) problem of traditional WDM networks, and present various algorithms to solve the RSA. We start by presenting an optimal ILP RSA algorithm that minimizes the spectrum used to serve the traffic matrix, and also present a decomposition method that breaks RSA into two substituent subproblems, namely, (i) routing and (ii) spectrum allocation (R+SA) and solves them sequentially. We also propose a heuristic algorithm that serves connections one-by-one and use it to solve the planning problem by sequentially serving all traffic matrix connections. To feed the sequential algorithm, two ordering policies are proposed; a simulated annealing meta-heuristic is also used to obtain even better orderings. Our results indicate that the proposed sequential heuristic with appropriate ordering yields close to optimal solutions in low running times.

An important issue in the analysis of two-dimensional electrophoresis images is the detection and quantification of protein spots. The main challenges in the segmentation of 2DGE images are to separate overlapping protein spots correctly and to find the abundance of weak protein spots. To enable comparison of protein patterns between different samples, it is necessary to match the patterns so that homologous spots are identified. In this paper we describe a new robust technique to segment and model the different spots present in the gels. The watershed segmentation algorithm is modified to handle the problem of over segmentation by initially partitioning the image to mosaic regions using the composition of fuzzy relations. The experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to overcome the over segmentation problem associated with the available algorithms. © 2010 IEEE.

We propose efficient schemes for information-theoretically secure key exchange in the Bounded Storage Model (BSM), where the adversary is assumed to have limited storage. Our schemes generate a secret One Time Pad (OTP) shared by the sender and the receiver, from a large number of public random bits produced by the sender or by an external source. Our schemes initially generate a small number of shared secret bits, using known techniques. We introduce a new method to expand a small number of shared bits to a much longer, shared key. Our schemes are tailored to the requirements of sensor nodes and wireless networks. They are simple, efficient to implement and take advantage of the fact that practical wireless protocols transmit data in frames, unlike previous protocols, which assume access to specific bits in a stream of data. Indeed, our main contribution is twofold. On the one hand, we construct schemes that are attractive in terms of simplicity, computational complexity, number of bits read from the shared random source and expansion factor of the initial key to the final shared key. On the other hand, we show how to transform any existing scheme for key exchange in BSM into a more efficient scheme in the number of bits it reads from the shared source, given that the source is transmitted in frames.

In this paper we present a mobile application for the seamless and effective provision of networked multimedia content search and delivery services to users on the move. The VICTORY project had as an outcome a framework enabling users to search and retrieve multimedia objects over a distributed Peer to Peer - based network. Building upon the VICTORY framework, a mobile user agent was developed, which by the use of appropriate Web Services has the ability to connect to different P2P communities in order to search for and retrieve multimedia content. Long Term Evolution (LTE) is the latest step towards the 4th generation (4G) of radio technologies designed to increase the capacity and speed of mobile communications. To support Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Services (MBMS), LTE offers the possibility to transmit Multimedia Broadcast multicast service over a Single Frequency Network (MBSFN), where a time-synchronized common waveform is transmitted from multiple cells for a given duration. In this paper we analytically present the MBSFN delivery method and evaluate its performance. The critical parameters of primary interest for the evaluation of the scheme are the packet delivery cost and its scalability. To this direction, a telecommunication cost analysis of the MBMS service is presented based on the transmission cost over the air interface, as well as the costs of all interfaces and nodes of the MBSFN architecture. Since the performance of the MBSFN scheme mainly depends on the configuration of the LTE network that is under investigation, we consider different network topologies, MBSFN deployments and user distributions.

Content searching and downloading are the two dominant actions of the Internet users today, despite the fact that the Internet was not originally architected to serve such actions. Content Centric Networking is the new trend in the research community to build network architectures that route content by name and not by the host's network address so as to efficiently deal with content persistence, availability and authenticity issues. In this work we propose an extension to the Content Centric Network protocol in order to support content search as a native process of the network. By using object descriptors to represent the actual content objects and integrate these descriptors in the network protocol we manage to search and retrieve content from the network not only by name but also by the content itself. In this approach, searching for information is a process distributed to the reachable network. Moreover, content aggregation is handled by the end user and not by content aggregation portals, thematic content search engines or information curators. By doing so, search is not any more an application but part of the network and can pave the way for many novel applications which have never been thought until today. © 2010 ACM.
