H-DIBCO 2010 is the International Document Image Binarization Contest which is dedicated to handwritten document images organized in conjunction with ICFHR 2010 conference. The general objective of the contest is to identify current advances in handwritten document image binarization using meaningful evaluation performance measures. This paper reports on the contest details including the evaluation measures used as well as the performance of the 17 submitted methods along with a short description of each method. © 2010 IEEE.

Embedded applications can be structured in terms of mobile agents that are flexibly installed on available nodes. In wireless systems, such nodes typically have limited battery and memory resources; therefore it is important to place agents judiciously. In this paper we tackle the problem of placing a newcomer agent in such a system. The problem has two main components. First, enough memory space must be found or created at some node to place the agent. Second, the placement should be energy efficient. We present heuristics for tackling these two goals in a stepwise fashion, as well as a branch and bound method for achieving both goals at the same time. Our algorithms are centralized assuming a single entry point through which agents are injected into the system, with adequate knowledge of the system state and enough resources to run the proposed algorithms. The algorithms are evaluated under different simulated scenarios, and the tradeoffs across the two metrics (space, energy) are identified.

Transcriptomic technologies (DNA microarrays, Next generation sequencers) represent a major innovation in biomedical research contributing an unprecedented wealth of data regarding genome-wide inspection of an organism. GRISSOM web application is a microarray analysis environment, exploiting Grid technologies. In this work we present how the novel functionalities it incorporates through the use of various web services, gradually transform it to a generic paradigm for versatile biological computing, semantic mining and knowledge discovery. © 2010 International Federation for Medical and Biological engineering.

The Vertically-Integrated Projects (VIP) program creates and supports large-scale, long-term, vertically-integrated teams that pursue design projects embedded in the research efforts of faculty and their graduate students. The undergraduates on these teams earn academic credit for their participation in the projects and benefit from long-term mentorship by the faculty, graduate students, and more experienced undergraduates on their team. In this paper, we report on a unique opportunity for VIP teams at Purdue and Georgia Tech to collaborate on a common VIP project called eStadium. The goal of this project is research, design and deployment of applications related to the real-time delivery of multimedia content over wireless networks to fans' mobile devices in a stadium during football games. To help the teams collaborate to achieve this goal, we have deployed High-Definition Distributed Collaboration (HDDC) systems at Purdue and Georgia Tech. They support two-way, high-definition video links and shared computer applications that together significantly enhance the teams' collaboration on the project. The VIP Program benefits from a multi-methodological and longitudinal evaluation of progress toward goals and VIP outcomes. The evaluation blends rich interview-based qualitative data with a detailed social network analysis of student-level collaborative interaction and outcomes. The approach draws from studies of scientific collaboration, student learning outcomes, and social network analysis. This paper presents baseline evaluation data on early learning outcomes, student expectations, and the structure and resources of the student VIP networks. The lessons learned from this initial round of assessments will be used to improve both VIP and the collaborative system. © American Society for engineering Education, 2010.

In this paper, we address failure localization from both a practical and a theoretical perspective. After summarizing the state-of-the-art of failure localization algorithms and monitoring techniques, an overview of the most prevalent failures in optical core networks is presented. We review the role of the Optical Supervisory Channel and how it reports problems to the management plane. We analyze different equipment, investigating where most failures occur and how these failures can be monitored. We conclude that in-band OSNR monitoring is the most important monitoring technique for failure localization purposes. We give a general probabilistic model for failure localization and assess its limitations using the mutual information metric. We give a simple example for computing this mutual information and show that is it a valid metric for evaluation of the failure localization problem. For practical applications, with imperfect monitoring equipment and countless possible failures, the mutual information may be prohibitingly low. Initial analysis of the problem shows that we need intense and accurate monitoring in order to increase the mutual information for the problem and to be able to localize failures accurately.

A method for adult content classification and nudity detection is presented. Objective of this method is to classify images into different classes, varying on the degree of adult content. We utilize MPEG-7 descriptors to represent visual information. Skin regions are detected to model adult content more precisely, as well as to eliminate false-positives. Proposed method is tested with conventional image sets. Experimental results indicate that the algorithm has an acceptable detection performance. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

In this paper, we solve the pose estimation problem in real time using multiple nonoverlapping cameras and the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). Four cameras arranged in two back-to-back pairs are put on the platform of a moving robot. The two axes passing through the camera centers of each pair are perpendicular. This arrangement aims to maximize the benefits of the back-to-back setting whose accuracy is shown in literature. Each camera has its individual EKF for pose estimation which enables accurate short base-line feature tracking and parallel processing. A model for multiple nonoverlapping cameras is formulated which improves the estimate of rotation parameters with the help of a median arbiter. Accordingly, the translational parameters of pose are estimated accurately and the scale factor ambiguity related to single camera methods is solved using a low-dimensional speedy optimization.

Explicit finite element approximate inverse preconditioning methods have been extensively used for solving efficiently sparse linear systems on multiprocessor and multicomputer systems. New parallel computational techniques are proposed for the parallelization of explicit preconditioned biconjugate conjugate gradient type methods, based on Portable Operating System Interface for UniX (POSIX) Threads, for multicore systems. Parallelization is achieved by assigning every loop of the parallel explicit preconditioned bi-conjugate conjugate gradient-STAB (PEPBiCG-STAB) to the desired number of threads, thus achieving for-loop parallelization. Theoretical estimates on speedups and efficiency are also presented. Finally, numerical results for the performance of the PEPBiCG-STAB method for solving characteristic two dimensional boundary value problems on multicore computer systems are presented, which are favorably compared to corresponding results from multiprocessor systems. The implementation issues of the proposed method are also discussed using POSIX Threads on a multicore system.
