Interference is an issue of outstanding importance for efficient communication in ad-hoc wireless networks. Interference arises due to overlapping transmission power levels of nodes and causes message collisions that require energy-consuming retransmissions. In this work we study algorithms for interference control in ad-hoc wireless networks in the Euclidean space that aim at constructing low-interference network topologies with particular properties preserving network connectivity. We survey relative research work on such algorithms and provide implementations for four such algorithms comparing them on random geometric instances of the problem in the Euclidean space in average-case networks. Our experiments show that our implementations obtain in practice improved performance compared to corresponding theoretical bounds. Our findings confirm that sparse topologies do not automatically imply low interference and, furthermore, imply that a unified model for decreasing simultaneously both edge- and node-interference remains hard to define.

Temperature uniformities within a wafer and from wafer to wafer have significant impact on the smallest feature size or critical dimension of integrated circuits. These are important issues with stringent specifications. To obtain temperature uniformity, a wafer is heated by multiple independently controlled heating elements simultaneously. The accuracy of temperature sensing is hence an important issue. In this paper, sensor bias is estimated for the difficult problem where measurement outliers are close to good data such that they cannot be separated easily. Equations are derived to predict the variance of the estimates from sample size. This information enables the selection of an efficient estimator. Sensor bias estimation efficiency translates into earlier bias removal and less faulty wafers. The theory is verified experimentally in a multi-zone thermal system for semiconductor wafer processing. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, a statistical learning approach to spatial context exploitation for semantic image analysis is presented. The proposed method constitutes an extension of the key parts of the authors' previous work on spatial context utilization, where a Genetic Algorithm (GA) was introduced for exploiting fuzzy directional relations after performing an initial classification of image regions to semantic concepts using solely visual information. In the extensions reported in this work, a more elaborate approach is followed during the spatial knowledge acquisition and modeling process. Additionally, the impact of every resulting spatial constraint on the final outcome is adaptively adjusted. Experimental results as well as comparative evaluation on three datasets of varying complexity in terms of the total number of supported semantic concepts demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

In multimedia data analysis, automated indexing of conversational video is an emerging topic. One challenging problem in this topic is the recognition of higher-level concepts, such as miscommunications in conversations. While detecting miscommunications is generally easy for speakers as well as observers, it is not currently understood which cues contribute to their detection and to what extent. To make use of the knowledge on gestural cues in multimedia systems, the applicability of machine learning is investigated as a means of detecting miscommunication from gestural patterns observed in psychotherapeutic face-to-face conversations. Various features are taken from gesture data, and both simple and complex classifiers are constructed using these features. Both short-term and long-term effects are tested using different time window sizes. Also, two types of gestures, communicative and non-communicative, are considered. The experimental results suggest that there is no single gestural feature that can explain the occurrence of semantic miscommunication. Another interesting finding is that gestural cues correlate more with long-term gestural patterns than with short-term ones. © 2010 IEEE.

Embedded applications can be structured in terms of mobile agents that are flexibly installed on available nodes. In wireless systems, such nodes typically have limited battery and memory resources; therefore it is important to place agents judiciously. In this paper we tackle the problem of placing a newcomer agent in such a system. The problem has two main components. First, enough memory space must be found or created at some node to place the agent. Second, the placement should be energy efficient. We present heuristics for tackling these two goals in a stepwise fashion, as well as a branch and bound method for achieving both goals at the same time. Our algorithms are centralized assuming a single entry point through which agents are injected into the system, with adequate knowledge of the system state and enough resources to run the proposed algorithms. The algorithms are evaluated under different simulated scenarios, and the tradeoffs across the two metrics (space, energy) are identified.

The Vertically-Integrated Projects (VIP) program creates and supports large-scale, long-term, vertically-integrated teams that pursue design projects embedded in the research efforts of faculty and their graduate students. The undergraduates on these teams earn academic credit for their participation in the projects and benefit from long-term mentorship by the faculty, graduate students, and more experienced undergraduates on their team. In this paper, we report on a unique opportunity for VIP teams at Purdue and Georgia Tech to collaborate on a common VIP project called eStadium. The goal of this project is research, design and deployment of applications related to the real-time delivery of multimedia content over wireless networks to fans' mobile devices in a stadium during football games. To help the teams collaborate to achieve this goal, we have deployed High-Definition Distributed Collaboration (HDDC) systems at Purdue and Georgia Tech. They support two-way, high-definition video links and shared computer applications that together significantly enhance the teams' collaboration on the project. The VIP Program benefits from a multi-methodological and longitudinal evaluation of progress toward goals and VIP outcomes. The evaluation blends rich interview-based qualitative data with a detailed social network analysis of student-level collaborative interaction and outcomes. The approach draws from studies of scientific collaboration, student learning outcomes, and social network analysis. This paper presents baseline evaluation data on early learning outcomes, student expectations, and the structure and resources of the student VIP networks. The lessons learned from this initial round of assessments will be used to improve both VIP and the collaborative system. © American Society for engineering Education, 2010.

In this paper, we address failure localization from both a practical and a theoretical perspective. After summarizing the state-of-the-art of failure localization algorithms and monitoring techniques, an overview of the most prevalent failures in optical core networks is presented. We review the role of the Optical Supervisory Channel and how it reports problems to the management plane. We analyze different equipment, investigating where most failures occur and how these failures can be monitored. We conclude that in-band OSNR monitoring is the most important monitoring technique for failure localization purposes. We give a general probabilistic model for failure localization and assess its limitations using the mutual information metric. We give a simple example for computing this mutual information and show that is it a valid metric for evaluation of the failure localization problem. For practical applications, with imperfect monitoring equipment and countless possible failures, the mutual information may be prohibitingly low. Initial analysis of the problem shows that we need intense and accurate monitoring in order to increase the mutual information for the problem and to be able to localize failures accurately.
