Multicell Cooperative Processing (MCP) has been identified as a key technology to underpin future 4G wireless systems. In MCP enabled systems, the Base Stations (BSs) of the network form groups that jointly process user signals in order to reduce inter-cell interference and boost performance. Although MCP can lead to significant gains, it is also accompanied by overheads that are proportional to the number of BSs that are grouped together, called the cluster size. Thus it is crucial that BS clusters are of a limited size and formed in an intelligent way for achieving high performance. In this paper we present different dynamic clustering approaches for forming BS clusters of limited size. BS clustering is no longer based on geographical criteria, e.g. proximity-based static clustering, but on the channel conditions that users experience to different BSs. Dynamic clustering algorithms capture the effect of changing channel conditions and thus exploit the inherent macrodiversity of multicell wireless systems. More specifically, we propose a dynamic clustering scheme that provides significant gains while being resilient to inaccurate information on the state of wireless channels.

The objective of the discrete-time modeling tools is twofold. First, they give an insight into the basic ideas of discrete-time modeling of dc-dc converters for university students and interested power electronics specialists. Second, as it is being presented below, the interactive calculation tools facilitate the fast and simple model development in WEB browser after entering the basic circuit and load parameters. This feature can especially be useful for the practicing design engineers, since without long calculations with matrix functions the linearized discrete-time system model is immediately and automatically developed in both mathematical form (state-space equations and transfer functions in the Z domain) and also in graphical form (pole-zero map and bode plot).

researchers and practitioners in the field of knowledge management have observed the need of performing studies to understand the context and specific knowledge workers' needs before proposing strategies or systems that may not be entirely useful for organizations, resulting in costly and unsuccessful knowledge management projects. Different approaches have been proposed to face this problem, such as process engineering techniques to integrate knowledge management in business processes, and also knowledge audits to identify the knowledge and knowledge problems in organizations. This paper draws on the idea of the knowledge audit to propose a methodology for knowledge management audits, which integrates process engineering techniques and the main tasks of knowledge audits. The methodology was developed based on one of our previous works, literature review, and our own experience in field studies. The methodology, its constitutive phases and main tasks, together with some aspects about its use in field studies, including benefits and weaknesses, are described.

Achieving fast, precise, and scalable fault localization has long been a highly desired feature in all-optical mesh networks. Monitoring tree (m-tree) is an interesting method that has been introduced as the most general monitoring structure for achieving unambiguous failure localization (UFL). Ideally, with J m-trees one can monitor up to 2 J -1 links when a single failure has to be located. Such a logarithmic behavior has also been observed in numerous case studies of real life network topologies. It is expected that the m-tree framework will lead to a highly scalable link failure monitoring mechanism for not only all-optical mesh networks, but any possible future information system with mesh topologies, such as all-optical mesh networks, touch panels, quantum computing, and VLSI. It is an important task to investigate the extent such an optimal logarithmic behavior may hold, in particular in practically relevant network topologies. As an endeavor toward this goal, the paper investigates the problem by identifying essentially tight logarithmic bounds for two dimensional lattice networks. Experiments are conducted to show the feasibility and performance of the proposed constructions.

This paper proposes a new resource allocation algorithm for uplink OFDMA-based cooperative relay networks assuming multiple source nodes, multiple relay nodes and a single destination. The aim is to maximize the total sum of the sources data rates while guaranteeing fairness among them with different QoS requirements. Assuming perfect channel state information (CSI) at the resource allocation controller. The optimization problem is formulated such that each source is assigned a weight factor based on its QoS requirements, then the ones with high weights are given more priority to select their resources (relay stations and subcarriers) first. Once the required QoS is achieved for all sources, the weight factor for all sources will be unity. The remaining resources are allocated to the sources with maximum instantaneous rate. The results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the greedy and static algorithms in terms of outage probability and fairness.

We refer to channels of communication that link the user to information systems as cognitive communication channels. One especially interesting research topic related to cognitive communication channels deals with a special application called sensory substitution, when information is conveyed through a channel other than the one that is normally used for the given application. Our goal is to develop engineering systems for the remote teleoperation of robots using sensory substitution to convey feedback information in meaningful ways. Such applications could help reduce the cognitive load for the user on the one hand, and help alleviate the effect of control instabilities and hidden parameters on the other. A large part of our research deals with how to provide information on tactile percepts - otherwise inaccessible to the remote user - through sound. In this paper, we present one possible mapping between tactile percepts and auditory parameters. Through a set of controlled experiments, we show that the parameters used are meaningful and the sounds can at some level be learned by users as a substitute for tactile perception. Analyzing the error statistics of the experiments, we argue that it would be worthwhile to create a system in which the sound parameters could be locally tuned to enhance performance on a user-per-user basis. To this end, we convert the analytical descriptions of our sounds into an higher-order singular value decomposition (HOSVD) based tensor product model form. In order to be able to apply a wide range of mathematical analysis tools - such as principal component analysis and user performance-oriented adaptivity - we demonstrate that it is possible to convert our models into such canonical forms.

The main contribution of this paper is a new sliding mode design for nonlinear systems. This method is based on Tensor Product Model Transformation. It is partially extension and combination of the classical optimal manifold design for linear (or linearized) system and sector sliding mode control. This new approach enables a systematic design and decomposition of optimal sliding sector by the High Order Singular Value Decomposition (HOSVD)-based canonical description of a wide class of nonlinear systems. Two design examples and experimental results of a DSP-controlled single-degree-of-freedom motion-control system are presented.

There are several technical or technological field, which borrowed inspirations or hints from nature. This way it could be interesting to study, how a multicellular organism develops, by consecutive cell divisions, differentiations and proliferation, from a single cell. This development could be regarded as a decompression process of a highly compressed database. Following and mimicking this procedure we might be able to create a similar database or image processing transformation and compression method. The aim of our research is, finding the method how certain information is stored in the genome, which relates to the physical location and type of each cell of the body. Finding any such relationship, could help us to develop new image transformation and compression method.

A new algorithm is proposed for the software implementation of modular multiplication, which uses pre-computations with a constant module. The developed modular multiplication algorithm provides high performance in comparison with the already known algorithms, and is oriented at the variable value of the module, especially with the software implementation on micro controllers and smart cards with a small number of bits. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.
