The efficient transmission of TCP traffic over OBS networks is a challenging problem, due to the high sensitivity of TCP congestion control mechanism to losses. In this work, we propose solutions to this problem, through the burst assembly and scheduling mechanism of OBS. We investigate and propose algorithms to achieve performance enhancements for TCP traffic by taking into account TCP state information. We prove our claims with references to well-established TCP models, and validate the proposed algorithms through simulations.

Mobile learning is considered the next step of online learning by incorporating mobility as a key requirement. Indeed, the current wide spread of mobile devices and wireless technologies brings an enormous potential to e-learning, in terms of ubiquity, pervasiveness, personalization, flexibility, and so on. For this reason, Mobile Learning is attracting significant research efforts covering a fairly variety of learning settings, from schools and universities to workplaces and cities. This research has evidenced that mobile technology can offer new opportunities for learners to learn inside and beyond the traditional instructor-oriented educational paradigm. However, mobile technologies are still in its infancy and many challenges arise. In this paper we analyze, from both learning and technological perspectives, the development of learning applications using mobile devices. To this end, proxy and proxy less architectures are considered as way to extend traditional virtual campuses with mobile clients. The objective is twofold: to access learning materials and to support learning activities. A prototype of a Virtual Campus is developed using MLE-Moodle -the Mobile Learning module of Moodle. The proposed Virtual Campus enables mobile clients to perform online learning activities and is a step towards achieving the “anytime, anywhere” paradigm.

In this paper we present CUTER, a system that processes HTML pages in order to extract the useful text from them. The mechanism is focalized on HTML pages that include news articles from major portals and blogs. As useful text we define the body of the article that contains the news report. In order to extract the body of the article we deconstruct the HTML page to its DOM model and we apply a set of algorithms in order to clean and correct the HTML code, locate and characterize each node of the DOM model and finally store the text from the nodes that are characterized as useful text nodes. CUTER is a subsystem of peRSSonal, a web tool that is used to obtain news articles from all over the world, process them and present them back to the end users in a personalized manner. The role of CUTER is to feed peRSSonal with the body of the. In this paper we present the basic algorithms and experimental results on the efficiency of the CUTER text extractor.

Part of the activities of the ICT EU Network of Excellence "Building the future Optical Network in Europe" (BONE) project is the development of the European Roadmap on Optical Networking in the context of the "Network of the Future". This paper presents a summary of the views of the BONE consortium as they were developed in the framework of the Roadmap activity. The methodology followed in the development of the BONE Roadmap was firstly to identify and analyse the status of broadband access penetration as well as the availability of specific network and IT technologies in various European countries. The data collected were then processed and translated into the traffic volume (distributed across different European countries) that a Pan-European network would need to support. This information is then used as the basis of a WDM optical network dimensioning exercise performed with the aim of identifying the scale of the required optical network. In addition, based on estimations regarding the evolution of broadband access technologies and the degree of broadband penetration and network services and applications, extrapolations regarding the growth of traffic to be supported by the European Network of the Future were made in a systematic manner. These were also used to dimension and understand the requirements of the European Network of the Future. This paper presents the relevant results and also provides a discussion on the BONE consortium views on the Network of the Future from an architectural and technology perspective and an outlook of the relevant key research challenges and possible solutions.

In this work, we showcase a set of implemented multiplayer games and interactive installations based on Fun in Numbers (FinN). FinN allows the quick prototyping of applications that utilize input from multiple physical sources (sensors and other means of interfacing), by offering a set of programming templates and services, such as proximity, localization and synchronization, that hide the underlying complexity.

User authentication procedures are a computer system's first line of defense against malicious attacks that could potentially jeopardize its availability and reliability. Computational complexity considerations may prevent system designers from implementing efficient authentication procedures. This paper presents a robust two level authentication procedure is presented that is highly efficient and suitable for multi-user systems. Authentication is attained in only a single cycle of exchanges between the user and the authentication system. Further advantages arise from the fact that with the proposed technique, it is not necessary to store lists of passwords and therefore the overhead caused in systems with large numbers of registered users is minimal. The proposed architecture is shown to be reliable while creating significant economies in the amount of information that needs to be stored. These facts therefore render the architecture highly suitable for hardware implementations.

The expansion of the World Wide Web has led to a chaotic state where the users of the internet have to face and overcome the major problem of discovering information. For the solution of this problem, many mechanisms were created based on crawlers who are browsing the www and downloading pages. In this paper we describe "advaRSS" crawling mechanism which intends to be the base utility for systems offering collections of news in real time to internet user. In contrast to the common crawling mechanisms our system is focused on fetching the latest news from the major and minor portals worldwide by utilizing their RSS feeds. The news is produced in a random order any time of the day and thus the freshness of the offline collection can be measured even in minutes. This means that the system has to be updated with news every single time they occur. In order to achieve this we utilize the communication channels that exist on the modern architecture of the WWW and more specifically in the architecture of Web 2.0. As the RSS feeds are used by every major and minor portal it is possible to keep our crawler up to date and retain a high freshness of the "offline content" that is maintained in our system's database.

In multimedia data analysis, automated indexing of conversational video is an emerging topic. One challenging problem in this topic is the recognition of higher-level concepts, such as miscommunications in conversations. While detecting miscommunications is generally easy for speakers as well as observers, it is not currently understood which cues contribute to their detection and to what extent. To make use of the knowledge on gestural cues in multimedia systems, the applicability of machine learning is investigated as a means of detecting miscommunication from gestural patterns observed in psychotherapeutic face-to-face conversations. Various features are taken from gesture data, and both simple and complex classifiers are constructed using these features. Both short-term and long-term effects are tested using different time window sizes. Also, two types of gestures, communicative and non-communicative, are considered. The experimental results suggest that there is no single gestural feature that can explain the occurrence of semantic miscommunication. Another interesting finding is that gestural cues correlate more with long-term gestural patterns than with short-term ones.

Distributed Virtual Environment systems simulate the behaviour and activities of a great number of concurrent users interacting in a virtual world over a wide area network. The advances both in computer technology and networking infrastructures in combination to the advanced applications and services developed, expanded the popularity of DVEs and promoted their use in a wide range of areas, such as learning and training, collaborative work, military applications and multiplayer online games. The sizes of the virtual worlds simulated and the tremendous number of users that DVEs are called to support require additional bandwidth and computational resources. For handling these growing requirements a lot of work has been done both to the direction of alternative architectural solutions as well as to techniques and algorithms for handling and overcoming the limitations of these environments. However, recent research has shown that one of the major limitations of networked servers DVE systems is scalability. To this direction this paper presents on the one hand a dynamic approach for DVEs, which exploits the nature of these systems for the optimal resource management and extended scalability support and on the other hand, evaluates its performance through a series of experiments and under various settings of the virtual world, using Simul8 simulation tool.
