User authentication procedures are a computer system's first line of defense against malicious attacks that could potentially jeopardize its availability and reliability. Computational complexity considerations may prevent system designers from implementing efficient authentication procedures. This paper presents a robust two level authentication procedure is presented that is highly efficient and suitable for multi-user systems. Authentication is attained in only a single cycle of exchanges between the user and the authentication system. Further advantages arise from the fact that with the proposed technique, it is not necessary to store lists of passwords and therefore the overhead caused in systems with large numbers of registered users is minimal. The proposed architecture is shown to be reliable while creating significant economies in the amount of information that needs to be stored. These facts therefore render the architecture highly suitable for hardware implementations.

The expansion of the World Wide Web has led to a chaotic state where the users of the internet have to face and overcome the major problem of discovering information. For the solution of this problem, many mechanisms were created based on crawlers who are browsing the www and downloading pages. In this paper we describe "advaRSS" crawling mechanism which intends to be the base utility for systems offering collections of news in real time to internet user. In contrast to the common crawling mechanisms our system is focused on fetching the latest news from the major and minor portals worldwide by utilizing their RSS feeds. The news is produced in a random order any time of the day and thus the freshness of the offline collection can be measured even in minutes. This means that the system has to be updated with news every single time they occur. In order to achieve this we utilize the communication channels that exist on the modern architecture of the WWW and more specifically in the architecture of Web 2.0. As the RSS feeds are used by every major and minor portal it is possible to keep our crawler up to date and retain a high freshness of the "offline content" that is maintained in our system's database.

In multimedia data analysis, automated indexing of conversational video is an emerging topic. One challenging problem in this topic is the recognition of higher-level concepts, such as miscommunications in conversations. While detecting miscommunications is generally easy for speakers as well as observers, it is not currently understood which cues contribute to their detection and to what extent. To make use of the knowledge on gestural cues in multimedia systems, the applicability of machine learning is investigated as a means of detecting miscommunication from gestural patterns observed in psychotherapeutic face-to-face conversations. Various features are taken from gesture data, and both simple and complex classifiers are constructed using these features. Both short-term and long-term effects are tested using different time window sizes. Also, two types of gestures, communicative and non-communicative, are considered. The experimental results suggest that there is no single gestural feature that can explain the occurrence of semantic miscommunication. Another interesting finding is that gestural cues correlate more with long-term gestural patterns than with short-term ones.

Distributed Virtual Environment systems simulate the behaviour and activities of a great number of concurrent users interacting in a virtual world over a wide area network. The advances both in computer technology and networking infrastructures in combination to the advanced applications and services developed, expanded the popularity of DVEs and promoted their use in a wide range of areas, such as learning and training, collaborative work, military applications and multiplayer online games. The sizes of the virtual worlds simulated and the tremendous number of users that DVEs are called to support require additional bandwidth and computational resources. For handling these growing requirements a lot of work has been done both to the direction of alternative architectural solutions as well as to techniques and algorithms for handling and overcoming the limitations of these environments. However, recent research has shown that one of the major limitations of networked servers DVE systems is scalability. To this direction this paper presents on the one hand a dynamic approach for DVEs, which exploits the nature of these systems for the optimal resource management and extended scalability support and on the other hand, evaluates its performance through a series of experiments and under various settings of the virtual world, using Simul8 simulation tool.

We present the conceptual basis and the initial planning for an open source management architecture for wireless sensor networks (WSN). Although there is an abundance of open source tools serving the administrative needs of WSN deployments, there is a lack of tools or platforms for high level integrated WSN management. This is because of a variety of factors, including the lack of open source management tools, the immaturity of tools that offer manageability for WSNs, the limited high level management capabilities of sensor devices and architectures, and the lack of standardization. The current work is, to our knowledge, the first effort to conceptualize, formalize and design a remote, integrated management platform for the support of WSN research laboratories. The platform is based on the integration and extension of two innovative platforms: jWebDust, a WSN operation and management platform, and OpenRSM, an open source integrated remote systems and network management platform. The proposed system architecture can support several levels of integration (infrastructure management, functionality integration, firmware management), corresponding to different use-cases and application settings.

Feedback delays are inherent attributes of distributed control systems that usually cause unfavorable effect on the stability of the controlled process. Modelling of such systems is essential for traceable controller synthesis. In this paper we apply the TP Model Transformation to derive a polytopic representation of an LPV model where the time-delay is considered as parameter. The method is introduced via a single degree of freedom impedance model with feedback delay. The resulted model is validated by simulation.

In this paper, we propose a collaborative decision support platform that supports the product manager in defining the contents of a product release. The platform allows interactive and collaborative decision making by facilitating the exchange of information about product features among individual autonomous stakeholders, providing reputation-enhanced collaboration, ensuring a positive collaboration atmosphere by avoiding public stakeholder ratings and reconciling individual goals with group decisions.

This paper proposes a power control mechanism for the efficient radio bearer selection in the Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) framework of Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). The selection of the most efficient transport channel in terms of power consumption is a key point for MBMS enabled UMTS networks, since a wrong transport channel selection for the transmission of the MBMS data could result to a significant decrease in the total capacity of the network. Different UMTS transport channels and power saving techniques are examined and an algorithm that selects the most efficient combination of the above parameters is proposed. The proposed MBMS power control mechanism selects the transport channel that minimizes the base station's transmission power in every cell of the network that serves multicast users. © 2009.

The sizes of the virtual worlds and the tremendous number of users that DVEs are called to support require additional bandwidth and computational resources. For handling these growing requirements a lot of work has been done both to the direction of alternative architectural solutions as well as to techniques and algorithms for handling the limitations of these environments. For supporting large-scale DVEs, extended infrastructure is needed in terms of both hardware and software. However, both researchers and application designers do not always have access to such extended infrastructure and the assessment and evaluation of developed techniques becomes extremely difficult. To this direction, this paper presents a simulation modelling tool for networked servers DVEs that could be used by designers for simulating the performance of their approaches under different scenarios.

This Letter reports on a search for narrow high-mass resonances decaying into dilepton final states. The data were recorded by the ATLAS experiment in pp collisions at s=7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 1.08 (1.21) fb−1 in the e+e− (μ+μ−) channel. No statistically significant excess above the standard model expectation is observed and upper limits are set at the 95% C.L. on the cross section times branching fraction of Z′ resonances and Randall-Sundrum gravitons decaying into dileptons as a function of the resonance mass. A lower mass limit of 1.83 TeV on the sequential standard model Z′ boson is set. A Randall-Sundrum graviton with coupling k/M¯Pl=0.1 is excluded at 95% C.L. for masses below 1.63 TeV.
