Statistical learning approaches, bounded mainly to knowledge related to perceptual manifestations of semantics, fall short to adequately utilise the meaning and logical connotations pertaining to the extracted image semantics. Instigated by the Semantic Web, ontologies have appealed to a significant share of synergistic approaches towards the combined use of statistical learning and explicit semantics. While the relevant literature tends to disregard the uncertainty involved, and treats the extracted image descriptions as coherent, two valued propositions, this paper explores reasoning under uncertainty towards a more accurate and pragmatic handling of the underlying semantics. Using fuzzy DLs, the proposed reasoning framework captures the vagueness of the extracted image descriptions and accomplishes their semantic interpretation, while resolving inconsistencies rising from contradictory descriptions. To evaluate the proposed reasoning framework, an experimental implementation using the fuzzyDL Description Logic reasoner has been carried out. Experiments in the domain of outdoor images illustrate the added value, while outlining challenges to be further addressed. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.

The technological as well as software advances in microelectronics and embedded component design have led to the development of low cost, small-sized devices capable of forming wireless, ad-hoc networks and sensing a number of qualities of their environment, while performing computations that depend on the sensed qualities as well as information received by their peers. These sensor networks rely on the collective power of the separate devices as well as their computational and sensing capabilities to understand "global" environmental states through locally sampled information and local sensor interactions. Due to the locality of the sensor networks, that naturally arises due to the locality of their communications capabilities, a number of interesting connections exist between these networks and geometrical concepts and problems. In this paper we study two simple problems that pertain to the formation of low power and low interference communication patterns in fixed topology sensor networks. We study the problem of using multihop communication links instead of direct ones as well as the problem of forming a communication ring of sensor networks so as to reduce power consumption as well as interference from other nodes. Our focus is on the connection between sensor networks and geometrical concepts, rather than on practicality, so as to highlight their interrelationship.

We present the conceptual basis and the initial planning for an open source management architecture for wireless sensor networks (WSN). Although there is an abundance of open source tools serving the administrative needs of WSN deployments, there is a lack of tools or platforms for high level integrated WSN management. This is because of a variety of factors, including the lack of open source management tools, the immaturity of tools that offer manageability for WSNs, the limited high level management capabilities of sensor devices and architectures, and the lack of standardization. The current work is, to our knowledge, the first effort to conceptualize, formalize and design a remote, integrated management platform for the support of WSN research laboratories. The platform is based on the integration and extension of two innovative platforms: jWebDust, a WSN operation and management platform, and OpenRSM, an open source integrated remote systems and network management platform. The proposed system architecture can support several levels of integration (infrastructure management, functionality integration, firmware management), corresponding to different use-cases and application settings.

Multi-rate multicast schemes can be broadly classified into two categories. In layered multicast, a video file is transmitted by a base layer, which contains the most important features of the video. Additional layers, called enhancement layers, contain data that refine the quality of the base layer. In simulcast, the video file is transmitted by replicated layers that contain the same content at different quality. The benefits of layered multicast versus simulcast are still under question, as layered multicast presents higher complexity and more challenging deployment than simulcast. In this paper, two multi-rate multicast control schemes are compared. The layered multicast SMCC congestion control against our proposed solution for simulcast transmission, named ASSP. We compare the two schemes under a controlled simulation environment with the network simulator software (ns-2) by taking into account the evaluation criteria in RFC 5166. The results demonstrate that both SMCC and ASSP are TCP-friendly while SMCC seems to suffers from small oscillations of the transmission rate. In network topologies with low complexity ASSP consumes no more bandwidth than SMCC for the transmission of the different simulcast streams, while being a simpler solution than the more complicated SMCC.

In this paper we study load balancing in a cluster based p2p system. The cluster based architecture is chosen after the study of various real systems. We then define the notion of load for that system and describe coefficients that measure the different parameters of load. We use these coefficients to define load factors that can be used to measure each node's load. These factors are also used in two algorithms that balance the load fairly among all peers in a cluster. We improve the algorithms' balancing performance using replication of popular objects. A set of metrics is used to evaluate the cost of each algorithm and the effect on system's performance. Our simulation results show that it is possible to improve the fairness on load distribution without replication but with a small reduce on system's throughput. And under the cost of replicating a small amount of objects we improve fairness without reducing system's throughput.

In this paper we present CUTER, a system that processes HTML pages in order to extract the useful text from them. The mechanism is focalized on HTML pages that include news articles from major portals and blogs. As useful text we define the body of the article that contains the news report. In order to extract the body of the article we deconstruct the HTML page to its DOM model and we apply a set of algorithms in order to clean and correct the HTML code, locate and characterize each node of the DOM model and finally store the text from the nodes that are characterized as useful text nodes. CUTER is a subsystem of peRSSonal, a Web tool that is used to obtain news articles from all over the world, process them and present them back to the end users in a personalized manner. The role of CUTER is to feed peRSSonal with the body of the. In this paper we present the basic algorithms and experimental results on the efficiency of the CUTER text extractor.

In the last few years, the number of projects involving historical reconstruction has increased significantly. Recent technologies have proven a powerful tool for a better understanding of our cultural heritage through which to attain a glimpse of the environments in which our ancestors lived. However, to accomplish such a purpose, these reconstructions should be presented to us as they may really have been perceived by a local inhabitant, according to the illumination and materials used back then and, equally important, the characteristics of the human visual system. The human visual system has a remarkable ability to adjust itself to almost all everyday scenarios. This is particularly evident in extreme lighting conditions, such as bright light or dark environments. However, a major portion of the visible spectra captured by our visual system cannot be represented in most display devices. High dynamic range imagery is a field of research which is developing techniques to correct such inaccuracies. This new viewing paradigm is perfectly suited for archaeological interpretation, since its high contrast and chromaticity can present us with an enhanced viewing experience, closer to what an inhabitant of that era may have seen. In this article we present a case study of the reconstruction of a Roman site. We generate high dynamic range images of mosaics and frescoes from one of the most impressive monuments in the ruins of Conimbriga, Portugal, an ancient city of the Roman Empire. To achieve the requisite level of precision, in addition to having a precise geometric 3D model, it is crucial to integrate in the virtual simulation authentic physical data of the light used in the period under consideration. Therefore, in order to create a realistic physical-based environment, we use in our lighting simulations real data obtained from simulated Roman luminaries of that time. © 2009 ACM.

A search for diphoton events with large missing transverse energy is presented. The data were collected with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at s=7 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.1 pb−1. No excess of such events is observed above the standard model background prediction. In the context of a specific model with one universal extra dimension with compactification radius R and gravity-induced decays, values of 1/R<729 GeV are excluded at 95% C. L., providing the most sensitive limit on this model to date.

We present in this paper a simulation-based comparison of one of the best known multicast congestion control schemes - TFMCC - against our proposed adaptive smooth multicast protocol (ASMP). ASMP consists of a single-rate multicast congestion control, which takes advantage of the RTCP sender (SR) and receiver reports (RR) in order to adjust the sender's transmission rate in respect of the network conditions. The innovation in ASMP lays in the "smooth" transmission rate, which is TCP-friendly and prevent oscillations. We use an integrated simulation environment named Multi-Evalvid-RA for the evaluation of the two congestion control schemes. Multi-Evalvid-RA provides all the necessary tools to perform simulation studies and assess the video quality by using both network related metrics along with video quality measurements. The performance evaluation results show that ASMP is a very efficient solution for rate adaptive multimedia applications and a serious competitor to well know TFMCC.

We design and implement a multicost impairment- aware routing and wavelength assignment algorithm for online traffic. In transparent optical networks the quality of a transmission degrades due to physical layer impairments. To serve a connection, the proposed algorithm finds a path and a free wavelength (a lightpath) that has acceptable signal quality performance by estimating a quality of transmission measure, called the Q factor. We take into account channel utilization in the network, which changes as new connections are established or released, in order to calculate the noise variances that correspond to physical impairments on the links. These, along with the time invariant eye impairment penalties of all candidate network paths, form the inputs to the algorithm. The multicost algorithm finds a set of so called non-dominated Q paths from the given source to the given destination. Various objective functions are then evaluated in order to choose the optimal lightpath to serve the connection. The proposed algorithm combines the strength of multicost optimization with low execution time, making it appropriate for serving online connections.
