Active modeling is required in learning settings to cope with the dynamic evolution of the knowledge, since learners competences evolves over time as they participate in the course activities. Moreover, one of the main issues in a competence based eLearning process is to deliver personalized instructional designs adjusted to both 1) intrinsic characteristics of users (i.e. learning styles) and 2) the desired and achieved competences in the learning process (i.e. specific and generic competences). This delivery includes the adaptation of the content and the activities in a learning scenario based on a dynamic user model that evolves according to user interactions. In this paper, an approach to support Conditional Plans Generation (IMS Learning Designs) in the context of a virtual learning environment is presented The process is supported by a pervasive usage of standards and specifications (IMS family of specifications) in conjunction with an integral user modeling.

Localization is a fundamental task in mobile robotics and in indoor environments we can use various sensors to solve this problem. In the Intelligent Space environment we can use laser range finders or ultrasonic positioning systems to localize and track mobile robots. Nevertheless, our final goal is to substitute these sensors and accomplish this task using just cameras. In this paper, we show the feasibility of determining the robot's location based on the images received from a single camera. In our experimental room we used a surveillance camera, which can be controlled to pan/tilt in order to change the point of view. The camera had been mounted on the ceiling and six preset positions were selected to cover the whole area. The object recognition is based on colour space filtering and contour detection. Finally, the contours of the detected objects are transformed from the image space to the world coordinate system and the polygons are reduced to simpler ones. The system is able to detect not only the position of the objects, but their orientations.

Music provides a tool to study numerous aspects of neuroscience from motion-skill to emotion since listening to and producing music involves many brain functions. The musician's brain is also regarded as an ideal model to investigate plasticity of the human brain. In this paper, an EEG-based neural network is proposed to assess neuroplasticity induced by musical training. A musical chord perception experiment is designed to acquire and compare the behavioral and neural responses of musicians and non-musicians. The ERPs elicited by the consonant and dissonant chords are combined together as the features of the model. The principle component analysis (PCA) is used to reduce feature dimensions and the dimension-reduced features are input to a feedforward neural network to recognize the brain potentials belong to a musician or a non-musician. The accuracy can reach 97% in average for leave-one-out cross validation of six subjects in this experiment. It demonstrates the feasibility of assessing effects of musical training by ERP signals elicited by musical chord perception. © 2009 IEEE.

In optical burst switching (OBS) networks one of the most challenging problems is to provide service differentiation. The lack of buffering in the intermediate nodes, makes QoS provisioning in OBS networks a difficult problem to address. In this work, we propose a scheduling algorithm that supports QoS based on preemptions, which are controlled by a novel preemption policy. Our claims are validated by analytical modelling and experimental analysis through simulations using data belonging to two different classes of service - best effort and video streaming data. Performance evaluation is based on throughput measurements for best effort class, and perceived quality metrics like PSNR and MOS scores for the video streaming class.

We present a change detection method for terrain covers from multi-temporal SAR images based on a spatial chaotic model which is known to adequately characterize the coherent process of SAR imaging. The major problem of SAR change detection rises from both the presence of speckle noise and the pixel mis-registration that are commonly seen in the remote sensing image. By means of chaotic model, we first transform the images to fractal domain and then perform the CFAR detection. Simulated tests are conducted to quantitatively evaluate the impacts of these two major error sources on detection rate. Results from satellite SAR for landcover change detection clearly show that the proposed algorithm not only the speckle noise can be effectively suppressed without scarifying the spatial resolution;the excruciating mis-registration error was taken into account and removed. © 2009 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Device-parameter estimation through path-delay measurement, which facilitates fast on-die performance prediction and diagnosis, is proposed. With the proposed technique, delays of a set of paths consisting of different logic cells are monitored. Based on the pre-characterized parameter to delay sensitivity, the process variation of a chip is estimated as an inverse problem. Discussion of desirable logic cell combination to form paths that maximize estimation accuracy is presented. Measurement of ring oscillator arrays composed of standard and customized logic cells resulted in consistent estimation of threshold voltages. Measurement accuracy is greatly enhanced by the proposed good logic cell combinations.

Applying high level parallel runtimes to data/compute intensive applications is becoming increasingly common. The simplicity of the MapReduce programming model and the availability of open source MapReduce runtimes such as Hadoop, are attracting more users to the MapReduce programming model. Recently, Microsoft has released DryadLINQ for academic use, allowing users to experience a new programming model and a runtime that is capable of performing large scale data/compute intensive analyses. In this paper, we present our experience in applying DryadLINQ for a series of scientific data analysis applications, identify their mapping to the DryadLINQ programming model, and compare their performances with Hadoop implementations of the same applications. © 2009 IEEE.

The continuing miniaturization of LSI dimension is causing the increase of process-related variations which significantly affects not only its design turn around time but also its manufacturing yield. Statistical static timing analysis (SSTA) is expected as a promising way to estimate the performance of circuits more accurately considering delay variations. However, LSIs designed using SSTA may have higher probability of parametric faults than the ones designed with deterministic timing analysis. In order to test these parametric faults, effective extraction techniques of critical paths are needed. In this paper, we discuss a general trend between the delay margin of LSIs designed by SSTA and their parametric fault ratio. Then we propose an adaptive test flow for parametric faults using statistical static timing information, and a concept of parametric fault coverage. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

The current work addresses the unifi cation of Electronic Health Records related to cervical cancer into a single medical knowledge source, in the context of the EU-funded ASSIST research project. The project aims to facilitate the research for cervical precancer and cancer through a system that virtually unifi es multiple patient record repositories, physically located in different medical centers/hospitals, thus, increasing fl exibility by allowing the formation of study groups "on demand" and by recycling patient records in new studies. To this end, ASSIST uses semantic technologies to translate all medical entities (such as patient examination results, history, habits, genetic profi le) and represent them in a common form, encoded in the ASSIST Cervical Cancer Ontology. The current paper presents the knowledge elicitation approach followed, towards the defi nition and representation of the disease's medical concepts and rules that constitute the basis for the ASSIST Cervical Cancer Ontology. The proposed approach constitutes a paradigm for semantic integration of heterogeneous clinical data that may be applicable to other biomedical application domains.
