Graph classification is an increasingly important step in numerous application domains, such as function prediction of molecules and proteins, computerised scene analysis, and anomaly detection in program flows. Among the various approaches proposed in the literature, graph classification based on frequent subgraphs is a popular branch: Graphs are represented as (usually binary) vectors, with components indicating whether a graph contains a particular subgraph that is frequent across the dataset. On large graphs, however, one faces the enormous problem that the number of these frequent subgraphs may grow exponentially with the size of the graphs, but only few of them possess enough discriminative power to make them useful for graph classification. Efficient and discriminative feature selection among frequent subgraphs is hence a key challenge for graph mining. In this article, we propose an approach to feature selection on frequent subgraphs, called CORK, that combines two central advantages. First, it optimizes a submodular quality criterion, which means that we can yield a near-optimal solution using greedy feature selection. Second, our submodular quality function criterion can be integrated into gSpan, the state-of-the-art tool for frequent subgraph mining, and help to prune the search space for discriminative frequent subgraphs even during frequent subgraph mining.

Music provides a tool to study numerous aspects of neuroscience from motion-skill to emotion since listening to and producing music involves many brain functions. The musician's brain is also regarded as an ideal model to investigate plasticity of the human brain. In this paper, an EEG-based neural network is proposed to assess neuroplasticity induced by musical training. A musical chord perception experiment is designed to acquire and compare the behavioral and neural responses of musicians and non-musicians. The ERPs elicited by the consonant and dissonant chords are combined together as the features of the model. The principle component analysis (PCA) is used to reduce feature dimensions and the dimension-reduced features are input to a feedforward neural network to recognize the brain potentials belong to a musician or a non-musician. The accuracy can reach 97% in average for leave-one-out cross validation of six subjects in this experiment. It demonstrates the feasibility of assessing effects of musical training by ERP signals elicited by musical chord perception.

Sensor networks are a sensing, computing and communication infrastructure that are able to observe and respond to phenomena in the natural environment and in our physical and cyber infrastructure. The sensors themselves can range from small passive microsensors to larger scale, controllable weather-sensing platforms. Presently, there are many research work for sensor networks. In our previous work, we implemented a simulation system for sensor networks and simulated the proposed system with reactive and preactive protocols. In this work, we want to investigate how the sensor network performs in case of using OLSR protocol and compare the simulation results with AODV protocol. The simulation results have shown that the consumed energy for OLSR protocol is better than AODV protocol. Also, the goodput for the case of using OLSR does not change too much compared with the case using AODV, but the goodput is not good when the number of nodes is increased.

The main contribution of this paper to develop a mathematical model which describes the movement of a piston of pneumatic cylinder controlled by a proportional valve, keeping the non linear behavior of pneumatic system. The linear parameter varying (LPV) representations and linear matrix inequality (LMI) based analysis and system control design are in the focus of modern control theories.

Today, in production engineering we have already taken into usage complex virtual representations of the manufacturing environment were we can program, simulate, analyse and optimise key performances. Such systems are mainly working through keyboard/ mouse input while user feedback normally are direct visual through computer screen and text files. Such communication only relays on a limited spectre of our senses and the keyboard/mouse/screen systems cannot be said to be very human friendly, especially when the operator is expected to operate ldquoout of officerdquo in a unstructured, maybe dangerous or dirty, environment. In the near future we expect to see more advanced input/output devices like motion capturing and speech input systems while feedback will not be visual alone but include several other human senses. Combinatorial sensory information, interpreted by the human brain, becomes very handy when a stand alone sense is not enough to interpret the actual situation. Imitation of senses and feedback from virtual reality environments always meant a great problem. Realization of two (sight and hearing) out of the five human senses is indispensable. Simulation of these two senses is not complex issue; on the contrary the other three are quite challenging. This paper describes the development of a vibro-tactile glove which can provide sensory feedback from a virtual environment, either as a stand alone system but most important in combination with sight and audio feedback systems. Instead of implementing real force feedback, the focus is on tactile sensing, as an alternative way of achieving the same feedback. The glove contains six vibration motors on different locations on the hand. These locations include all five fingers, and the palm. Communication with the glove is wireless, enabling free movement for the user. The system is low cost and very small sized which allows for combining it with advanced input devices like a motion capturing suit.

Man as a social being, as a being in social relations, is in constant motion. Such mobility affects the social networks that Man builds throughout one's existence. Networks that can consist of dozens, hundreds or even thousands of other people, with various degrees of mobility. During the formation of such networks, problems can arise, such as elements that concentrate many relationships, very isolated individuals or peripheral members of a network, people who are the only link between two distinct groups, agglomerations of people in isolated points. This can cause a series of losses to the most important element that flows through social networks: knowledge. In scientific social networks, this assertion takes even more importance, mainly on account of the mobility of researchers and the excess of knowledge circulating in it, making it more vulnerable to the movements of Man. It is with the intent of solving this problem that our work seeks to achieve success, as it analyzes the scientific social networks based on the GCC tool detects the problems related to them, and suggests recommendations of relationships to users considered harmful to the flow of knowledge in the network. We call this process of social network balancing. For the evaluation of this work we conducted a comparison with several similar proposals, and developed a working prototype, which in turn was used to make our case studies.

This research intended to study the effects of utilizing games in health e-learning network on teaching third graders in elementary schools about nutrition. The studied groups of this research were 2 classes of 33 third graders; the two classes were separated into experimental and control group. The experiment was implemented in a four-week duration. The experimental group learned the knowledge of nutrition based on game playing on a national health e-learning network, whereas the control group was lectured with multi-media slide shows. During the learning process, the two groups underwent the steps of pretest, learning and posttest. The result revealed that students received better scores on nutrition knowledge test and dietary behavior assessments in the experimental group, which are evidence of the beneficial impact of health e-learning network's games on nutrition education and dietary behavior among elementary school students. This however, did not show much difference between the two groups in the assessment of nutrition attitude. Within the experimental group, the results did not differ much between the girls and boys in all three assessments.

This report summarizes the proceedings of the second workshop of the 'Minimum Information for Biological and Biomedical Investigations' (MIBBI) consortium held on Dec 1-2, 2010 in Rüdesheim, Germany through the sponsorship of the Beilstein-institute. MIBBI is an umbrella organization uniting communities developing Minimum Information (MI) checklists to standardize the description of data sets, the workflows by which they were generated and the scientific context for the work. This workshop brought together representatives of more than twenty communities to present the status of their MI checklists and plans for future development. Shared challenges and solutions were identified and the role of MIBBI in MI checklist development was discussed. The meeting featured some thirty presentations, wide-ranging discussions and breakout groups. The top outcomes of the two-day workshop as defined by the participants were: 1) the chance to share best practices and to identify areas of synergy; 2) defining a series of tasks for updating the MIBBI Portal; 3) reemphasizing the need to maintain independent MI checklists for various communities while leveraging common terms and workflow elements contained in multiple checklists; and 4) revision of the concept of the MIBBI Foundry to focus on the creation of a core set of MIBBI modules intended for reuse by individual MI checklist projects while maintaining the integrity of each MI project. DNA Microarrays have dramatically reshaped modern biological research by deriving profiles of genome-wide expression of living organisms, and producing an unprecedented wealth of quantitative data. Given this characteristic, microarray experiments are considered high-throughput both in terms of data (data intensive) and processing (computationally intensive). GRISSOM enables exploitation of GRID resources for DNA microarray distributed processing. It provides experts with a complete web-based solution for managing, searching and disseminating biological knowledge in the context of gene expression patterns on a genomic scale. The platform is developed and deployed using open source software components. Through the use of web service technologies (WSDL language) GRISSOM can be encapsulated in other biomedical processing workflows, thus rendering access to its algorithms, transparent and generic.
