In this paper, we use the OMNET++ simulator in order to evaluate the performance of the basic mobile IPv6 protocol and some of its proposed variations. The most important metric we are interested in is the handover latency, which is measured for various combinations of the proposed mobile IPv6 variations and then this metric is used, combined with factors such as the complexity of the implementation, in order to evaluate and identify the best possible configuration for the operation of the protocol.

This paper presents some of the results obtained by the application of Ethernet layer 2 quality of service in IP networks. IP networks traditionally provide quality of service in Layer 3. However, since there is an enormous existing Layer 2 infrastructure, todaypsilas networks could benefit from the deployment of Layer 2 quality of service and the cooperation between layer 2 quality of service and layer 3 quality of service. In this paper, experiments are suggested and conducted and a scheme is suggested for efficient cooperation between Layer 2 and Layer 3 QoS provisioning.

Multicast transmission is one of the major goals for Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) that motivated the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to launch the Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) framework. MBMS is a key framework that constitutes a significant step towards the so-called Mobile Broadband by efficiently utilizing network and radio resources, both in the core network and more importantly, in the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN). One of most important problems that MBMS is currently facing is the assignment of the appropriate transport channel for the transmission of MBMS data. This paper proposes an alternative solution to the problem of efficient transport channel selection. In particular, we introduce a cost-based scheme for the efficient radio bearer selection that minimizes the delivery cost of the multicast data. In our approach, the telecommunication cost over the most crucial interfaces of UMTS is calculated and based on this cost, the appropriate radio bearer is selected. © 2008, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing. Our goal was to create a 3D virtual environment which could be used to carry out online lectures and which would offer the most popular features of current CVEs. This paper initially discusses the potential of 3D networked virtual environments for supporting collaborative learning and presents the assets of such systems. Furthermore, the paper reviews the features of five such software applications, through the comparison of the tools and services they offer. These include tools for supporting communication, sharing applications, organizing and coordinating the teaching process and for interacting with the virtual environment through an avatar. Based on that comparison, we justify our choice of platform and discuss design and implementation issues. Finally, future work regarding the assessment of the virtual environment is discussed.

In this research, the performance evaluation of two class priority Delta Multistage Interconnection Networks (MINs) is analyzed, using a discrete priority queuing model. All Delta Networks are constructed by special switching elements (SEs) based on an architecture which natively supports two classes of routing traffic. The proposed analytical method which was developed for performance metrics investigation can be applied on any class of Banyan Switches, because the model is independent from their internal link permutations, providing results for all intermediate stages. The analytical method was validated by simulation experiments and the obtained results in the marginal cases of single priority MINs were found to be more accurate as compared with those of three older classic *** proposed architecture of Delta Networks which have been thoroughly analyzed by our analytical model can be useful in the study and development of communication links that support both voice and data traffic co instantaneously, with good quality of service.

Mobile agents (MAs) have been initially developed to replace the client/server model which shows many disadvantages in WSN environments (e.g. very high bandwidth and energy utilization). Herein, we present CBID (Clone-Based Itinerary Design), a novel algorithm that calculates near-optimal routes for MAs that incrementally fuse the data as they visit the nodes while enabling a fast update of designed itineraries which is especially important for highly dynamic topologies. The order of visited nodes highly affects the quality and the overall cost of data fusion. The key MAs characteristic exploited by CBID to reduce energy consumption and response time is their cloning capability. Parallel dispatched MAs sequentially visit sensor nodes arranged in tree structures and upon visiting a node with two or more child nodes, the MAs (master MAs) clone of themselves with each clone (slave MA) visiting a tree branch. When all slave MAs return to that node, report their data to the master MA and are self-destroyed. This results in highly reduced energy consumption and response time since many MAs work in parallel. Simulation results prove the high effectiveness of CBID in data fusion tasks compared to other alternative algorithms.

The need for efficient implementation of simple crossbar schedulers has increased in the recent years due to the advent of on-chip interconnection networks that require low latency message delivery. The core function of any crossbar scheduler is arbitration that resolves conflicting requests for the same output. Since, the delay of the arbiters directly determine the operation speed of the scheduler, the design of faster arbiters is of paramount importance. In this paper, we present a new bit-level algorithm and new circuit techniques for the design of programmable priority arbiters that offer significantly more efficient implementations compared to already-known solutions. From the experimental results it is derived that the proposed circuits are more than 15% faster than the most efficient previous implementations, which under equal delay comparisons, translates to 40% less energy.

A novel gait authentication scheme based on distributed source coding principles is proposed. Biometric recognition is formulated as a coding problem with noisy side information at the decoder and error correcting codes are employed for user authentication. The effective exploitation of the noise channel statistics in the decoding process improves performance. It is also shown that the proposed method increases the security of the stored biometric templates. Gait recognition is based on the extraction of depth data from human silhouettes and a set of discriminative features. The experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

Following the rapid development of gene selection methods, several comparison studies have been reported for ranking methods on various datasets. In order to reduce bias in performance measures, most studies use an evaluation scheme based on cross-validation. In this paper we focus on the methodology of evaluation itself and address methodological problems using three representative algorithms on two public datasets. More specifically, the paper discusses the need of an independent test-set to reduce bias associated with cross-validation, the use of case specific considerations for generalization, as well as other measures that reflect stability and consistency of the result. Such measures reflect the influence of the actual dataset distribution on the performance of gene selection methods.

In this paper, we present a novel approach for 3D facial expression recognition which is inspired by the advances of ant colony and particle swarm optimization (ACO and PSO respectively) in the field of data mining. Anatomical correspondence between faces is first established using a generic 3D face model which is deformed elastically to match the facial surfaces. Surface points are then used as a basis for classification according to a set of classification rules, which are discovered by an ACO/PSO-based rule discovery algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated on the BU-3DFEDB facial expression database where a total recognition rate of 92.3% was achieved.
