researchers need to explore and study the plethora of challenges that emergent intelligent hypermedia technologies bring to the Adaptive Web. This special session aims to increase the awareness of researchers in this area, providing an in-depth investigation on several research and deployment issues, regarding the impact of intelligent methods on this new form of Web. In addition, this special session examines the performance characteristics of various approaches in Web-based systems, while it focuses on the development of intelligent methods among different hypermedia applications.

Traditional Chinese pulse diagnosis (TCPD) is one of the most important diagnostic techniques in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and computerized analysis of pulse signals is a crucial step in objectifying and standardizing TCPD. In this work, we use Doppler ultrasonic device to collect wrist-pulse signals from patients with gastritis and cholecystitis as well as healthy persons. After extracting the envelopes of ultrasonic pulse contour, wavelet (packet) transforms are applied to decompose the pulse signals and extract the wavelet features. Together with some Doppler ultrasonic diagnostic parameters, such as STI, RI, etc., a two-category classifier is employed to distinguish the unhealthy persons from healthy ones, and tell the patients from different diseases. 12 gastritis sufferers (Group G), 15 cholecystitis sufferers (Group C) and 19 healthy persons (Group H) were involved in the experiment. An accuracy of 80. 77% and an accuracy of 86.21% are achieved in discriminating Group G and Group C from Group H, respectively, and the classification accuracy between Group G and Group C can reach 100%.

Quantum computing algorithms are considered for several problems in graph theory. Classical algorithms involve searching over some space for finding the minimal spanning tree problem in a graph. We modify classical Primpsilas algorithm and replace quantum search instead of classical search, of which it will lead to more efficient algorithm. Also we proposed the structure for non-classical algorithms and design the various phases of the probabilistic quantum-classical algorithm for classical and quantum parts. Finally, we represent the result of implementing and simulating Primpsilas algorithm in the probabilistic quantum-classical algorithm.

Historically, the ACM Multimedia Conference is split into a "technical" program and an "arts" program. These programs sometimes seem completely separate from one another, victims of a "semantic gap" between disciplines. The goal of this panel is to create a space in which scientists learn from artists, and arts from science. We need to discover new connections between modalities of research. In order to create the most exciting and powerful future forms of interactive multimedia systems, the ones that will create the most beneficial broader impact on humanity, we need to foster new collaborations between artists and scientists. This panel seeks to bridge the great divide of language and communities that has fragmented us, creating a new space for developing connections between the arts and sciences of multimedia research, as embodied through the artists and scientists of ACM Multimedia. The goal is to make this conference a premier site for catalyzing emergent connections. Among the ancient Greeks, the techne, which included the sciences, were based in the arts. Our modes of knowledge production have since separated and grown alienated. "What weird stuff are those people doing?" To bridge the divide, we must understand and acknowledge differences, and use this as a basis for discovering common ground. In the sciences, knowledge is constructed empirically, through hypotheses and validations. Aesthetics and concepts play essential roles in how works of art are formulated to stimulate experiences. Where do these aims intersect and how might they inform each other? In this conference, one track develops pattern recognition methods for content analysis and retrieval. Another develops network and system techniques. Applications invoke these methods in usable systems. Human-centered multimedia serves as a bridge connecting human experiences with algorithmic methods. The interactive art program develops new concepts of how multimedia can function culturally, amidst society,

Most of the reported distributed video coding (DVC) architectures have a serious limitation that hinders its practical application. The uses of a feedback channel between the encoder and the decoder require an interactive decoding procedure which is a limitation for applications such as offline processing. On the other hand, the decoder needs an efficient way to estimate the probability of error without assuming the availability of the original video at the decoder. In this paper we continue with our previous works into a more practical DVC architecture which solves both problems based on the use of machine learning. The proposed approach is based on extracting the relationships that exist between the residual frame and the number of requests over this feedback channel. We apply these concepts to pixel-domain Wyner-Ziv coding demonstrating significant savings in bitrates with a little loss of quality.

Globalization is making both developed and developing countries think about effective and efficient strategies that will advance their economies and social development. Throughout the history of civilization, engineering has played a critical role in economic development. Engineers are key not only in solving local problems but also in knowledge creation and knowledge transfer. Thus, it is imperative that technical know-how be supplemented with professional skills to develop an 'adaptive leader' who is capable of addressing the multiple challenges of an ever changing world. The key-question posed by the 21st century global economy to engineering educators and stake-holders is this: "How can education in science and technology help to reduce poverty, boost socio-economic development, and take the right decisions for sustainable and environmental compatible development?" To answer these questions, a global approach is needed: and this can only be accomplished by a "team" which has its roots in all regions of the world, i.e. which is enabled to think globally and then act locally. There's a need to establish effective engineering education processes of high quality around the world to assure a global supply of well-prepared engineering graduates. This paper describes the reasons for the creation in October 2006 of IFEES - the International Federation of engineering Education Societies. It will describe the vision, mission, and key strategies of IFEES. It will also describe some of the initiatives currently underway and how the various engineering education stakeholders can leverage and benefit from engaging with IFEES, thus strengthening the organizational capacity of engineering education societies throughout the world. Due to the opportunities provided by the Internet, people are taking advantage of e-learning courses and during the last few years enormous research efforts have been dedicated to the development of e-learning systems. So far, many e-learning systems are proposed and used practically. However, in these systems the e-learning completion rate is low. One of the reasons is the low study desire and motivation. In our previous work, we implemented a e-learning system that is able to increase the learning efficiency by stimulating learners motivation. In this work, we designed and implemented new functions to improve the system performance.

As mobile devices are becoming increasingly powerful and ubiquitous, new possibilities to get route guidance are created, allowing users to save valuable time and effort. However, mobile devices still face severe constraints that limit the possibilities that a mobile route finding application may offer. In this paper, we present a device independent mobile application that enables mobile users to receive route directions to their handheld device. This application is an extension to an existing mobile map delivery system, the m-CHARTIS system. We focus on the main features and we analyse the device independent character of the application. Implementation details are presented and finally directions for future work are proposed.

We propose and evaluate a new burst assembly algorithm based on the average delay of the packets comprising a burst. This method fixes the average delay of the packets belonging to an assembled burst to a desired value TAVE that may be different for each forwarding equivalence class (FEC). We show that the proposed method significantly improves the delay jitter experienced by the packets during the burst assembly process, when compared to that of timer-based and burst length-based assembly policies. Minimizing packet delay jitter is important in a number of applications, such as real-audio and streaming-video applications. We also find that the improvement in the packet delay jitter yields a corresponding significant improvement in the performance of TCP, whose operation depends critically on the ability to obtain accurate estimates of the round-trip times (RTT). © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Interprofessional education is a pedagogical approach which allows health care practitioners to develop a clear under- standing and appreciation of the roles, expertise, and unique contributions of their disciplines as well as those of the other participating health care providers. It also helps build effec- tive team relationships which is essential for optimal health care delivery. Interactive virtual simulation environments, such as serious games, can be used to augment traditional classroom-based interprofessional teaching methods as mul- tiple team members may participate in the simulation si- multaneously regardless of their physical location or time of day.
