In this work we study the combination of multicost routing and variable transmission power in wireless ad-hoc networks. In multicost routing, each link is assigned a cost vector consisting of several parameters. These parameters are treated separately and are combined at the end of the algorithm using various optimization functions, corresponding to different routing schemes, for selecting the optimal path. The cost parameters we use are the hop count, the interference caused, the node residual energies, and the node transmission powers. We assume that nodes can use power control to adjust their transmission power to the desired level. The experiments conducted show that the combination of multicost routing and adjustable transmission power can lead to reduced interference and energy consumption, improving network performance and lifetime.

In recent years, technologies have been introduced offering a large amount of computing and networking resources. New applications such as Google AdSense and BitTorrent can profit from the use of these resources. An efficient way of discovering and reserving these resources is by using the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) concept. SOA can be considered as a philosophy or paradigm in organizing and utilizing services and capabilities that may be under the control of different ownership domains. This paper presents an architecture that can be used to support end-to-end resource virtualization for Web 2.0 applications and in particular for peer-to-peer applications by using the Service Oriented Architecture concept.

This paper details our highly successful scholarship and academic support program to retain and graduate students in four academic departments: Mechanical engineering, Mathematics, computer engineering, and computer Science (EMC2). The EMC2Scholars' program is supported by a 4-year grant from the National Science Foundation's CSEMS (computer Science, engineering and Mathematics Scholarships) program and matching funds from the Rochester institute of technology (RIT). The project, to expire in August 2006, was recently granted a one-year no-cost extension. The paper describes the processes for selection of scholars and renewal of scholarship, and includes data on department distribution, student demographics and retention. It describes programmatic elements that worked or did not work in retaining students in CSEMS degree programs. The program's retention rates exceed RIT's averages - at each year level and within each of the four academic programs. The program has been successful in developing a partnership among the four academic departments, and has strengthened the coordination mechanisms with the supporting units. Successful EMC2elements are being deployed elsewhere at RIT to retain female and minority students. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

Along with the widespread deployment of the third generation cellular networks, the fast-improving capabilities of the mobile devices, content and service providers are increasingly interested in supporting multicast communications over wireless networks and in particular over universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS). To this direction, the third generation partnership project (3 GPP) is currently standardizing the multimedia broadcast/multicast service (MBMS) framework of UMTS. In this paper, we present an overview of the MBMS multicast mode of UMTS. We analytically present the multicast mode of the MBMS and analyze its performance in terms of packet delivery cost under various network topologies, cell types and multicast users' distributions. Furthermore, for the evaluation of the scheme, we consider different transport channels for the transmission of the data over the UTRAN interfaces.

This paper describes annotations for the Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese. The information we annotated to the corpus includes morphemes, clause units, dependency structures, summaries, and discourse structures. They are integrated in the form of XML. Morphological information was semi-automatically annotated to the transcribed text by reducing the human labor cost within the framework of morphological annotation that we proposed. Next, clause unites were detected based on the morphological information as basic units for our annotation. Then, dependency structures, summaries, discourse structures were annotated based on the clause units.

This paper proposes a real-time navigation system for an AUV that takes advantage of the complementary performance of a sensor suite including a DVL, a compass, a depth sensor and altimeter sensors with a feature based motion estimator using vision. To allow for real-time performance of the vision based motion estimator a simple but fast correlation algorithm is used for feature matching. The compass and the depth sensors are used to bound the drift of the heading and depth estimations respectively. The altimeter is required in order to translate the feature displacements measured from the images into the metric displacements of the robot. While the robot must rely on DVL navigation above a certain altitude where vision is useless, DVL measurements can be complemented with higher frequency accurate motion estimates from the vision system when navigating close to the seafloor. Distributed virtual environments tend to become a de facto solution for large-scale networked virtual environments. One of the key issues and problems that need to be handled in the design of a scalable and effective distributed virtual environment system is the partitioning problem, which refers to the efficient assignment of the system's workload to the available resources of the system. This paper presents an object driven partitioning approach based on the partitioning algorithm of Lui & Chan, who proposed a three step technique for balancing the workload among the servers of the Distributed Virtual Environment.

Large-scale sensor networks, monitoring an environment at close range with high spatial and temporal resolutions are expected to play an important role in various applications, e.g., assessing the "health" of machines;environmental, medical, food-safety, and habitat monitoring;inventory control, building automation, etc. Ensuring the security of these complex and yet resource-constrained systems has emerged as one of the most pressing challenges for researchers. In this paper (i) we present the major threats, and (ii) we present a new approach for decentralized energy efficient intrusion detection that can be used to improve security from both external and internal adversaries.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are used in many applications which often include the monitoring and recording of sensitive information. Hence, their critical importance raises many security concerns. In the context of WSNs, jamming is the type of attack which interferes with the radio frequencies used by network nodes. In the event that an attacker uses a rather powerful jamming source, disruptions of WSNs proper function are likely to occur. As a result, the use of countermeasures against jamming in WSN environments is of immense importance. The main contribution of this article is the discussion of various defence methods against jamming that would allow a WSN to survive and work properly in a hostile jamming environment. Our focus is on frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) and direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS), two of the most effective countermeasures against jamming. We suggest the use of a specific FHSS technique in 5 GHz band with 55 frequency channels wherein the channel sequence is generated using a secret word, known only to the sink and the sensor nodes, as a seed. Each channel uses DSSS modulation with 16 bit Pseudo Noise (PN) code, which derives from the same secret word used for FHSS channel generation.

In this paper we introduce the NTCIR6 Opinion Analysis Pilot Task, information about the Chinese, Japanese, and English data, plans for future opinion analysis tasks at NTCIR, and a brief overview of the evaluation results. This pilot task is a sentence-level opinion identification and polarity detection task run over data from a comparable corpus in three languages: Chinese, English, and Japanese. We have manually annotated documents for this task in each language, producing what we believe to be the first multilingual opinion analysis data set over comparable data. Six participants submitted Chinese system results, three Japanese, and six English for this pilot task. We plan to release the data to the research community, and hope to spur further research into cross-lingual opinion analysis and its use in other NLP tasks. In particular, we look forward to researchers using this data to investigate cross-cultural perspective differences based on automatic sentiment analysis. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.
