Today we are experiencing a major reconsideration of the computing paradigm, as witnessed by the abundance and increasing frequency of use of terms such as ambient intelligence, ubiquitous computing, disappearing computer, grid computer, global computing and mobile ad-hoc networks. Systems that can be described with such terms are of a dynamic, with no clear physical boundary, nature and it seems that it is impossible (or, at least, difficult) to define sharply a number of important properties holding with certainty as well as holding throughout the whole lifetime of the system. One such system property, which is important for the viability of a system, is trust. Our departure point is the assumption that it seems very difficult to define static system properties related to trust and expect that they hold eternally in the rapidly changing systems falling under the new computing paradigm. One should, rather, attempt to define trust in terms of properties that hold with some limiting probability as the system grows and try to establish conditions that ensure that "good" properties hold almost certainly. Based on this viewpoint, in this paper we provide a new framework for defining trust through formally definable properties that hold, almost certainly, in the limit in randomly growing combinatorial structures that model "shapeless" computing systems (e.g., ad-hoc networks), drawing on results that establish the threshold behavior of predicates written in the first and second order logic

This paper proposes a business model for the successful operation of the currently developing broadband metropolitan area networks in Greece. Having recorded and examined relevant international practices, we describe in detail the way that these networks should be managed, operated, maintained and expanded. Taking into consideration that these infrastructures will alter the broadband map of Greece widely, that Greece currently has one of the lowest broadband penetration percentages in Europe and that the proper exploitation of the networks to be deployed could boost the demand for broadband connections and applications, the proposition of the business model appears to be of vital importance. We present the proposed business model in detail including information regarding network management and network expansion of the broadband metropolitan networks and viability issues regarding the authority which will manage the broadband metropolitan networks.

With the rapid progress of mobile devices and positioning technologies, Trajectory databases (TD) have been in the core of database research during the last decade. Analysis and knowledge discovery in TD is an emerging field which has recently gained great interest. Extracting knowledge from TD using certain types of mining techniques, such as clustering and classification, impose that there is a mean to quantify the distance between two trajectories. Having as a main objective the support of effective similarity query processing, existing approaches utilize generic distance metrics that ignore the peculiarities of the trajectories as complex spatio-temporal data types. In this paper, we define a novel set of trajectory distance operators based on primitive (space and time) as well as derived parameters of trajectories (speed and direction). Aiming at providing a powerful toolkit for analysts who require producing distance matrices with different semantics as input to mining tasks, we develop algorithms for each of the proposed operators. The efficiency of our approach is evaluated through an experimental study on classification and clustering tasks using synthetic and real trajectory datasets.

Partitioning constitutes one of the most critical challenges a distributed virtual environment needs to handle and is related to the efficient assignment of the existing entities of the virtual world to the available resources of the system. The efficient partitioning arises from the need of high consistency maintenance among participating users' view, as virtual reality applications are characterized by the high degree of realism they aim to achieve. To the direction of partitioning algorithms, a lot of work has been done, which has been more intense due to the evolution of network technologies and the familiarization of users with virtual reality systems. This paper presents a partitioning approach, which is based on the degree of interaction of each virtual object and the behavior of the participating users, in terms of moving trends, which is usually directed by the actions they can perform on the surrounding objects. In particular, the partitioning takes place when the virtual world contains only objects, in the sense that no avatars are yet connected and objects' attributes are handled as indicators for avatars' future behavior in the system. This prediction of avatars' behavior based on objects' attributes defines the initial partitioning of the virtual space.

Data propagation in wireless sensor networks is usually performed as a multihop process. To deliver a single message, the resources of many sensor nodes are used and a lot of energy is spent. Recently, a novel approach is catching momentum because of important applications; that of having a mobile sink move inside the network area and collects the data with low energy cost. Here we extend this line of research by proposing and evaluating three new protocols. Our protocols are novel in a) investigating the impact of having many mobile sinks; b) in weak models with restricted mobility, proposing and evaluating a mix of static and mobile sinks; and c) proposing a distributed protocol that tends to equally spread the sinks in the network to further improve performance. Our protocols are simple, based on randomization and assume locally obtainable information. We perform an extensive evaluation via simulation; our findings demonstrate that our solutions scale very well with respect to the number of sinks and significantly reduce energy consumption and delivery delay

Kernel damage caused by insects and fungi is one of the most common reason for poor flour quality. Cracked hazelnut shells are prone to infection by cancer producing mold. We propose a new adaptive time-frequency classification procedure for detecting cracked hazelnut shells and damaged wheat kernels using impact acoustic emissions recorded by dropping wheat kernels or hazelnut shells on a steel plate. The proposed algorithm is based on a flexible local discriminant bases (F-LDB) procedure. The F-LDB method combines local cosine packet analysis and a frequency axis clustering approach which supports individual time and frequency band adaptation. Discriminant features are extracted from the adaptively segmented acoustic signal, sorted according to a Fisher class separability criterion, post processed by principal component analysis and fed to linear discriminant. We describe experimental results that establish the superior performance of the proposed approach when compared with prior techniques reported in the literature or used in the field. Our approach achieved classification accuracy in paired separation of undamaged wheat kernels from IDK, Pupae and Scab damaged kernels with 96%, 82% and 94%. For hazelnuts the accuracy was 97.1%.

The Center for Pre-College Programs at New Jersey institute of technology offers a series of summer programs designed to increase academically talented students' interest in the fields of science, mathematics, engineering and technology in an effort to increase the number of young students, particularly girls and other traditionally underrepresented minorities, who pursue technological careers. One program in particular, Woman in engineering and technology, called FEMME, was designed specifically for young women in an effort to increase the number of women interested in engineering and other technological careers. Most of the programs span grades four to eight because middle school is such an important time for all students to begin thinking about future careers. research on engineering recruitment indicates that many students, particularly young girls, do not know about engineering careers and have few adults or peers discussing careers in engineering with them. As a result not enough students explore engineering or other technical fields as a career option and therefore do not prepare academically. Programs such as those offered by the Center for Pre-College Programs can be instrumental in informing young students about careers in engineering and technology and assure they receive the academic background required to study for these careers in college. Further, because boys and girls do not differ much in technical abilities but rather in their attitudes toward technological careers including engineering until the later high school years, single-gender programs like FEMME can be particularly effect in reaching young girls and changing their attitudes. Initial evaluations of the FEMME program have been positive but they have been primarily formative in nature. The dynamics of a single qubit, encoded in the charge states of a singly ionized phosphorus atom embedded in silicon bulk material are studied. For the simulation of the system a suitably modified version of the MATLAB package SCHRODINGER was used. Preliminary results were in agreement with previously published work regarding single qubit rotations. For the Hadamard Gate, the duration of the pulse T was computed as a function of input parameters the results produced outputs of the order of 9×10−10 sec.

This paper proposes a real-time navigation system for an AUV that takes advantage of the complementary performance of a sensor suite including a DVL, a compass, a depth sensor and altimeter sensors with a feature based motion estimator using vision. To allow for real-time performance of the vision based motion estimator a simple but fast correlation algorithm is used for feature matching. The compass and the depth sensors are used to bound the drift of the heading and depth estimations respectively. The altimeter is required in order to translate the feature displacements measured from the images into the metric displacements of the robot. While the robot must rely on DVL navigation above a certain altitude where vision is useless, DVL measurements can be complemented with higher frequency accurate motion estimates from the vision system when navigating close to the seafloor.

In this paper, we propose a novel, exact border-based approach that provides an optimal solution for the hiding of sensitive frequent itemsets by (i) minimally extending the original database by a synthetically generated database part - the database extension, (ii) formulating the creation of the database extension as a constraint satisfaction problem that is solved by using binary integer programming, and (Hi) providing an approximate solution close to the optimal one when an ideal solution does not exist. Extending the original database for sensitive itemset hiding is proved to provide optimal solutions to an extended set of hiding problems compared to previous approaches and to provide solutions of higher quality.
