This paper presents landmark based self-localization of a two-wheeled differential drive autonomous mobile robot in a known but highly dynamic environment. The robot is equipped with a pivoted stereo vision system, two digital encoders, a gyro sensor, two lOg accelerometers and a magnetic compass. Global position of the robot is estimated using range measurements of distinct features such as color transitions, corners, junctions and line intersections in the robot environment. However, due to scarcity of distinct features, it is not possible to extract the minimum required features for global position estimation from everywhere in the state space. Therefore, the robot position is tracked between intermittent global localization to have an all time position estimate available to the robot. The robot observation vector is composed of range and bearing measurements of distinct features in the robot environment which is merged with the current position estimate to suppress the accumulating errors. Simulation results illustrate the performance of the location tracker.

The Generation Challenge programme (GCP) is a global crop research consortium directed toward crop improvement through the application of comparative biology and genetic resources characterization to plant breeding. A key consortium research activity is the development of a GCP crop bioinformatics platform to support GCP research. This platform includes the following: (i) shared, public platform-independent domain models, ontology, and data formats to enable interoperability of data and analysis flows within the platform;(ii) web service and registry technologies to identify, share, and integrate information across diverse, globally dispersed data sources, as well as to access high-performance computational (HPC) facilities for computationally intensive, high-throughput analyses of project data;(iii) platform-specific middleware reference implementations of the domain model integrating a suite of public (largely open-access/-source) databases and software tools into a workbench to facilitate biodiversity analysis, comparative analysis of crop genomic data, and plant breeding decision making.

Sensor networks supported by recent technological advances in low power wireless communications along with silicon integration of various functionalities are emerging as a critically important computer class that enable novel and low cost applications. There are many fundamental problems that sensor networks research will have to address in order to ensure a reasonable degree of cost and system quality. Cluster formation and cluster head selection are important problems in sensor network applications and can drastically affect the network's communication energy dissipation. However, selecting of the cluster head is not easy in different environments which may have different characteristics. In this paper, in order to deal with this problem we propose a power reduction algorithm for sensor networks based on fuzzy logic. We evaluate the proposed method by simulations and show that proposed system makes a good selection of the cluster head.

This paper addresses the problem of frame interpolation for Wyner-Ziv video coding. A novel frame interpolation method based on block-adaptive matching algorithm for motion estimation is presented. This scheme enables block size adaptation to local activity within frames using block merging and splitting techniques. The efficiency of the proposed method is evaluated in transform domain Wyner-Ziv video coding. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over existing frame interpolation techniques.

Word segmentation is a crucial step for segmentation-free document analysis systems and is used for creating an index based on word matching. In this paper, we propose a novel methodology for word segmentation in historical and degraded machine-printed documents. The proposed technique faces problems such as having text of different size, having text and non-text areas lying very near and having non-straight and warped text lines. It is based on: (i) a dynamic run length smoothing algorithm that helps grouping together homogeneous text regions, (ii) noise and punctuation marks removal as well as on obstacle detection in order to facilitate the segmentation process and (iv) a draft text line estimation procedure that guides the final word segmentation result. After testing on numerous historical and degraded machine-printed documents, it has turned out that our methodology performs better compared to current state-of-the-art word segmentation techniques for historical and degraded machine-printed documents.

The PosEye system is basically a position measurement system which takes images of the reference. The infra-red LEDs which emits IR lights is captured by the CCD and is used as the reference. In this system the absolute positioning and orientation were made with the help of a PosEye. The PosEye is normally fixed on a robot arm or the object which requires orientation of its own position in correspondence to its reference points in the working area. This paper discusses general ideas about reference markers, set-up procedures, and issues behind the sensor. This mainly includes the principles of PosEye sensor, basics of vision and cameras. The paper details the experiments in which results were obtained through the PosEye system with the help of electronics and PosEye camera. In the experimental setup, the connection of PosEye with the electronic application is presented, the usage of PosEye and the robot control system communication with the PosEye system using coordinate system. The working of the PosEye system is observed by taking images on the reference plate and finding the co-ordinates (x, y, z). The manipulation of the obtained images to the robot for a movement is also studied.

A generic and novel distribution, referred to as Nakagami, constructed as the product of N statistically independent, but not necessarily identically distributed, Nakagami- m random variables (RVs), is introduced and analyzed. The proposed distribution turns out to be a very convenient tool for modelling cascaded Nakagami- m fading channels and analyzing the performance of digital communications systems operating over such channels. The moments-generating, probability density, cumulative distribution, and moments functions of the N * Nakagami distribution are developed in closed form using the Meijer's G -function. Using these formulas, generic closed-form expressions for the outage probability, amount of fading, and average error probabilities for several binary and multilevel modulation signals of digital communication systems operating over the N * Nakagami fading and the additive white Gaussian noise channel are presented. Complementary numerical and computer simulation performance evaluation results verify the correctness of the proposed formulation. The suitability of the N * Nakagami fading distribution to approximate the lognormal distribution is also being investigated. Using Kolmogorov--Smirnov tests, the rate of convergence of the central limit theorem as pertaining to the multiplication of Nakagami- m RVs is quantified.

The equalization of MIMO frequency selective channels is a challenging task due to the increased filter lengths required and the presence of interstream interference. In wideband systems where high delay spread channels arise and long transmission bursts are employed, adaptive equalization is necessary. In this work, we develop an adaptive MIMO DFE for wideband time varying systems. To reduce computational complexity and accelerate convergence rate, the equalizer is fully implemented in the frequency domain, while an inherent causality problem is efficiently solved through an iterative scheme. As verified by simulations, the proposed method offers a good trade off in terms of complexity and convergence, compared to other related adaptive algorithms.

During 1976–1977 academic years he taught as assistant professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering University of Iowa. Then Dr. Bien joined Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology summer 1977 and is now Professor of Control Engineering at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science KAIST. Dr. Bien was the president of the Korea Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Systems Society during 1990–1995 and also the general chair of IFSA World Congress 1993 and for FUZZ-IEEE99 respectively. He is currently co-Editor-in-Chief for International Journal of Fuzzy Systems (IJFS) Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems and a regional editor for the International Journal of Intelligent Automation and Soft Computing. He has been serving as Vice President for IFSA since 1997 and is now Chief Chairman of Institute of Electronics Engineers of Korea and Director of Humanfriendly Welfare Robot System Research Center. His current research interests include intelligent control methods with emphasis on fuzzy logic systems service robotics and rehabilitation engineering and large-scale industrial control systems. Kwang-Hyun Park:received the B.S. M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from KAIST Korea in 1994 19997 and 2001 respectively. He is now a researcher at Human-friendly Welfare Robot System Research Center. His research interests include learning control machine learning human-friendly interfaces and service robotics.

It has been found that some huge overshoot in the sense of sup-norm may be observed when typical iterative learning control (ILC) algorithms are applied to LTI systems, even though monotone convergence in the sense of λ-norm is guaranteed. In this paper, a new ILC algorithm with adjustment of learning interval is proposed to resolve such an undesirable phenomenon, and it is shown that the output error can be monotonically converged to zero in the sense of sup-norm when the proposed ILC algorithm is applied. A numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Cell adjusts its regulatory machinery in response to environmental changes to maintain its basic functionality. Different cellular conditions require different regulatory mechanisms that tightly regulate genes. Due to this tightly coordinated regulation, the expression of those genes should show consistent patterns within the same cellular contexts while such consistency disappears when corresponding context is disrupted. Based on previously developed statistics to identify genes whose expression pattern is significantly more consistent within a specific biologic context, we have developed an algorithm to identify novel cellular contexts and learn underlying context-specific gene regulatory networks.
