This paper addresses the problem of face recognition in the presence of facial deformations caused by expressions. An isometric mapping between surfaces is assumed, which allows preservation of geodesic distance between facial points. Subject to this assumption, we propose a novel technique which integrates 2D and 3D information to establish a new deformation invariant representation of the face. The 3D surface is used to define a polar geodesic coordinate space which is independent of the intrinsic geometry of the face. The corresponding color image is embedded in this space and serves as the recognition data. A preceding stage of hierarchical diffeomorphic grid-based image warping before the recognition process combined with a lip segmentation technique are also employed to increase the overall performance of the algorithm.

A new content-based algorithm is proposed for efficient delivery of video sequences under networks of low and variable bandwidth. It dynamically discards the audiovisual content that cannot be afforded by the network, (e.g., due to bandwidth variations), at a content cost, which outperforms the popular linear frame skipping method. The algorithm estimates a) the amount of information that can be currently delivered by the network and b) the most representative of the frames that would be normally transmitted. All calculations are performed directly on the MPEG compressed domain requiring minimal decoding of the captured multimedia information. The computational complexity of the proposed scheme is also minimal and thus it can be applied in almost real time. A proposed objective evaluation scheme reveals the validity of the approach

Switched-Beam Arrays (SBAs) are considered as an attractive alternative to fully adaptive arrays, mostly due to easy installation and inexpensive maintenance. In this paper, a new technique is proposed in order to design dual-band switched-beam dipole arrays. The scope of the proposed technique is to design arrays with balanced radiation characteristics at both frequency bands. This is accomplished by joint optimization of the array's architectural characteristics (topology, elements length and radius) and excitation coefficients, for operation at both frequency bands, while properly exploiting mutual coupling among array elements. Numerical results are presented in the case of a uniform, circular, eight-element dipole array, operating at 2.4GHz and 3.5GHz, and excellent agreement to design considerations is demonstrated. Furthermore, a technique for the design of an appropriate dual-band dipole is presented.

In this paper the impact of user's hand holding a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) terminal on the system performance is investigated. A 4times4 MIMO system is considered with a personal digital assistant (PDA) terminal equipped with a compact array of 4 patch elements. The radiation patterns of the antenna elements are simulated in the presence of the other elements and in the presence of a user's hand. The obtained patterns are used to evaluate the covariance matrix of the receive antenna which is incorporated in a correlation-based MIMO channel model. MIMO channel capacity is calculated to demonstrate the capacity degradation caused by the user's hand.

To create an understanding of enterprises and the ways they do business, a starting point could be to identify the main actors and the values transferred between them. Business models are created in order to make clear who the business actors are in a business case and to make their relations explicit. The relations are formulated in terms of values exchanged between the actors. The purpose of the work reported in this paper is to create a better understanding of business models by identifying basic notions used in such models. It does so by constructing a common ontology based on three established business model ontologies: e3-value, REA, and BMO. By means of a careful analysis of these ontologies a conceptual schema is created that defines the common concepts. An example is worked out that explains how the common ontology should be understood.

During the past few years, the New Jersey institute of technology (NJIT) has initiated several projects to determine best practices in distance learning education and to apply them to courses in the Newark College of engineering. The engineering college has lagged behind other colleges within the university in developing and implementing distance learning courses, and concerns about the quality of distance learning courses are one of the main reasons for this. The Office of Institutional research and Planning at NJIT has undertaken a study of distance learning courses offered during the 2003-2004 academic year. The study examines a total of 150 courses, 3, 491 students and 7,701 course enrollments;approximately 1/5 of the enrollments are in distance learning courses and the remaining students enrolled in traditional face-to-face courses and served as a control group. The study examines a wide variety of parameters, including overall course performance, student satisfaction with the course and the instructor, delivery format for distance learning courses (multimedia, text, multimedia + text), instructor rank, instructor training for distance learning instruction, distance learning platform (WebCT® and WebBoard®), and ease of use of technology. This paper presents the results of this study and how they can be applied to produce improved distance learning courses in the engineering college, in all colleges within NJIT, and at other universities. Among its most significant results, the study highlights the need for instructors to receive training in teaching, learning, and technology;the preference of students for courses that use multiple delivery formats;and the greater student satisfaction at NJIT for courses that use WebCT as their asynchronous learning network platform. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

This paper proposes a method based on composite indexes to reflect the level of computer-supported cooperative activity. This approach is innovative in the sense that it extends a purely quantitative approach with some qualitative contextual elements. Indeed, the indexes integrate two basic features of the computer-supported interactions within a group: the number of occurrences and the cooperative nature of the interactions. The paper describes the design of the indexes and shows their interest with simulated cases.

The evolution of next generation networking middleware (NGNM) yields to the provision of personalized next-generation active services, each one with different traffic characteristics and networking requirements for security, billing, QoS (Quality of Service), mobility, etc. in an efficient and economical usage of network resources. The introduction and well establishment of the active services concept, which will be services capable of dynamically adapting themselves to various underlying networking environment conditions according to the instructions of NGNM and the requirements posed by the end user, constitutes the major goal of this paper. In order to avoid proprietary and custom implementation solutions, an initial and generic active services reference architecture that can be followed by potential active services developers is presented. Finally, an implemented prototype that follows the proposed reference architecture provides a first quick validation of the discussed active service concept.
