This paper briefly discusses the motivating factors that led to formation of an active collaborative group of engineering and education faculty at Virginia Tech. This group is actively pursuing a number of engineering education research activities and has been successful in winning two grants from the NSF in first 12 months of their collaborative efforts. These collaborative activities are targeted at improving engineering pedagogy at Virginia Tech and began with a planning grant from the NSF in September 2003. A 15-month Masters/Licensure program has been developed specifically for licensing engineering graduates in technology Education. A number of assessment activities have been initiated for analyzing curricular changes beginning with the freshman-engineering program. Use of electronic portfolio in engineering instruction is being explored. The curricula of freshman engineering and bioprocess engineering are being reformulated using a theme based spiral curriculum approach, which is part of a major research grant, under the department-level reform program of the NSF, that began in September '04. The interdisciplinary group has developed/ is working on a number of research proposals for expanding the scope of ongoing studies. The information presented should be very useful for new engineering educators who are exploring similar collaborative ventures elsewhere.
Disassembly process decomposes a product into parts or subassemblies. Due to the uncertainties that occur during this process, designing and balancing a disassembly line is a very challenging problem. To deal with the...

Optical burst switching has been receiving increased attention as a promising technology for building the next-generation optical Internet. This article presents the design and discusses the implementation of an overlay mode optical burst-switched network testbed. A flexible "transceiver + forwarding" edge node architecture is proposed to perform both electronic burst assembly/disassembly and optical burst forwarding. It is designed to provide class of service and wavelength selection for locally generated bursts, and transparency to cut-through bursts. The functional modules of the control plane and related key design issues are presented. In particular, we discuss a scheduling mechanism that efficiently combines two different contention resolutions in space and wavelength domains. Experimental results show the effectiveness of this scheme in reducing burst blocking probability. Furthermore, the performance of the network testbed and corresponding methods of improving it are discussed.

In agent-mediated marketplaces, autonomous agents deploy automated bidding mechanisms in order to increase revenue for humans. The ability of agents to estimate the next prices to be revealed in an auction, by applying forecasting, is a key element for efficient and successful bidding. In open outcry auctions, such as English and Dutch, information about bidders behavior is revealed at each round. This paper proposes a bid calculation function based on forecasting of the next price in English and Dutch auctions. The forecasting is based on two linear adaptive filters for stochastic estimation, whose parameters are calculated using a genetic algorithm. In order to test the efficiency of the two bidding methods and to benchmark the performance of the two filters, we conduct a set of experiments and present the results.

This paper describes a proposed system for the recognition and labeling of graphical objects within architectural and engineering documents that integrates statistical language models (SLMs) with traditional classifiers. SLMs are techniques used with success in natural language processing (NLP) for use in such tasks as speech recognition and information retrieval. This research proposes the adaptation of SLMs for use with graphical notation i.e. statistical graphical language model (SGLMs). Reasoning of the similarities between natural language and technical graphics is presented and the proposed use of SGLM for graphical object recognition is described.

Interest in context-aware computing has expanded the use of sensing technologies. The accelerometer is one of the most widely used sensors for capturing context because it is small, inexpensive, lightweight, and self-operable. In efforts to obtain behavioral patterns, many studies have reported the use of multiple accelerometers attached to the human body. However, this is difficult to implement in real-life situations and may not fully address the context of user interaction. In contrast, the present study employed a single tri-axial accelerometer attached to a handheld computing device instead of to a user. The objective was to determine what contextual information could be obtained from this more feasible, albeit limited, source of acceleration data. Data analyses confirmed that changes in both mobility and lighting conditions induced statistically significant differences in the output of the accelerometer. Copyright 2005 ACM.

The Semantic Web is about adding formal structure and explicit semantics to web content for the purpose of more efficient information management and access by both humans and computers. Through the use of machine understandable semantics, web resources become much easier and more readily accessible. Populating the Semantic Web with multimedia metadata requires for appropriate technologies to support both the analysis (metadata extraction) and the annotation (metadata creation) processes. The media- and content-specific semantics of multimedia resources pose great challenges in terms of capturing and manipulating the two layer semantics given the available knowledge representation formalisms. The Knowledge Web project, advancing ontology technologyresearch efforts and ensuring transferring the semantic web from academia to industry, has provided solutions to some of the most challenging multimedia related problems.

In this paper, an approach for providing unified access to heterogeneous distributed cultural heritage collections is presented. The proposed approach is developed within the framework of the REACH Greek National Project with the overall aim to provide a Web portal enabling access to different databases of cultural content with emphasis on multimedia material. In order to achieve this, the project employs ontology-based representation of cultural content, multimedia content-based search algorithms, hybrid ontology and content-based access and user-friendly search interfaces. This fusion approach provides users with resources for building queries of multimedia repositories sequentially using multiple individual search tools, and performs higher quality searching. In the current stage of development, real content such as inscriptions and coins from the Greco-Roman time period, has successfully been incorporated in the system
