The purpose of this paper is to present a case study of the development, implementation and performance analysis of an autonomous flight control strategy for a 1-meter small-sized unmanned aerial vehicle. Firstly, a learning algorithm based open-loop control is proposed by simulating a skilled human operator's manipulation of the aircraft. This is aimed to generate a set of command data inputs and investigate the multi-channel control characteristics with the open-loop control. Secondly, a feedforward plus a proportional and derivative (PD) feedback control is employed to control the vehicle in following the command data to complete the loitering flight. The PD control gains are tuned automatically according to the attitude of the vehicle using the fuzzy logic theory. Thirdly, autonomous flight experiments conducted on a 1-meter small-sized aerial vehicle demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method. A humanoid robot under real-world environments usually hears mixtures of sounds, and thus three capabilities are essential for robot audition; sound source localization, separation, and recognition of separated sounds. We have adopted the missing feature theory (MFT) for automatic recognition of separated speech, and developed the robot audition system. A microphone array is used along with a real-time dedicated implementation of geometric source separation (GSS) and a multi-channel post-filter that gives us a further reduction of interferences from other sources. The automatic speech recognition based on MFT recognizes separated sounds by generating missing feature masks automatically from the post-filtering step. The main advantage of this approach for humanoid robots resides in the fact that the ASR with a clean acoustic model can adapt the distortion of separated sound by consulting the post-filter feature masks. In this paper, we used the improved Julius as an MFT-based automatic speech recognizer (ASR). The Julius is a real-time large vocabulary continuous speech recognition (LVCSR) system. We performed the experiment to evaluate our robot audition system. In this experiment, the system recognizes a sentence, not an isolated word. We showed the improvement in the system performance through three simultaneous speech recognition on the humanoid SIG2.

While the first two are frequently addressed, the last one has not been studied so much. We present a system that gives a humanoid robot the ability to localize, separate and recognize simultaneous sound sources. A microphone array is used along with a real-time dedicated implementation of Geometric Source Separation (GSS) and a multi-channel post-filter that gives us a further reduction of interferences from other sources. An automatic speech recognizer (ASR) based on the Missing Feature Theory (MFT) recognizes separated sounds in real-time by generating missing feature masks automatically from the post-filtering step. The main advantage of this approach for humanoid robots resides in the fact that the ASR with a clean acoustic model can adapt the distortion of separated sound by consulting the post-filter feature masks. Recognition rates are presented for three simultaneous speakers located at 2m from the robot. Use of both the post-filter and the missing feature mask results in an average reduction in error rate of 42% (relative).

This article demonstrates results and experiences gained in the area of multilayer internetworking, with emphasis on bandwidth on-demand provisioning as well as resource and restoration management. Behavioral characteristics and numerical results were obtained from a management system prototype implemented and tested in an appropriately adapted commercial WDM environment enhanced with multivendor gigabit IP routers. The management solution, the testbed environment, and a representative evaluation scenario are presented as a means of explaining in detail the results that finally allow a global system assessment.

Distributed virtual reality: building a multi-user layer for the EVE Platform

dIn this paper, we present the design and implementation of a VRML97 multi-user layer, which is introduced in the EVE distributed virtual reality platform. Though other approaches use a VRML node insertion mechanism, Such as VSPLUS, or a substitution mechanism, Such as SPIN-3D, our approach uses a removal mechanism. Main consideration of our multi-user extension is the ease of transforming single-user virtual worlds into multi-user virtual worlds, as well as the conformity with any standard VRML97 browser. Furthermore, we present the EVE' s communication platform, which can be used in order to support Collaborative Virtual Environments. Main issues regarding the effective network communication as well as the initialization of the 3D scene are discussed in this paper. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper describes the robust reading competitions for ICDAR 2003. With the rapid growth in research over the last few years on recognizing text in natural scenes, there is an urgent need to establish some common benchmark datasets and gain a clear understanding of the current state of the art. We use the term 'robust reading' to refer to text images that are beyond the capabilities of current commercial OCR packages. We chose to break down the robust reading problem into three subproblems and run competitions for each stage, and also a competition for the best overall system. The subproblems we chose were text locating, character recognition and word recognition. By breaking down the problem in this way, we hoped to gain a better understanding of the state of the art in each of the subproblems. Furthermore, our methodology involved storing detailed results of applying each algorithm to each image in the datasets, allowing researchers to study in depth the strengths and weaknesses of each algorithm. The text-locating contest was the only one to have any entries. We give a brief description of each entry and present the results of this contest, showing cases where the leading entries succeed and fail. We also describe an algorithm for combining the outputs of the individual text locators and show how the combination scheme improves on any of the individual systems. © Springer-Verlag 2005.
