This paper presents a novel test vector ordering method for average power consumption minimization. The proposed method orders the test vectors taking into account the expected switching activity at the primary inputs and at a very small set of internal lines of the circuit under test. The computational time required by the proposed method is very small while the power reduction achieved is very close to the best, with respect to power reduction, most time-consuming method. Experimental results show that apart from average power reduction, the proposed method achieves significant peak power reduction too.

QoS provisioning according to the DifTServ framework has raised the requirements for pricing mechanisms that preserve the potential and flexibility of DiffServ. At the same time, such mechanisms should reflect resource usage, allocate resources efficiently, reimburse costs or maximize service provision profits and lead customers to requesting services that will maximize their revenue. This work proposes a policy for pricing based on resource allocation by a particular category of DiffServ-based services for aggregated traffic in the case of transport networks. Our research takes into account the particularities that apply to the case of DiffServ services' provision over transport networks while imposing minimal overload and a-priori estimation of costs. The detailed pricing methodology is presented and experimentally evaluated.

We describe the design and implementation of secure and robust protocol and system for a national electronic lottery. Electronic lotteries at a national level are a viable cost effective alternative to mechanical ones when there is a business need to support many types of "games of chance" and to allow increased drawing frequency. Electronic lotteries are, in fact, extremely high risk financial application: If one discovers a way to predict or otherwise claim the winning numbers (even once) the result is huge financial damages. Moreover, the e-lottery process is complex, which increases the possibility of fraud or costly accidental failures. In addition, a national lottery must adhere to auditability and (regulatory) fairness requirements regarding its drawings. Our mechanism, which we believe is the first one of its kind to be described in the literature, builds upon a number of cryptographic primitives that ensure the unpredictability of the winning numbers, the prevention of their premature leakages and prevention of fraud. We also provide measures for auditability, fairness, and trustworthiness of the process. Besides cryptography, we incorporate security mechanisms that eliminate various risks along the entire process. Our system which was commissioned by a national organization, was implemented in the field and has been operational and active for a while, now. © IFCA/Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

The issue of load impedance characterization in the residential environment is addressed in this work. The transfer function of any point-to-point link on any indoor power line network depends on the communications characteristics of the medium and the presence of residential loads, in the form of electrical appliances. Measurements of the transfer function variations on an experimental setup, caused by an unknown residential load, can be exploited to determine the value of its impedance. In this paper, we propose two new methods of impedance identification and analyze their accuracy and performance limitations.

We perform a statistical analysis of failure data of equipment obtained from a real automated pizza production line. Based on this data, we develop and solve a simple model of a quality inspector who visits several such lines to detect possible quality problems in the production process. His objective is to allocate the number of his visits to the different workstations of the lines so as minimize the total production time of undetected, defective products.

In this paper we describe an efficient methodology for rapid prototyping of data transmission systems based on Stateflow/Simulink models using a multi-level system development and testing approach. Transmission systems incorporate multi-domain functions and algorithms, i.e. physical layer circuits and communication protocol controllers. The Stateflow/Simulink environment enables the development of precise simulation models that include signal and protocol processing units. The proposed prototyping methodology is based on the progressive translation of high-level model blocks into hardware/software modules of the prototype architecture using custom and/or automated code generation tools. A custom data exchange and synchronization interface between the Stateflow/Simulink workspace and the circuit modules enables the integration of the simulation model and the prototyping platform into a complete functional system. The application of the proposed methodology in the development of an ADSL modem in a custom prototyping platform is also described.

With the explosive growth of the World Wide Web, millions of documents are published and accessed on-line. Statistics show that a significant part of Web text information is encoded in Web images. Since Web images have special characteristics that sometimes distinguish them from other types of images, commercial OCR products often fail to recognize Web images due to their special characteristics. This paper proposes a novel Web image processing algorithm that aims to locate text areas and prepare them for OCR procedure with better results. Our methodology for text area identification has been fully integrated with an OCR engine and with an Information Extraction system. We present quantitative results for the performance of the OCR engine as well as qualitative results concerning its effects to the Information Extraction system. Experimental results obtained from a large corpus of Web images, demonstrate the efficiency of our methodology. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

More specifically, we consider the random graph model G_n,m, where a random graph is constructed by drawing uniformly and independently m edges out of the (Formula presented.) possible edges without repetition, and the random graph model G_n,mm where a random graph is constructed by the same process, but the an edge is allowed to be selected more than once. We prove that the property of a random graph G of the latter model having multiple edges is a threshold property, with threshold function t(n) = n. Over the last four years, a community of researchers working on Grid and High Performance Computing technologies started discussing the barriers and opportunities that grid technologies must face and exploit for the development of health-related applications. This interest lead to the first Healthgrid conference, held in Lyon, France, on January 16th–17th, 2003, with the focus of creating increased awareness about the possibilities and advantages linked to the deployment of grid technologies in health, ultimately targeting the creation of a European/international grid infrastructure for health. The topics of this conference converged with the position of the eHealth division of the European Commission, whose mandate from the Lisbon Meeting was "To develop an intelligent environment that enables ubiquitous management of citizens’ health status, and to assist health professionals in coping with some major challenges, risk management and the integration into clinical practice of advances in health knowledge." In this context "Health" involves not only clinical procedures but covers the whole range of information from molecular level (genetic and proteomic information) over cells and tissues, to the individual and finally the population level (social healthcare). Grid technology offers the opportunity to create a common working backbone for all different members of this large "health family" and will hopefully lead to an increased awareness and interoperability among disciplines. The first HealthGrid conference led to the creation of the Healthgrid association, a non-profit research association legally incorporated in France but formed from the broad community of European researchers and institutions sharing expertise in health grids. After the second Healthgrid conference, held in Clermont-Ferrand on January 29th–30th, 2004, the need for a "white paper" on the current status and prospective of health grids was raised. The objective of the proposed application is the development of a new interactive application for the simulation of Ancient Greek technology works, with the use of advanced virtual reality and computer vision technologies. In order to achieve these objectives haptic interaction mechanisms and a gesture recognition system were implemented in a virtual environment platform. A novel collision detection method was developed and virtual reality agents were used in order to achieve the desired results. The developed system was evaluated by real users and conclusions were drawn concerning the potentiality of the proposed application.
