In this paper a quantum computer based on the recombination processes happening in semiconductor devices is presented. A “data element” and a “computational element” are derived based on Schokley‐Read‐Hall statistics and they can later be used in order to manifest a simple and known quantum algorithm. Such a paradigm is shown by the application of the proposed technology onto the Shor’s period‐finding algorithm.

This paper presents a dynamic discrete bit-loading algorithm for multicarrier pDSL communication links that utilize the indoor power line network. In order to confront the time varying behavior of power line transmission media, the proposed algorithm provides fast adaptive bit and power loading with reduced complexity using channel state information and a subchannel link-allocation profile. Numerical results based on simulated network loading scenarios demonstrate the performance and the complexity of the proposed method.

The pDSL technology is used for providing multiple, high-speed broadband links over power lines in the indoor environment This work addresses the problem of bandwidth allocation between the various links of a pDSL network and proposes an algorithm for determining the allocation of the various subchannels during network activation and periodically during the normal network operation. Wireless network communities face a number of difficulties due to lack of integration between network and community resources management. In this work, we present a novel solution and we outline the architecture, design and implementation of an intelligent Web based management system for metropolitan area wireless network communities. The system supports multi-user and personalization features combined with wireless node configuration and monitoring, in a portal-like environment. Additionally to the software discussed, a test-bed implementation is presented to confirm platform and software robustness and cost-effectiveness of the proposed solutions. The overall environment is already operational for two years, while user and administrators' feedback has been incorporated into the system in a regular manner. Evaluation of the work has been performed in the online wireless network environment by computer and communication engineers and it strongly indicates that the proposed mechanism is both effective and efficient. Finally, future steps and enhancements are discussed.

In this paper, we present an integrated system architecture for metacomputing on top of distributed scientific resources via semantic-driven information management. Our approach is to consider both data and programs as objects of an application-specific ontology, describing them via corresponding metadata schemata that can be exploited to search for and to generate information in an efficient and automated way. Metacomputations are expressed in the form of workflows thereby enabling a flexible combination of data and program objects that can reside on different servers or grid resources. Workflow descriptions are associated with ontology concepts and can be activated as a side-effect of searching for information to produce new data on demand. We also report on the current status of an implementation that provides support for several aspects of this architecture.

A multiobjective stochastic optimization technique is presented for the design of antenna arrays with given radiation pattern specifications. The technique utilizes the method of genetic algorithms and the proper objective functions are selected for the optimized array design. The technique has been implemented for the case where the arrays consist of vertical dipoles. The parameters of the GA include the elements positions, the array voltage excitation coefficients (amplitude and phase) and the radius and length of the dipoles. The array elements can either be arbitrarily placed, forming a non-uniform configuration or they can arange a circular, uniform, dual band array. In the latter case, the array and dipole characteristics are optimized by the GA for dual band operation, while different current coefficients have to be evaluated for each frequency. The presented results demonstrate the effectiveness, the versatility and applicability of the proposed technique.

This paper briefly discusses the motivating factors that led to formation of an active collaborative group of engineering and education faculty at Virginia Tech. This group is actively pursuing a number of engineering education research activities and has been successful in winning two grants from the NSF in first 12 months of their collaborative efforts. These collaborative activities are targeted at improving engineering pedagogy at Virginia Tech and began with a planning grant from the NSF in September 2003. A 15-month Masters/Licensure program has been developed specifically for licensing engineering graduates in technology Education. A number of assessment activities have been initiated for analyzing curricular changes beginning with the freshman-engineering program. Use of electronic portfolio in engineering instruction is being explored. The curricula of freshman engineering and bioprocess engineering are being reformulated using a theme based spiral curriculum approach, which is part of a major research grant, under the department-level reform program of the NSF, that began in September '04. The interdisciplinary group has developed/ is working on a number of research proposals for expanding the scope of ongoing studies. The information presented should be very useful for new engineering educators who are exploring similar collaborative ventures elsewhere.
