The routing algorithms for multimedia communication should use for routing more than one QoS parameter. This is because new services such as video on demand and remote meeting systems require better QoS. However, the problem of QoS routing is difficult and to find a feasible route with two independent path constraints is NP-complete. Also, QoS routing algorithms for broadband networks must be adaptive, flexible, and intelligent for efficient network management. In this paper, we propose a multipurpose optimization method for QoS routing based on Genetic Algorithm (GA). The simulation results show that proposed method has a good performance and is a promising method for QoS routing.

A novel equalization schemes based on parametric channel estimation is presented. The proposed scheme is appropriate for channels with long and sparse impulse response such as encountered in high definition digital video transmission systems. The main trait of the channel estimation part is that instead of seeking the whole channel impulse response (CIR), only the unknown time delays and attenuation factors of the physical channel multipath components are efficiently estimated. The equalization part comprises an adaptive decision feedback equalizer (DFE), whose initialization part is properly designed for sparse channels. The information needed in the initialization part is provided by the channel estimation part. The DFE converges much faster compared to the conventional DFE and the whole scheme utilizes a very short training sequence and hence a significant saving in bandwidth is achieved.

Spatial and temporal database systems, both in theory and in practice, have developed dramatically over the past two decades to the point where usable commercial systems, underpinned by a robust theoretical foundation, are now starting to appear. While much remains to be done, topics for research must be chosen carefully to avoid embarking on impractical or unprofitable areas. This is particularly true for doctoral research where the candidate must build a tangible contribution in a relatively short time. The panel session at the Eighth International Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases (SSTD 2003) held on Santorini Island, Greece [7] in July 2003 thus took as its focus the question What to focus on (and what to avoid) in Spatial and Temporal Databases : recommendations for doctoral research. This short paper, authored by the panel members, summarizes these discussions.

Hypermedia systems and more specifically open hypermedia systems (OHS) provide a rich set of implementations of different hypertext flavors such as navigational hypertext, spatial hypertext or taxonomic hypertext. Additionally, these systems offer component-based modular architectures and address interoperability between hypertext domains. Despite multiple efforts of integrating Web clients, a widespread adoption of OHS technology by Web developers has not taken place. In this paper it is argued that Web Services - which offer a component model for Web applications - can be integrated in OHSs. An architectural integration is proposed, a step-by-step process is outlined and an example of integration is provided. This very approach is aimed to benefit both worlds: the Web community with new rich hypermedia functionality that extends the current navigational hypermedia, and the OHS community by opening its tools and platforms to the many developer groups of the Web community.

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a VRML97 multi-user layer, which is introduced in the EVE distributed virtual reality platform. Main consideration of our multi-user extension is the ease of transforming single-user virtual worlds to multi-user virtual worlds, as well as the conformity with any standard VRML97 browser. Furthermore, we present the EVE's communication platform, which can be used in order to support Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs). Main issues regarding the effective network communication as well as the initialization of the 3D scene are discussed in this paper.

The wide expansion and increasing demand for networked virtual environments resulted in efforts for the optimization of these environments with the enhancement of advanced features, which offered extended functionality and created an improved sense of realism. However, the added functionality often creates resource overhead both in the system as well as in the network host, which results in performance reduction. This paper presents such a networked virtual environment and based on the system's architecture tries to trace down with the time and recourse consuming parameters and proposes models on which a networked virtual environment, like the one presented, could achieve optimization of its performance.
