We discuss a new generic optimal controller structure for raw material blending in the cement industry. We focus on an important phase of the proportioning-burning-grinding operation triplet that essentially determines the cement quality; namely, the composition control of the raw mill system. We begin by describing the application of a generic optimal controller structure to this important phase, followed by a discussion of the control engineering background and the design of the realized controller. Finally, the control algorithm is discussed in a technology-independent manner.

Smart dust is a set of a vast number of ultra-small fully autonomous computing and communication devices, with very restricted energy and computing capabilities, that co-operate to quickly and efficiently accomplish a large sensing task. Smart dust can be very useful in practice i.e. in the local detection of a remote crucial event and the propagation of data reporting its realization. In this work we continue our effort towards the research on smart dust from a basic algorithmic point of view. Under a simple but realistic model for smart dust we present an interesting problem, which is how to propagate efficiently information on an event detected locally. Then we present anew smart dust protocol, which we call the "Sleep-Awake" protocol, for information propagation that explicitly uses the energy saving features (i.e. the alteration of sleeping and awake time periods) of the smart dust particles. By using both some simple probabilistic analysis and extensive experiments, we provide some first concrete results for the success probability and the time and energy efficiency of the protocol, in terms of parameters of the smart dust network. We note that the study of the interplay of these parameters allows us to program the smart dust network characteristics accordingly.

Undoubtedly, video-on-demand technology will play a catalytic role in future entertainment and e-learning systems. The key challenge in VoD domain is to provide interactive services in thousands of potential users at a reasonable cost. We present a scalable, high performance, high availability and low cost VoD system design, based on a cluster of personal computer. The scalability of this design is not restricted to cluster-level, but it can easily be applied to a greater MAN-level. The experimental measurements indicated that our design can support simultaneously 90, 170 or 240 high quality video streams for implementations with 1, 2 or 3 server nodes respectively. We show, using queuing theory analysis that these figures correspond to thousands of real users. We also present a multicast method that further enriches our design increasing its reliability in periods of high demand.

In this paper we describe the methodology and architecture of a flexible modular environment for prototyping data transmission systems and its application on xDSL systems. The development environment is based on custom and commercially available software tools and a custom hardware emulation platform for mapping the basic data-pump modules of xDSL systems into hardware/software functional modules. The road-map from a high-level xDSL system model to the actual prototype is based on the progressive substitution of high-level submodules of the initial model with their respective hardware/software counterparts, and their integration into a complete functional system. A library of custom blocks is used for data exchange and synchronization between the high-level model and the emulation platform, and for real-time visualization of the critical parameters of the emulated system as well. The application of the proposed development environment in the implementation and testing of an emulator of a bundle of DSL lines and of a centralized bit-loading algorithm for multicarrier ADSL systems is also described.

In this contribution, a genetic programming based technique, which combines the ability of genetic programming to explore both automatically and effectively, the whole set of candidate model structures and the robustness of evolutionary multimodel partitioning filters, is presented. The method is applied to the nonlinear system identification problem of complex biomedical data. Simulation results show that the algorithm identifies the true model and the true values of the unknown parameters for each different model structure, thus assisting the genetic programming technique to converge more quickly to the (near) optimal model structure. The method has all the known advantages of the evolutionary multimodel partitioning filters, that is, it is not restricted to the Gaussian case, it is applicable to online/adaptive operation and is computationally efficient. Furthermore, it can be realized in a parallel processing fashion, a fact, which makes it amenable to VLSI implementation.
