Interactive multimedia documents are rapidly becoming available on the WWW. Navigating in such large document repositories requires flexible retrieval techniques based on spatiotemporal structure. In this paper we address this issue by extending the notion of conceptual neighborhood (a concept describing similarity among relations between time intervals) to various resolution levels and higher dimensions. We propose a binary string encoding of relations which allows the automatic derivation of similarity measures and apply our framework for effective support of multimedia queries. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

This paper discusses how a backup virtual path (VP) between each pair of a source node and a destination node is set up such that when some nodes and links in primary VP's fail, primary VP's are changed to backup VP's rapidly. Then, this paper proposes a multiagent-based method for such rapid restoration from primary VP's to backup VP's. The proposed method consists of the following three steps. The first step enumerates candidates of backup VP between each pair of a source node and a destination node. In the second step, capacities of shared links in backup VP candidates between different pairs of a source node and a destination node are obtained. The last step determines a backup VP with the minimum capacities of shared links between each pair of a source node and a destination node. The proposed method has potentially good adaptability for change of both network resource such as topology and link capacity and resource requirements such as capacities of primary VP and backup VP.

This document1 contains definitions of a wide range of concepts specific to and widely used within temporal databases. In addition to providing definitions, the document also includes explanations of concepts as well as discussions of the adopted names. The consensus effort that lead to this glossary was initiated in Early 1992. Earlier versions appeared in SIGMOD Record in September 1992 and March 1994. The present glossary subsumes all the previous documents. The glossary meets the need for creating a higher degree of consensus on the definition and naming of temporal database concepts. Two sets of criteria are included. First, all included concepts were required to satisfy four relevance criteria, and, second, the naming of the concepts was resolved using a set of evaluation criteria. The concepts are grouped into three categories: concepts of general database interest, of temporal database interest, and of specialized interest. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

A consortium of three main sites consisting of the Center for Earth Observing and Space research (CEOSR) at George Mason University (GMU), the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA) and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GDAAC) has been formed. This consortium was recently funded by NASA's Earth Science Information Partner program to provide data and information products serving the needs of seasonal to interannual (S-I) scientists and other related science communities. Specifically, CEOSR will provide information technology and a distributed system architecture as wall as specific data products to be accessed by the scientific communities, COLA will provide scientific direction and a widely-used tool in the S-I research communities and GDAAC data management and archiving. Along with several other contributors, our consortium will create an interdisciplinary source of data for S-I researchers to expand the usage and usefulness of NASA data and serve as broker on behalf of the S-I researchers by providing them enhanced access to NASA's data. The consortium under guidance by an advisory board of experts will select the most appropriate data from the DAAC, NOAA, COLA and the University of Delaware for S-I research applications. Metadata and summary statistics will be extracted and stored in databases at distributed nodes, while the data will be stored on an advanced array of disks. There will be a JAVA-based WWW user interface featuring three advances: (1) content-based searching of the summary metadata (2) exploratory analysis of on-line data and (3) phenomenon-based searching. The consortium will be responsive to the changing needs of its science users as well as in tune with significant information technology advances.

The World Wide Web (WWW) provides a common framework for information exchange between different people. Everyone "publishes" texts, images, animation and video over the WWW, since it provides a cost-efficient way to disseminate knowledge and technology transfer. All this digital multimedia data can be duplicated without any loss of quality. The copy is identical to the master and the process of copying does not affect the quality of the master itself. With the increasing popularity of the Internet, especially with the hypertext based WWW, the possibility for everyone to access multimedia data has increased. Authors (that is developers or producers of digital data) should have a way to protect the intellectual property rights of their products. Image processing techniques have been presented in order to mark or "stamp" a digital product with the authors signatures. This paper introduces the current research solutions in the field of watermarking techniques, emphasizing three promising algorithms and a protocol for multimedia protection.

Investigates a novel approach to image structure segmentation based on detecting the critical image edges by formulating the problem as a classification task. The main goal of such a research effort is to better identify abrupt image changes without increasing the presence of noise in the resulting image. The suggested methodology is based on the discrete 2D wavelet transform applied to the original image in an attempt to extract more informative features for facilitating the decision-making process subsequently involved. This process is considered as a classification procedure employing supervised training techniques and, more specifically, multivariate stepwise discriminant analysis. The feasibility of this novel proposed approach is preliminarily studied by applying it to the image structure segmentation problem of a brain slice MRI image.

Seamless collaboration and medical information exchange among health care experts is an open question on existing health care systems. The patient record is usually scattered all over the health care network making access to crucial medical information troublesome. The Star* (Seamless Telematics Across Regions) project provides a set of solutions towards this direction which will soon be applied at Crete. A critical issue in understanding high speed flows is the study of shock waves. The paper summarizes our research on techniques for the detection and visualization of shock waves occuring in simulations of three dimensional flows on unstructured grids. Detection algorithms based on Mach number, density gradient and directional derivatives are compared using a data set from calculations of a transonic flow with a weak double shock around an airfoil. Both surface and volume rendering techniques are used to display the shocks. The issues in this research area are very much like those occurring in medical imaging. Since the data themselves (in this case the results of the fluid dynamics simulation) are intrinsically low resolution and noisy, properly extracting and visualizing the shock is very difficult. In this environment, blurry, low resolution techniques, like the splatting volume rendering, seem to do rather well. More complex schemes, using sophisticated numerical shock detectors coupled with polygon rendering, produce visually sharper shocks, but also introduce "graphics artifacts," which complicate understanding of the flow physics. On the other hand, visualization results produced with techniques like splatting are, in effect, relying more on the human visual system to compensate for limited resolution in the simulation.
