The eye is the prime sensory organ in physiology, and the abnormality in the eye severely influences the vision system. Therefore, eye irregularity is commonly assessed using imaging schemes, and Fundus Retinal Image (FRI) supported eye screening is one of the ophthalmological practices. This work proposed a Deep-Learning Procedure (DLP) to recognize Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) in FI. The proposed work presents the experimental work with different DLP methods found in the literature. This work is executed with two modes;(i) DR detection using conventional deep-features and (ii) DR discovery using deep ensemble features. To demonstrate this work, 1800 fundus images (900 regular and 900 DR class) are considered for the assessment, and the advantage of proposed plan is confirmed using various performance metrics. The experimental outcome of this study confirms that the AlexNet-based detection provides a better detection (>96%), and the deep ensemble features of AlexNet, VGG16, and ResNet18 provide a detection accuracy of >98% on the chosen FRI database. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.. Cloud storage services offer flexible, convenient solutions for business and personal users to store data. Traditionally, Third Party Auditors (TPAs) are introduced to ensure data integrity for public auditing. However, TPAs may also be untrusted for forging the auditing results or colluding with cloud storage servers to deceive users. In this paper, we propose a novel Blockchain-based Public Auditing Outsourcing system without TPAs (BPAO), in which the computationally expensive operations in public auditing are outsourced through blockchain to the cloud servers without risking users' privacy. Our security analysis indicates that BPAO achieves soundness and robustness. The experimental results show that BPAO is computationally efficient for cloud storage user. © 2021 IEEE.

Long-term Wind Power Forecasting with Hierarchical Spatial-Temporal Transformer

Wind power is attracting increasing attention around the world due to its renewable, pollution-free, and other advantages. However, safely and stably integrating the high permeability intermittent power energy into electric power systems remains challenging. Accurate wind power forecasting (WPF) can effectively reduce power fluctuations in power system operations. Existing methods are mainly designed for short-term predictions and lack effective spatial-temporal feature augmentation. In this work, we propose a novel end-to-end wind power forecasting model named Hierarchical Spatial-Temporal Transformer Network (HSTTN) to address the long-term WPF problems. Specifically, we construct an hourglass-shaped encoder-decoder framework with skip-connections to jointly model representations aggregated in hierarchical temporal scales, which benefits long-term forecasting. Based on this framework, we capture the inter-scale long-range temporal dependencies and global spatial correlations with two parallel Transformer skeletons and strengthen the intra-scale connections with downsampling and upsampling operations. Moreover, the complementary information from spatial and temporal features is fused and propagated in each other via Contextual Fusion Blocks (CFBs) to promote the prediction further. Extensive experimental results on two large-scale real-world datasets demonstrate the superior performance of our HSTTN over existing solutions. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Channel Estimation for RIS-aided mmWave Massive MIMO System Using Few-bit ADCs

Millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (massive MIMO) is one of the most promising technologies for the fifth generation and beyond wireless communication system. However, a large number of antennas incur high power consumption and hardware costs, and high-frequency communications place a heavy burden on the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) at the base station (BS). Furthermore, it is too costly to equipping each antenna with a high-precision ADC in a large antenna array system. It is promising to adopt low-resolution ADCs to address this problem. In this paper, we investigate the cascaded channel estimation for a mmWave massive MIMO system aided by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with the BS equipped with few-bit ADCs. Due to the low-rank property of the cascaded channel, the estimation of the cascaded channel can be formulated as a low-rank matrix completion problem. We introduce a Bayesian optimal estimation framework for estimating the user-RIS-BS cascaded channel to tackle with the information loss caused by quantization. To implement the estimator and achieve the matrix completion, we use efficient bilinear generalized approximate message passing (BiG-AMP) algorithm. Extensive simulation results verify that our proposed method can accurately estimate the cascaded channel for the RIS-aided mmWave massive MIMO system with low-resolution ADCs. This study proposes a comprehensive MedTech product innovation development framework tailored for university research commercialization within emerging markets. The MediGate framework, built on the Augmented Stage-Gate model, addresses the unique challenges of MedTech innovation, including regulatory compliance, stakeholder engagement, and market dynamics. The framework integrates critical decision-making criteria for different types of inventions to drive academic research toward commercialization in clinical settings. Through detailed case studies, including innovations like albumin strip test, 3D-printed patient-specific implant, COVID-19 nasal spray, and AI platform for depression detection, and iterative refinement, the framework provides actionable guidelines for navigating the complexities of product development. These guidelines ensure alignment with clinical needs, regulatory requirements, and market strategies. The research highlights the importance of early-stage valuation, reimbursement strategies, legal and IP considerations, and manufacturing and quality management. By offering a structured pathway, this research contributes to the theoretical and practical understanding of MedTech commercialization, aiming to enhance innovation success and healthcare impact in emerging markets. © The Author(s) 2024.

The Software engineering (SE) community has been embracing the open science policy and encouraging researchers to disclose artifacts in their publications. However, the status and trends of artifact practice and quality remain unclear, lacking insights on further improvement. In this paper, we present an empirical study to characterize the research artifacts in SE publications. Specifically, we manually collect 1,487 artifacts from all 2,196 papers published in top-tier SE conferences (ASE, FSE, ICSE, and ISSTA) from 2017 to 2022. We investigate the common practices (e.g., URL location and format, storage websites), maintenance activities (e.g., last update time and URL validity), popularity (e.g., the number of stars on GitHub and characteristics), and quality (e.g., documentation and code smell) of these artifacts. Based on our analysis, we reveal a rise in publications providing artifacts. The usage of Zenodo for sharing artifacts has significantly increased. However, artifacts stored in GitHub tend to receive few stars, indicating a limited influence on real-world SE applications. We summarize the results and provide suggestions to different stakeholders in conjunction with current guidelines. © 2024, CC BY.

The influence of intrinsic defects of 1T-TaS_(2)on charge density waves(CDWs)is studied using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy(STM,STS),angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy(ARPES),and density functional theory(DFT).We identify several types of structural defects and find that most have a local character limited to a single CDW site,with a single exception which effectively behaves as a dopant,leading to band-bending and affecting multiple neighboring *** only one type of defect can be observed by STM topographic imaging,all defects are easily resolved in STS *** results indicate modulation of the Mott band gap commensurate with the CDW and breaking of the three-fold symmetry of electronic *** calculations(with included Coulomb interactions)are used to investigate the electronic structure,focusing on both sulfur vacancy and oxygen-sulfur *** sulfur vacancy system,characterized with a metallic behavior,is identified as the origin of one of the experimentally observed ***,the effect of oxidation of 1T-TaS_(2)depends on the substitution site,leading to the heterogeneity of electronic properties.

Social media is a growing field, mostly everyone is availing the benefits of it. It seems that overuse of this technology may cripple academic standards of our next generations. Nevertheless research studies in this direction is limited, and recent information systems scholars has warranted more research in this direction. The motive of this study is to explore how excessive social media use affects students' academic performance and come up with a suggestion to reduce social media usage and increase educational learning of an individual. Using primary data collected from Pakistani university students, 265 entries were analyzed using SPSS tool. Findings suggest that usage of social networking sites has a significant result on undue use of social media. Furthermore, results also indicated that unwarranted use of social media has a detrimental effect on learning performance. Results also supported the idea that student technology self-efficacy diminishes the undesirable association between excessive social media use and academic performance.

The study of information revivals, witnessing the violation of certain data-processing inequalities, has provided an important paradigm in the study of non-Markovian quantum stochastic processes. Although often used interchangeably, we argue here that the notions of “revivals” and “backflows,” i.e., flows of information from the environment back into the system, are distinct: an information revival can occur without any backflow ever taking place. In this paper, we examine in detail the phenomenon of noncausal revivals and relate them to the theory of short Markov chains and squashed non-Markovianity. We also provide an operational condition, in terms of system-only degrees of freedom, to witness the presence of genuine backflow that cannot be explained by noncausal revivals. As a byproduct, we demonstrate that focusing on processes with genuine backflows, while excluding those with only noncausal revivals, resolves the issue of nonconvexity of Markovianity, thus enabling the construction of a convex resource theory of genuine quantum non-Markovianity.

Multi-segment Soft Robot Control via Deep Koopman-based Model Predictive Control

Soft robots, compared to regular rigid robots, as their multiple segments with soft materials bring flexibility and compliance, have the advantages of safe interaction and dexterous operation in the environment. However, due to its characteristics of high dimensional, nonlinearity, time-varying nature, and infinite degree of freedom, it has been challenges in achieving precise and dynamic control such as trajectory tracking and position reaching. To address these challenges, we propose a framework of Deep Koopman-based Model Predictive Control (DK-MPC) for handling multi-segment soft robots. We first employ a deep learning approach with sampling data to approximate the Koopman operator, which therefore linearizes the high-dimensional nonlinear dynamics of the soft robots into a finite-dimensional linear representation. Secondly, this linearized model is utilized within a model predictive control framework to compute optimal control inputs that minimize the tracking error between the desired and actual state trajectories. The real-world experiments on the soft robot "Chordata" demonstrate that DK-MPC could achieve high-precision control, showing the potential of DK-MPC for future applications to soft robots.
