Throughput and interference measurements in copper wires of xDSL type modems

Crosstalk is an important factor that needs to be considered and study its effects in copper wires, especially when voice communication takes place. Its presence has proven to be an impaired factor in the performance of communication services. This paper measures the isolation losses and the crosstalk losses as a function of the frequency and the length of the copper wires. It also presents throughput results from modems designed in the context of an EU financed project that can provide a symmetric 100 Mbps over two pairs for reach up to 500m (5 times the existing reach of 100-BASE-T systems).

The increasing demand for wireless broadband service offering in long distances is the major drive behind the emergence of the WiMAX technology. WiMAX is targeted to providing high bit data rates to the end users in a wireless manner, any time, in any location, even in harsh environmental conditions and at an acceptable quality. This paper presents the experimental results of a WiMAX system that follows the specifications of IEEE 802.16-2004 standard. Throughput and Bit Error Rate (BER) measurements, as well as voice and video service experiments are carried out, leading to useful conclusions for the performance evaluation of the WiMAX system under test and the WiMAX technology in general.

Nocturnal hypoglycaemia has been implicated in the sudden deaths of young people with diabetes. Experimental hypoglycaemia has been found to prolong the ventricular repolarisation and to affect the T wave morphology. It is postulated that abnormally low blood glucose could in certain circumstances, be responsible for the development of a fatal cardiac arrhythmia. We have designed a monitoring and alarm system for detection of the onset of spontaneous nocturnal hypoglycaemia through monitoring of the electrocardiogram. The system incorporates expert-knowledge in the form of a rule-base. It performs monitoring of two ECG features and raises alarms if abnormalities are detected corresponding to hypoglycaemia. The top performance of the system is 100% and 91.30% for sensitivity and specificity respectively. This study supports the hypothesis proposing a relationship between cardiac function and abnormally low blood glucose.

This paper will discuss a method for presenting a surveillance image captured by an active camera such as one that actively tracks a moving subject as an image that is easily understood by an observer. Active camera surveillance images generally have a narrow field of view, and changes in the line-of-sight direction of an automatic camera make it difficult for an observer to intuitively understand the scene. However, enhancement of the observer's ability to comprehend the scene can be anticipated by adding a wide-angle panoramic image to the periphery of the narrow-field observed image and presenting it as an image that has a wider field of view. In order for an observer to understand conditions in a remote location, the observed image and the panoramic image must be integrated with geometric/photometric consistency. The present paper will discuss a method of geometric integration using a fixed-viewpoint camera, and a method of photometric integration by modeling of brightness variation by eigenimage analysis. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The main objective of the paper is to introduce how the concept of tensor HOSVD can be carried over to the TP (tensor product) dynamic models, namely, how we can define and generate the "HOSVD like" decomposition of linear parameter varying (LPV) dynamic models. We term this decomposition as HOSVD based canonical form of TP model or polytopic model form. The key idea and the basic concept of this decomposition was proposed with the TP model transformation based control design methodology. The novelty of this paper is to present the mathematical background of this concept. The paper shows convergency theorems how the TP model transformation is capable of reconstructing this HOSVD based canonical form numerically. The proofs of the theorems are lengthy, therefore they are omitted. The paper also presents numerical examples to show the applicability, efficiency and uniformity of the numerical reconstruction

A generic two degree of freedom controller introduced for linear plants is extended for nonlinear processes. The nonlinear controller consists of two parts: the first depending on the design parameters and the invariant part of the process, the second only on the model of the plant. A simple iterative controller refinement scheme is constructed. The efficiency of this scheme is presented by simulation examples.

Practical experience is an important component of the educational process. However, the time and economical resources often required for the setting up and construction of scientific laboratories is outside the scope of many institutions. A solution to this problem could be found in the adaptation of the Virtual Reality technology, which could allow the creation of Virtual Laboratories, which will simulate the processes and actions that could take place in real laboratories. In particular, this paper, based on the expertise and motivation gained by the VirRAD-IST project, proposes and describes such an educational virtual laboratory, which aims to meet the requirements of a teal laboratory and furthermore to support communication and collaboration services. We propose a web-based system, which allows users to perform experiments on educational fields, such as Physics or Chemistry in 3D multi-user worlds where users are represented by avatars and they are offered a wide range of communication and collaboration services in. order to simulate efficiently a real learning experimental process.

Ferroelectric materials have been gaining much interest over the last decades due to the unique operational characteristics they demonstrate, when a dc electric field is applied. This paper investigates the scattering analysis of electromagnetic waves from materials with high permittivity that follows a linear spatial variation along one axis. The surface integral equation (SIE) and volume integral equation (VIE) methods are invoked to compute the currents and the radar cross section (RCS). The number of unknowns for the VIE is, as expected, larger than for the SIE method. The RCS and the induced current are associated in such a way that one can approximate the linear variation with relatively few elements (unknowns).

In this paper we survey the most well known and widely used indexing structures for handling spatial information using both main memory and secondary media. We focus on the presentation of spatial object indexing structures and then we cite a number of applications that they can be used. We have paid attention to the variety of queries that each of these structures can answer and their price in computational time and memory space occupation.
