Thepaper proposes a novel method for content-based search in a database of VRML 3D models. The proposed technique is based on a querying-by-3D-model approach. A set of shape-based descriptors are extracted from the reference 3D model and compared to the corresponding descriptors of the VRML models contained in the database. The descriptors used vary from simple geometric measurements such as the aspect ratio or a binary 3D shape mask to more complex and sophisticated shape-based criteria such as the edge paths of each 3D model. Similarity measures are then introduced for the specific descriptors and introduced into a 3D model-matching algorithm. Experimental results are presented, evaluating the performance of the proposed method.

The Integrated Electronic Health Record (I-EHR) is a term used to describe the whole set of information that exists in electronic form and is related to the personal health of an individual. Any approach towards I-EHR focuses on the needs of professionals or citizens who want a uniform way of accessing parts of personal health record information that is physically located in disparate information sources. Any I-EHR end-user environment must provide fast, secure and authorized access to the distributed fragments of the electronic patient record (EPR) originating at multiple clinical information systems, and to deliver them in a multitude of formats. The importance of such an environment becomes apparent when used in conjunction with a number of advanced telematic services, such as medical collaboration, home care monitoring, and/or health emergency services, to provide seamless care without visible organizational boundaries.

Healthcare is usually delivered within certain organizational boundaries and information produced at each site is managed by isolated autonomous clinical information systems. In some cases point-to-point communication is enabled, facilitating the exchange of information. In contrast, integrated regional health telematics; networks enable accessibility to information and services without visible organizational boundaries, to provide decentralized healthcare through integrated services for seamless and personalized information delivery. This has the advantage that enables informed citizens to have an impact on the healthcare system and to be more concerned and care for their own health. The current vision comprises affordable access to healthcare resources and services for all citizens, thus making medical expertise a shared resource wherever and whenever needed. Important areas in which information society technologies are likely to have a significant impact include those of pre-hospital health emergencies, remote monitoring of patients with chronic conditions, and medical collaboration through sharing of health-related information resources. Accessibility to these and other media-rich, user-oriented. services, in the context of the emerging global information society, will be supported by a healthcare information infrastructure, which can achieve effective horizontal integration of networked information sources.

The paper presents a method for the 3D visualization of the structure of radial basis function networks using traditional and novel methods of dimensionality reduction. This method allows the visualization of basis function characteristics (centers and widths) along with second level weights. To facilitate the interpretation of a wide variety of high dimensional problems, several forms of projections into 20 or 30 spaces can be used interactively. In this paper we present a Web-based, database oriented CSCW system to support information dispersal between different Local Government authorities (Region, Prefecture and Municipalities) and the citizens. The system is implemented around the `shared workspace' notion, a group of directories and files controlled by the users of the workspace. Intranet and Extranet technologies are exploited to enable asynchronous and synchronous co-operation, manipulation of information from heterogeneous sources, security and easy administration, providing in parallel advanced communication facilities. We propose an innovative approach for the development of shared workspaces over WWW, based on state-of-the-art software platforms, integrating WWW and database technologies. The whole system was developed under a project funded by the Greek General Secretariat of research and technology and aims in the efficient distribution and management of information between and within different types of local authorities (Municipalities, Prefectures).

Piecewise-linear (PWL) neural networks are networks with piecewise-linear node functions. They have attractive features, such as speed of training and amenability to digital VISI implementation. The paper presents an algorithm for training PWL networks. The algorithm is general in that it can be used for the optimization of general PWL functions. It is based on moving from one linear region to the next. This is achieved by exploring 2N specific directions along the boundaries between the linear regions (N is the dimension), and moving along the direction that achieves a descent in the objective function. Convergence to the local minimum is proved, and simulation results confirm the computational efficiency of the algorithm.
