In this paper, the analysis model of a composite electromagnetic interference environment is proposed, and the composite interference consists of three types, i.e., impulse, sinusoidal, and rectangular type. We have derived the p.d.f of the amplitude of the composite interference. And then we have evaluated the performance of a 16QAM system in a composite interference environment. From the results, it is known that when the impulse type interference is weaker than the others, the shape of the p.d.f is dominantly governed by the power component ratio of sinusoidal and rectangular type interference. On the other hand, when the impulse type interference is stronger, the effect of the other two interferences becomes insignificant. Also, it is shown that the smaller both the impulsive index (A) and the mean power component ratio (/spl Gamma/') in impulse type interference are, the worse the performance of the 16QAM system is.

The need for specifying and managing commitments is supported by many elements in software development, such as project plans tracking systems, and process reviews. Commitment structure in organizations are so large, distributed, and complex that it can be coped with only via appropriate environments and tools. This paper proposes a distributed tool with its notation for commitment specification and management. Distributed Commitment Management Tool (DCMT) enables every single software developer to specify her commitments while modelling her own process in cooperation with others, and to manage her commitments based on the knowledge obtained via this modelling. The findings of the DCMT constitute valuable information not only for detecting and resolving unmet commitments and also for providing basic project management items, such as work breakdown structure, to-do-lists, and expect lists.

A dual rail circuits synthesis environment for the implementation of multiple output boolean functions

This paper presents an integrated CAD system for synthesizing high-performance dual rail circuits using DCVS logic. The proposed techniques exploit ROBDDs to provide efficient DCVS trees that fulfill the design rules and constraints. Sharing of common transistor structures is examined to decrease further the overall device count and chip area by improving the wirability of DCVS circuits. This is accomplished by generating a common variable ordering that permits identification of common subcircuits and simplification of routing procedures by enhancing straight-line wiring of input signals. The paper also presents the integration steps that are undertaken for importing the developed tools into Alliance CAD system, in order to provide a complete and consistent DCVS circuits synthesis environment and methodology. Moreover, experimental results showed that the proposed algorithms, which are time and memory efficient, produce near optimal device counts improving placement and routing procedures. The integrated design framework, which is available for academic and research purposes, has been employed to synthesize, simulate and layout a programmable 16-bit serial/parallel multiplier as a complete DCVS circuit synthesis example. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Interactive multimedia documents are rapidly becoming available on the WWW. Navigating in such large document repositories requires flexible retrieval techniques based on spatiotemporal structure. In this paper we address this issue by extending the notion of conceptual neighborhood (a concept describing similarity among relations between time intervals) to various resolution levels and higher dimensions. We propose a binary string encoding of relations which allows the automatic derivation of similarity measures and apply our framework for effective support of multimedia queries. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

This paper discusses how a backup virtual path (VP) between each pair of a source node and a destination node is set up such that when some nodes and links in primary VP's fail, primary VP's are changed to backup VP's rapidly. Then, this paper proposes a multiagent-based method for such rapid restoration from primary VP's to backup VP's. The proposed method consists of the following three steps. The first step enumerates candidates of backup VP between each pair of a source node and a destination node. In the second step, capacities of shared links in backup VP candidates between different pairs of a source node and a destination node are obtained. The last step determines a backup VP with the minimum capacities of shared links between each pair of a source node and a destination node. The proposed method has potentially good adaptability for change of both network resource such as topology and link capacity and resource requirements such as capacities of primary VP and backup VP.

This document1 contains definitions of a wide range of concepts specific to and widely used within temporal databases. In addition to providing definitions, the document also includes explanations of concepts as well as discussions of the adopted names. The consensus effort that lead to this glossary was initiated in Early 1992. Earlier versions appeared in SIGMOD Record in September 1992 and March 1994. The present glossary subsumes all the previous documents. The glossary meets the need for creating a higher degree of consensus on the definition and naming of temporal database concepts. Two sets of criteria are included. First, all included concepts were required to satisfy four relevance criteria, and, second, the naming of the concepts was resolved using a set of evaluation criteria. The concepts are grouped into three categories: concepts of general database interest, of temporal database interest, and of specialized interest. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

A consortium of three main sites consisting of the Center for Earth Observing and Space research (CEOSR) at George Mason University (GMU), the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA) and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GDAAC) has been formed. This consortium was recently funded by NASA's Earth Science Information Partner program to provide data and information products serving the needs of seasonal to interannual (S-I) scientists and other related science communities. Specifically, CEOSR will provide information technology and a distributed system architecture as wall as specific data products to be accessed by the scientific communities, COLA will provide scientific direction and a widely-used tool in the S-I research communities and GDAAC data management and archiving. Along with several other contributors, our consortium will create an interdisciplinary source of data for S-I researchers to expand the usage and usefulness of NASA data and serve as broker on behalf of the S-I researchers by providing them enhanced access to NASA's data. The consortium under guidance by an advisory board of experts will select the most appropriate data from the DAAC, NOAA, COLA and the University of Delaware for S-I research applications. Metadata and summary statistics will be extracted and stored in databases at distributed nodes, while the data will be stored on an advanced array of disks. There will be a JAVA-based WWW user interface featuring three advances: (1) content-based searching of the summary metadata (2) exploratory analysis of on-line data and (3) phenomenon-based searching. The consortium will be responsive to the changing needs of its science users as well as in tune with significant information technology advances.
