The World Wide Web (WWW) provides a common framework for information exchange between different people. Everyone "publishes" texts, images, animation and video over the WWW, since it provides a cost-efficient way to disseminate knowledge and technology transfer. All this digital multimedia data can be duplicated without any loss of quality. The copy is identical to the master and the process of copying does not affect the quality of the master itself. With the increasing popularity of the Internet, especially with the hypertext based WWW, the possibility for everyone to access multimedia data has increased. Authors (that is developers or producers of digital data) should have a way to protect the intellectual property rights of their products. Image processing techniques have been presented in order to mark or "stamp" a digital product with the authors signatures. This paper introduces the current research solutions in the field of watermarking techniques, emphasizing three promising algorithms and a protocol for multimedia protection.

Investigates a novel approach to image structure segmentation based on detecting the critical image edges by formulating the problem as a classification task. The main goal of such a research effort is to better identify abrupt image changes without increasing the presence of noise in the resulting image. The suggested methodology is based on the discrete 2D wavelet transform applied to the original image in an attempt to extract more informative features for facilitating the decision-making process subsequently involved. This process is considered as a classification procedure employing supervised training techniques and, more specifically, multivariate stepwise discriminant analysis. The feasibility of this novel proposed approach is preliminarily studied by applying it to the image structure segmentation problem of a brain slice MRI image.

Seamless collaboration and medical information exchange among health care experts is an open question on existing health care systems. The patient record is usually scattered all over the health care network making access to crucial medical information troublesome. The Star* (Seamless Telematics Across Regions) project provides a set of solutions towards this direction which will soon be applied at Crete. Initially two health care structures will be involved in the process but later on and after tests have been completed successfully in real world applications, results will be defused over the whole health care region of Crete. © 1997, The authors.

A critical issue in understanding high speed flows is the study of shock waves. The paper summarizes our research on techniques for the detection and visualization of shock waves occuring in simulations of three dimensional flows on unstructured grids. Detection algorithms based on Mach number, density gradient and directional derivatives are compared using a data set from calculations of a transonic flow with a weak double shock around an airfoil. Both surface and volume rendering techniques are used to display the shocks. The issues in this research area are very much like those occurring in medical imaging. Since the data themselves (in this case the results of the fluid dynamics simulation) are intrinsically low resolution and noisy, properly extracting and visualizing the shock is very difficult. In this environment, blurry, low resolution techniques, like the splatting volume rendering, seem to do rather well. More complex schemes, using sophisticated numerical shock detectors coupled with polygon rendering, produce visually sharper shocks, but also introduce "graphics artifacts," which complicate understanding of the flow physics. On the other hand, visualization results produced with techniques like splatting are, in effect, relying more on the human visual system to compensate for limited resolution in the simulation.

The authors present here a complete three-dimensional molecular model structure of the ternary complex (Enzyme-DNA-dNTP) of human immunodeficiency virus-type 1 reverse transcriptase (HIV-1 RT) using high performance computer simulation and molecular modeling techniques. The Ca coordinates of the crystal structure of HIV-1 RT-DNA binary complex as well as biochemical properties of a number of mutant enzymes were used as the basis to model build a prepolymerase ternary complex in which Mg/sup 2+/ ions are also accommodated. The side chains of amino acid residues interacting with the template and primer strands and those stabilizing the dNTP and Mg/sup 2+/ ions in the active site pocket are clearly elucidated in the model. The structural information provided by this model should be useful in understanding the polymerase reaction mechanisms and should permit structure based drug design against HIV-1 RT.

In 1979 he became an Associate Professor at Hokkaido University where he was promoted to Professor in 1987. He has been engaged in research on optical and wave electronics. In 1987 he received a Best Paper Award. He is the author ofFundamentals of Finite Element Method of Optics and Waves(Morigkata Publ.)Optical Waveguide Analysis(Asakura Publ.)Optical Waveguide Analysis(McGraw-Hill Book Co.) andOptical Waveguide Theory by the Finite Element Method(KTK Scientific Publishing/Kulwer Academic Publishers). He is also co-author of one book and has written chapters in six other books. He is a member of the Institute of Television Engineers of Japan the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan the Japan Society for Simulation Technology the Japan Society for Computational Methods in Engineering and the Japan Society of Applied Magnetics and Mechanics. He is also an IEEE Senior Member. Graduated in 1991 from me Department of Electronic Engineering Hokkaido University where he received his M.S. degree in 1993. He is currently in the doctoral program. He has been engaged in research on quantum wave phenomena and computer-aided design of optical and quantum effect devices.

To evaluate nonreciprocal mode conversion characteristics in a magnetooptic channel waveguide, a finite element analysis based on the scalar wave approximation is formulated for the first time. A simple iterative calculation method is conceived for solution of the nonlinear eigenvalue equations finally obtained in which the two polarizations are coupled. Specifically, the maximum isolation ratio in the mode-conversion-type magnetooptic rib guide was evaluated and the validity of the method is confirmed by comparison with published experimental results.

To the best of the knowledge of the authors, the formulation is carried out for the first time on the finite-element beam-propagation method for the analysis of the magnetooptic waveguide in which the structure varies along the propagation direction. The present method is applicable not only to the case in which refractive index difference is small but also to the case for the TE mode and the TM mode propagating in a waveguide with a large refractive index difference. To suppress the spurious reflection from the computational window edges, the transparent boundary condition is applied.

The goal of a fugitive-search game on a graph is to trap a fugitive that hides on the vertices of the graph by systematically placing searchers on the vertices. The fugitive is assumed to have complete knowledge of the graph and of the searchers' moves, but is restricted to move only along paths whose vertices are not guarded by searchers. The search number of the graph is the least number of searchers necessary to trap the fugitive. Variants of the fugitive-search game have been related to important graph parameters like treewidth and pathwidth. In this paper, we introduce a class of fugitive-search games where the searchers do not see the fugitive and the fugitive can only move just before a searcher is placed on the vertex it occupies. Letting the fugitive's speed (i.e. the maximum number of edges the fugitive can traverse at a single move) vary, we get different games. We show that if the speed of the fugitive is unbounded then the search number minus 1 is equal to the treewidth of the graph, while if the speed is 1 then the search number minus 1 is equal to the width, a polynomially computable graph parameter. We also show that in the above two cases, the search number remains the same even if we consider only these search strategies that at every step further restrict the fugitive's possible resorts (this monotonicity phenomenon is usually expressed as: "recontamination does not help"). Finally, we show that for any graph, if the length of any chordless cycle is bounded by a constant s (s≥3), then the treewidth of the graph plus 1 is equal to the search number for fugitive speed s−2. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1995.

In this paper, we investigate which processor networks allow k-label Interval Routing Schemes, under the assumption that costs of edges may vary. We show that for each fixed k ≥ 1, the class of graphs allowing such routing schemes is closed under minor-taking in the domain of connected graphs, and hence has a linear time recognition algorithm. This result connects the theory of compact routing with the theory of graph minors and treewidth. We also show that every graph that does not contain K2,r as a minor has treewidth at most 2r – 2. In case the graph is planar, this bound can be lowered to r + 2. As a consequence, graphs that allow k-label Interval Routing Schemes under dynamic cost edges have treewidth at most 4k, and treewidth at most 2k + 3 if they are planar. The performance of trellis coded and Reed-Solomon coded ARQ error control systems over slowly fading Rayleigh channels are compared and contrasted in this paper. First, a two-code CRC-TCM type-I hybrid-ARQ scheme based on separate error correction and error detection codes is compared to a one-code Reed-Solomon protocol in which retransmission requests are generated within the decoding process. The performance of the associated packet combining protocols is also compared. It is shown that for similar levels of complexity, a onecode Reed-Solomon approach offers both better throughput and reliability performance than the TCM schemes in almost all cases. © 1996, Kluwer academic Publishers.
