The paper proposes an interdisciplinary approach including methods from disciplines such as history of concepts, linguistics, natural language processing (NLP) and Semantic Web, to create a comparative framework for detecting semantic change in multilingual historical corpora and generating diachronic ontologies as linguistic linked open data (LLOD). Initiated as a use case (UC4.2.1) within the COST Action Nexus Linguarum, European network for Web-centred linguistic data science, the study will explore emerging trends in knowledge extraction, analysis and representation from linguistic data science, and apply the devised methodology to datasets in the humanities to trace the evolution of concepts from the domain of socio-cultural transformation. Pediatric medicine widely uses bone age determination to assess skeletal maturity and identify developmental disorders early. However, manual assessment methods are subjective and lack consistency. To address this, we suggest using image preprocessing to isolate vital areas in hand X-rays and enhance features. We then enhance the Inception-V4 model to extract features from these images, integrating gender as a crucial reference. Our model, validated on a large dataset, demonstrates superior bone age prediction compared to prior methods. These automated models offer precise and reliable tools for clinical assessments, showing significant potential for practical application. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Concerning the recent notion of circular chromatic number of signed graphs, for each given integer k we introduce two signed bipartite graphs, each on 2k2 − k + 1 vertices, having shortest negative cycle of length 2k, and the circular chromatic number 4. Each of the construction can be viewed as a bipartite analogue of the generalized Mycielski graphs on odd cycles, M(C2k+1). In the course of proving our result, we also obtain a simple proof of the fact that M(C2k+1) and some similar quadrangulations of the projective plane have circular chromatic number 4. These proofs have the advantage that they illuminate, in an elementary manner, the strong relation between algebraic topology and graph coloring problems. © 2023, CC BY.

Due to the broadcast nature of wireless transmissions, they are exposed to all surrounding entities and thus vulnerable to eavesdropping. To counter this vulnerability, we propose a new physical-layer secure transmission scheme, called DDM-Sec, based on decomposed and distributed modulation (DDM). DDM-Sec realizes traditional QPSK modulation by using two cooperative transmitters (Txs), each generating a BPSK signal, in a distributed manner. The legitimate receiver (Rx) can decode the desired/intended information from the mixed received signal while preventing the eavesdropper from accessing the legitimate user's information. DDM-Sec can effectively exploit the randomness of wireless channels to encrypt data transmission, enrich the spatial signatures of the legitimate transmission by employing two cooperative Txs. Moreover, DDM-Sec distributes user's information to two transmissions so that none of the decomposed signals alone carry the legitimate user's full information. Our theoretical analysis, hardware experiment, and simulation have shown that DDM-Sec can effectively prevent the eavesdropping, and hence guarantee the secrecy of the legitimate user's data transmission.

Optimal percolation concerns the identification of the minimum-cost strategy for the destruction of any extensive connected components in a network. Solutions of such a dismantling problem are important for the design of optimal strategies of disease containment based either on immunization or social distancing. Depending on the specific variant of the problem considered, network dismantling is performed via the removal of nodes or edges, and different cost functions are associated to the removal of these microscopic elements. In this paper, we show that network representations in geometric space can be used to solve several variants of the network dismantling problem in a coherent fashion. Once a network is embedded, dismantling is implemented using intuitive geometric strategies. We demonstrate that the approach well suits both Euclidean and hyperbolic network embeddings. Our systematic analysis on synthetic and real networks demonstrates that the performance of embedding-aided techniques is comparable to, if not better than, the one of the best dismantling algorithms currently available on the market.

With the widespread usage of smartphones, users not just using their smartphone for calls and messaging only, but they are using it for a variety of purposes such as banking transactions, e-mailing, chatting, online shopping, video conferencing, health monitoring, and many more. Most of these activities store personal and sensitive data of the user on the device, reaching this confidential information by unauthorized person may cause huge losses and bad consequences. Therefore, securing the smartphone’s accessibility from unauthorized people became an extremely essential. With the advanced development in the area of sensor-based smartphone authentication methods, different methods were developed to be easily used by users through specific criteria. However, many aspects haven’t been discovered yet in the area of sensor-based smartphone authentication methods. On the basis of that, this study aims to review the area of sensor-based smartphone authentication methods systematically to provide a comprehensive understanding of this new area and to discuss the current challenges and issues. To conduct this systematic review, four scientific digital databases were utilized; ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, and Scopus. The total number of studies found was n = 256 articles, only n = 46 articles were included based on our inclusion criteria. To provide a comprehensive understanding of the included studies, taxonomy was drawn. Also, this study provides a discussion on the current motivations, challenges and issues, and recommendations in sensor-based smartphone authentication methods. This review enlightens, encourage, and direct researchers to develop authentication solutions and reduce the current gaps in this area.

Towards the Information-Theoretic Limit of Programmable Photonics

The scalability of many programmable photonic circuits is limited by the 2π tuning range needed for the constituent phase shifters. To address this problem, we introduce the concept of a phase-efficient circuit architecture, where the average phase shift is 2π. We derive a universal information-theoretic limit to the phase-shift efficiency of universal multiport interferometers, and propose a "3-MZI" architecture that approaches this limit to within a factor of 2×, approximately a 10× reduction in average phase shift over the prior art, where the average phase shift scales inversely with system size as O(1/√N). For non-unitary circuits, we show that the 3-MZI saturates the theoretical bound for Gaussian-distributed target matrices. Using this architecture, we show optical neural network training with all phase shifters constrained to 0.2 radians without loss of accuracy. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This study explores the impact of outbound training on student engagement within management education. Outbound training fosters teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills and is increasingly incorporated into MBA programs to promote holistic student development. Previous research highlights the benefits of outdoor education in enhancing academic performance and various interpersonal skills. However, evidence demonstrating its effect on student engagement remains limited. This research addresses this gap by evaluating changes in student engagement levels before and after outbound training. The study employs an innovative computer vision-based method to impartially measure student engagement through facial expressions and head pose estimation. The results indicate a significant increase in engagement levels post-training, suggesting that outbound training effectively enhances student enthusiasm and participation in academic tasks. This study provides valuable insights for educators on the importance of integrating outbound training into management curricula and demonstrates the potential of advanced technologies in educational research.

Despite the numerous pompous statements regarding 5G, it is indisputable that 5G creates a radical shift in telecommunications. The main reason is that 5G is an enabler of numerous applications we have long envisioned and either simulated or implemented in test environments, partially or on a smaller scale. 5G will soon unlock the potential of smart cities, industry 4.0, and IoT, to name a few. However, a crucial question is how much we can trust this technology. Since this technology will soon become the core infrastructure for all of the above, it is critical to understand the fundamental security mechanisms that comprise this technology and the guarantees they provide to assess the potential risks we are exposed to. This work follows a non-technical yet bottom-up approach to introduce the reader to the core security mechanisms and establish a baseline for the security of 5G, to demystify the principal notions and processes. A hierarchical matrix is an approximated form of the dense matrix that represents the N-by-N correlations of N objects. The construction of the hierarchical matrix is achieved by dividing a matrix into submatrices (partitioning), followed by calculating these submatrices' entries (filling). The matrix partitioning is divided into two sub-steps: cluster tree (CT) construction by dividing objects into clusters, hierarchically, and block cluster tree (BCT) construction by observing all cluster pairs at the same level of the cluster tree that satisfy a given admissibility condition. We can apply task parallelism to filling by treating each submatrix as a parallelization unit. In existing implementations, the partitioning is redundantly executed on every computing node, and filling is executed in parallel by assigning a set of tasks to each worker statically. However, we cannot get good load balance using such implementations because it is difficult to predict the workload of each task precisely. In this paper, we propose a new parallel implementation of the hierarchical matrix construction, where a BCT construction is executed in parallel using all workers of all computing nodes. When a worker finds a BCT leaf during BCT construction, it executes filling for the submatrix corresponding to the leaf. To get good load balance, we parallelized the BCT construction using the task parallel language Tascell, which enables easy and efficient parallelization of tree recursive algorithms by employing a dynamic load balancing strategy. In numerical experiments with 3D electric field analyses using up to 16 computing nodes each of which has 36 cores, our implementation achieved up to 1.9-fold speedups compared to an implementation using the static task assignment strategy.
