A low-cost hybrid simulator for VLSI circuits has been under development at IIT Delhi. The simulator uses a Reconfigurable System (RS) consisting of a limited number of FPGAs for hardware emulation and blends the ideas of hardware emulation with conventional software simulation. A crucial preparatory step is to partition a given circuit into as few parts as possible. The parts are then downloaded onto the RS one by one and emulated in stand alone mode or in conjunction with software simulator. The hybrid simulation environment poses some unique requirements on the partitioner. This paper presents can efficient partitioning algorithm for this purpose. A study of performance of the algorithm on 92 benchmark circuits for various I/O and size constraints of FPGAs has been carried out and good results have been obtained.

The proliferation of personal communication networks and an increasing demand for multimedia communications stimulate the development of wireless multimedia networking. This paper considers integrated variable bit-rate video and data transmission over a wireless LAN which consists of a single base station and many terminals. The performance of a LAN with the TDD ALOHA-reservation MAC protocol is evaluated through simulation in the presence of transmission errors. Selective-repeat ARQ control is carried out over both video and data. Regarding video traffic, we also examine the applicability of a packet discard technique, which discards packets with elapsed time of more than a threshold value. The simulation results show that the ARQ is indispensable to video as well as data, while the packet discard technique is effective just for high bit-error rates at which only poor performance is achieved.

This paper addresses two issues of the building automation and control networks (BACnet) intended for industrial buildings and implemented on the Ethernet: the determination of (a) optimum packet length, and (b) optimum buffer size. The delay-throughput characteristics of each of the four priority classes of messages, i.e., life safety, critical equipment, urgent, and normal, have been measured by simulation experiments for various packet lengths and buffer sizes. In this way, optimum packet length and buffer sizes have been deduced. The optimum packet length has been obtained by evaluating the effect of increasing packet size for a particular traffic pattern and offered load. The optimum buffer size at a node corresponds to the best overall performance for messages of all priorities in terms of overflow rates at the buffers of the nodes with respect to increasing offered loads. The optimum packet length has been found to be between 720 and 904 bits. If we assign 720 bits as the optimum packet length, the optimum buffer size at each node is found to be between 400 and 450 packets, i.e., approximately 288 to 321 kbits.

The present article considers the problem of controlling actual temporal order among a number of events in a distributed system based on a common time base. This problem occurs in distributed industrial applications such as environment monitoring and manufacturing. We propose a token-passing algorithm which correctly orders events based on their actual happening time. It is shown that the algorithm is rollback-free, and analytical results show that it also guarantees bounded communication delay under certain assumptions.

TARGET TRACKING USING INFRARED MEASUREMENTS AND LASER ILLUMINATION

A missile target tracker is designed using a filter/correlator (with adaptive target shape identification) based on forward-looking infrared (FLIR) sensor measurements to track the center-of-intensity of the hardbody/plume combination, and another filter using Doppler and/or speckle information in the return from a low-power laser illuminator to estimate the offset between the intensity centroid and the hardbody center-of-mass. The Doppler information is shown to yield smaller blas and error variance from the tracker than the speckle information. Performance of trackers based on just Doppler or both Doppler and speckle information from the laser return is portrayed as a function of important parameters in the tracking environment.

This paper reports a novel architecture for byte error correcting code decoders using Cellular Automata (CA). The chip architecture of the basic building blocks for double byte error locating/correcting code (DbEL/DbEC) is presented. Extension of the architecture to detect arbitrary number of byte errors has also been included. The proposed decoder provides a simple, modular, cascadable and cost effective design that is ideally suited for VLSI implementation.< >

This paper addresses the development of a full-envelope controller for nonlinear systems based on the fusion of ideas from linear control theory and fuzzy logic. The term model-based fuzzy Logic control has been coined to describe this dynamic compensation approach. The model-based fuzzy logic controller is essentially a bank of fuzzy logic controllers with the composite control input smoothed by a linear compensator. The proper fuzzy controller in the bank is chosen by a measurement of the magnitude of the reference input, and the linear compensator is determined based on a linearized model of the nonlinear plant. It is shown that the resulting controller provides full-envelope control of the highly nonlinear benchmark plant.< >

This paper presents a robust speed control of an induction motor (IM) using a load torque observer and a feedforward control. The speed response characteristics using a conventional PI controller are affected by variations of system parameters. In the proposed system, the speed control characteristics are not affected by a load torque disturbance and variations of motor and mechanical parameters. The whole control processing was performed by software using a digital signal processor (DSP) within a reasonable period and experimental results showed the robustness of the control system against a disturbance torque and variations of motor and mechanical parameters.
