Static VAr compensators are reviewed for their application in transmission line compensation and load compensation. Emphasis is given to the application of thyristor controlled reactors and thyristor switched capacitors. After a quick review of the application of static VAr compensators, a detailed theoretical analysis of the reactive power requirement is made. A mathematical model of the compensator is established for the possible controllable parameters. In the theoretical analysis, both symmetrical line and radial line systems are considered. Stability of a transmission line is analyzed for reactive power compensation. Present trends are discussed for finer continuous reactive power control. Solid state reactive power compensation without the need for large capacitors and reactors is seen to be the most probable candidate. Solid state devices for high power capability and transient response along with other reactive power requirements are also discussed.< >

A form of adaptive model-based control is proposed and experimentally evaluated. An adaptive model-based neural network controller (AMBNNC) uses multilayer perceptron artificial neural networks to estimate the payload during high-speed manipulator motion. The payload estimate adapts the feedforward compensator to unmodeled system dynamics and payload variation. The neural nets are trained through repetitive training on trajectory tracking error data. The AMBNNC was experimentally evaluated on the third link of a PUMA-560 manipulator. Tracking performance was evaluated for a wide range of payload and trajectory conditions and compared to a nonadaptive model-based controller. The superior tracking accuracy of the AMBNNC demonstrates the potential of the technique.< >

First, an initial schedule that satisfies all timing constraints is generated using algorithms adapted from layout compaction. This schedule is then improved with respect to resource usage using simulated annealing. SALSA provides for efficient exploration of alternative schedules while supporting timing constraints, conditionals, loops, and subroutines. The SALSA scheduling procedure is described in detail. An implementation of the approach shows promising results.< >

A class of gradient based adaptive algorithms is presented which employs order-statistical transformations of the gradient estimates over a short window. These algorithms, called order-statistical least mean squares (OSLMS), are designed to facilitate adaptive filter performance close to the least-squares optimum in impulsive and other non-Gaussian input environments. Three specific OSLMS filters are defined: the median LMS, the averaged LMS, and the trimmed-mean LMS. For the median LMS some simple convergence results are given. Simulations of all three algorithms, conducted using a generalized exponential density, are presented.< >

Unique localization of multiple sources by antenna arrays requires that the number of sensors be greater than the number of sources. When additional information is given this is no longer true. The authors assumed a signal structure of the autoregressive (AR) type. A localization procedure is presented which consists of two stages; in the first stage the coefficients of the AR signals are estimated, while in the second stage the directions of arrival are estimated. Simulation results demonstrate the performance of the algorithm under different scenarios.< >

An improved version of the Papoulis algorithm for bandlimited signal interpolation is presented. This algorithm uses the concept of initial interpolation. The justification for initial interpolation is developed only through experimental studies. It is shown that the performance of the interpolation scheme depends on the number and distribution of the known data samples.< >

Often the existence of reverberations in the ultrasonic pulse-echo imaging of multilayered structure prevents the direct characterization of each layer. The reverberating pattern is governed by the integrity of the layers, and deterioration of these layers can generate complex and unpredictable patterns. Analytical models for the classification of reverberant patterns using both normal and unique angle scanning schemes are presented. The theoretical model has been utilized in the experimental studies of a particular multilayered reverberant environment that exists in the detection of corrosion and/or volatile changes in stem generator tubing used in nuclear power plants. Various reverberant patterns can be recognized that are in close agreement with theoretical predictions.

Image segmentation can be a useful tool in facing image degradation. In image segmentation the input is a set of pixels with given grey levels and the output is a partition of the set of pixels into connected regions ("classes"), so that a given set of requirements on the single classes and on adjacent classes is satisfied (i.e. pixels belonging to the same class must have approximately the same grey levels or the same textures and pixels belonging to adjacent classes must have significantly different grey levels or different textures). Once segmentation has been performed, the same grey level is associated with each pixel of the same class. The grey level can either be related to the original grey levels of the class, or can be given by a new grey scale on the ground of contrast optimization criteria. The segmentation technique proposed in this presentation is a method for finding the most homogeneous classes and the best possible contrast in a row by row image processing. In partitioning each row of the image, we have two aims: the partition must be as good as possible in its own right, and it must be as compatible as possible with the partitions of the other rows. If we take into account the two aims simultaneously, then the solution procedure becomes complex. To simplify and speed-up the procedure, we can partition each row independently, and then we can apply region merging techniques to the resulting set of row partitions. In the presentation the problem is formulated as a path partitioning one and a simple O(n p) row-partitioning algorithm based on a shortest path formulation of the problem is given. © 1989, Springer-Verlag.

The authors predict the gain performance for a CP-RLSA (circularly polarized radial line slot antenna) with reduced slot coupling and propose a basic design for slot coupling control (SCC). When the CP-RLSA can be used near the resonant frequency with weak coupling, the bandwidth becomes 1.5 times as wide as that of an antenna without SCC. SCC for this purpose is possible by the determination of the slot coupling angle. The proposed design was verified experimentally.< >

A method for the high-precision torque control of a reluctance motor for servo applications is presented. The prototype is a three-phase, eight-pole reluctance motor driven by a MOSFET inverter. The current control as well as the speed control is performed by the software of a digital signal processor. The motor is supplied with sinusoidal current, and two current control methods are proposed. One is based on the vector control principle to achieve linearity between current and torque, and another is developed to obtain the maximum torque/current ratio. Due to the saliency, the instantaneous torque contains a large ripple component. In the case of the test motor, the ripple torque was as much as 26% of the rated torque under the sinusoidal current drive. Experimental results show that the ripple component could be reduced to 6% by superimposing the compensation current component on the current reference.< >
