BACKGROUND:Copy number variants (CNVs) increase risk for neurodevelopmental conditions. The neurobiological mechanisms linking these high-risk genetic variants to clinical phenotypes are largely unknown. An important question is whether brain abnormalities in individuals carrying CNVs are associated with their degree of penetrance. METHODS:We investigated if increased CNV-penetrance for schizophrenia and other developmental disorders was associated with variations in cortical and subcortical morphology. We pooled T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging and genetic data from 22 cohorts from the ENIGMA-CNV consortium. In the main analyses, we included 9,268 individuals (aged 7 to 90 years, 54% females), from which we identified 398 carriers of 36 neurodevelopmental CNVs at 20 distinct loci. A secondary analysis was performed including additional neuroimaging data from the ENIGMA-22q consortium, including 274 carriers of the 22q11.2 deletion and 291 non-carriers. CNV-penetrance was estimated through penetrance scores that were previously generated from large cohorts of patients and controls. These scores represent the probability risk to develop either schizophrenia or other developmental disorders (including developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder and congenital malformations). RESULTS:For both schizophrenia and developmental disorders, increased penetrance scores were associated with lower surface area in the cerebral cortex and lower intracranial volume. For both conditions, associations between CNV-penetrance scores and cortical surface area were strongest in regions of the occipital lobes, specifically in the cuneus and lingual gyrus. CONCLUSIONS:Our findings link global and regional cortical morphometric features with CNV-penetrance, providing new insights into neurobiological mechanisms of genetic risk for schizophrenia and other developmental disorders.

The consistent analysis of complex antenna setups with statistically varying media attributes is performed in this paper through a 3-D curvilinear stochastic finite-difference time-domain technique. The new method generalizes the concept of covariant/contravariant metrics for curved structures and derives the mean value and standard deviation of field components in a single run. Also, for the acceleration of the resulting simulations, all codes are developed in terms of graphics processor units and parallel programming. The profits of the proposed algorithm over multiple-realization Monte-Carlo schemes are certified via comparisons from circular- and trapezoidal-toothed log-periodic antennas with various realistic uncertainties in their materials.

This paper presents the progress in the MusiNet research project, which aims to provide a comprehensive architecture and a prototype implementation of a Networked Music Performance (NMP) system. We describe the Musinet client and server components, and the different approaches followed in our research effort in order to culminate in the most appropriate scheme in terms of delay and quality for the audio and video streams involved. We also describe the MusiNet user interface, which allows an integrated communication between the participants and the proposed NMP system.

Clustering is a task that aims to grouping data objects into several groups. DBSCAN is a density-based clustering method. However, it requires two parameters and these two parameters are hard to decide. Also, DBSCAN has difficulties in finding clusters when the density changes in the dataset. In this paper, we modify the original DBSCAN to make it able to determine the appropriate eps values according to data distribution and to cluster when the density varies among dataset. The main idea is to run DBSCAN with different eps and Minpts values. We also modified the calculation of the Minpts so that DBSCAN can have better clustering results. We did several experiments to evaluate the performance. The results suggest that our proposed DBSCAN can automatically decide the appropriate eps and Minpts values and can detect clusters with different density-levels.

In a world of pervasive computing, embedded systems can be found in a wide range of products and are employed in various heterogeneous domains. The abovementioned devices often need to access, store, manipulate and/or communicate sensitive or even critical information, making the security of their resources and services an important concern in their design process. These issues are further exacerbated by the resource-constrained nature of the devices, in conjunction with the ever-present need for smaller size and lower production costs. This paper aims to provide an overview of the challenges in designing secure embedded systems, covering both node hardware and software issues, as well as relevant network protocols and cryptographic algorithms. Moreover, recent advances in the field are identified, highlighting opportunities for future research.

This paper addresses the importance of continuously evaluating an organization's awareness program and provides guidelines that will help organizations assess their efforts, extending the authors' work in [1]. The proposed methodology evaluates an awareness program considering the most common and essential methods used for delivering awareness material. Key awareness-related processes and accompanying quantitative metrics are identified, along with a methodology for dynamically evaluating the metrics and the overall awareness program as a whole. A software tool is developed, to facilitate the deployment and maintenance of the assessment methods and to formalize their aggregation and evaluation. An organization's security awareness posture is modelled as a dynamic system and the awareness level is calculated and monitored through time via Event Calculus. Furthermore, the tool can be deployed in a multi-agent form, to enable its use by organizations operating through remote offices and distributed locations. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

The demand-side energy management of microgrids comprising of buildings of heterogeneous nature (residential, commercial, industrial, etc.) and thus exhibiting heterogeneous occupancy pattern, requires the development of appropriate energy management systems (EMSs) that can integrate the maximum exploitation of the distributed energy resources like photovoltaic panels with the thermal comfort of the occupants. This paper presents a simulation-based optimization approach for the design of an EMS in grid-connected photovoltaic-equipped microgrids with heterogeneous buildings and occupancy schedules. The EMS optimizes a multi-objective criterion that takes into account both the energy cost and the thermal comfort of the aggregate microgrid. A three-building microgrid test case is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach: comparisons with alternative rule-based and optimization-based EMSs show that the proposed EMS strategy exploits the occupancy information to automatically change the energy demand of each building, resulting in improved energy cost and thermal comfort.

Broadband is starting to be deemed by many as a public utility and several countries have already recognized it as a civil right. The European Commission (EC) acknowledging the significance of broadband services for the improvement of citizen welfare and its economic benefits, has put in place targets for the diffusion of broadband to all citizens and businesses in the European Union. This paper, comparatively assesses the current state of affairs in broadband and digital public services in selected South East Europe countries in order to identify weaknesses and highlight strengths and to produce knowledge resources and provide insights that will support informed decision making including strategy and policy planning. It builds on three surveys that took place in the second quarter of 2013 and evidence gathered from seven South East Europe countries. © 2014 IEEE.

Over the recent past years research effort has been dedicated towards addressing a generic solution in System of Systems (SoS) control problems. Two are the main obstacles that have to be bypassed in such problem cases, especially in real life applications, rendering the optimization problem into a complicated/challenging one: (i) modelling/simulation tools are usually used in order to construct an as-close-as-possible to reality accurate model, whose construction though requires a considerable amount of time and effort and (ii) furthermore, standard control system designs when applied to SoS exhibit poor performance as they are required to handle very high-dimensional problems. In this paper, we present a first attempt towards addressing these issues. More precisely, a new adaptive optimal control methodology is presented and evaluated. The main attributes of the proposed control methodology is its local nature with minimum requirements for coordination between the constituent system of the SoS and its model-free nature.
