The paper introduces the concept of a fractal-like multimodal transportation network (FMTN) in which several isomorphic subnetworks interact each other via distinguished subsets of common shared workstations as to provide a variety of demand-responsive work-piece transportation/handling services. The set of transportation modes supporting production flows within the FMTN environment is considered. In that context, a fractal-like layout of FMS equipped with AGVS where work-piece flows are treated as multimodal processes can be seen as a real-life example of this model. In opposite to the traditional approach we assume that the given network of local cyclic acting AGV services, i.e. corresponding to distinguished isomorphic subnetworks of FMS layout. The goal is to provide a declarative model enabling to state a constraint satisfaction problem aimed at multimodal transportation processes scheduling encompassing production flows. © IFAC.

Although statistical graph comprehension has been investigated in cognitive psychology, it has not been reported in cognitive neuroscience. The study designed an experimental condition, i.e., a statistical graph (SG), and two control conditions, i.e., a text (ST) and a statistical graph with text (SGT), where the ST is a verbal description of the information from the SG, and the SGT is a mixed graph + textual description. We used fMRI to analyze the brain activity of 36 normal subjects while they passively view the statistical information presented in any of SG, ST, and SGT. The results indicate that statistical graph comprehension requires the involvement of both ventral and dorsal streams, with more dependence on the ventral stream than the dorsal. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

As computing becomes ubiquitous, researchers and engineers aim to exploit the potential of the pervasive systems in order to introduce new types of services and address inveterate and emerging problems. This process will, eventually, lead us to the era of urban computing and the Internet of Things; the ultimate goal being to improve our quality of life. But these concepts typically require direct and constant interaction of computing systems with the physical world in order to be realized, which inevitably leads to the introduction of a range of safety and privacy issues that must be addressed. One such important aspect is the fine-grained control of access to the resources of these pervasive embedded systems, in a secure and scalable manner. This paper presents an implementation of such a secure policy-based access control scheme, focusing on the use of well-established, standardized technologies and considering the potential resource-constraints of the target heterogeneous embedded devices. The proposed framework adopts a DPWS-compliant approach for smart devices and introduces XACML-based access control mechanisms. The proof-of-concept implementation is presented in detail, along with a performance evaluation on typical embedded platforms.

Embedded systems devices have a wide application range, an instance of which is their use in Low-power and Lossy Networks (LLNs), which are anticipated to become one of the fundamental building blocks for the realisation of the Internet of Things (IoT). The security issues emerging from the requirement for Web accessibility can be fulfilled by appropriate cryptographic techniques, so as to secure the communicated information, supported by appropriate key exchange protocols, able to cope with the particular nature of such networks. The properties of Identity-Based Encryption (IBE) seem to match well the nature of such networks, thus an IBE-based key establishment protocol would be a good choice to be used in an LLN. However, severe limitations on those devices resources render deployment of expensive key establishment protocols inappropriate. Alternatives are therefore proposed such as offloading some of the computationally-intensive tasks to other, more powerful devices. Our IBE-based key establishment protocol enables a constrained node to exchange a shared secret with a remote party, that typically operates outside the node's network through an also non-constrained proxy node that undertakes the task of performing some of the expensive computations. The proposed key establishment scheme facilitates secure communications among embedded systems devices providing information and services to remote parties, towards the realisation of the Internet of Things.

An efficient parallel implementation of the recently proposed Slackmin classification algorithm that minimizes the mean squared slack variables energy is proposed in this paper. The efficacy of the resulted scheme is demonstrated both in terms of accuracy and computation speed. The parallelization of the Slackmin algorithm is achieved in the framework of GPU programming. Based on this framework the “cuLSlackmin” algorithm for linear problems was implemented, by using the CUDA C/C++ programming model and proposed herein. The introduced parallel algorithm is making use of the advantages imposed by the GPU architecture and achieves high classification rates in a short computation time. A set of experiments with some UCI datasets have shown the high performance of the cuLSlackmin algorithm compared to the Slackmin, LIBSVM and GPULIBSVM algorithms. The high performance of cuLSlackmin algorithm makes it appropriate for big data classification problems.

The paper investigates dual-link fault localization in all-optical ring networks using optical probes (called monitoring bursts). By defining a single monitoring node (MN) in the ring that initiates and terminates a set of monitoring trails (m-trails), the MN can localize any dual-link fault by inspecting the on-off status of the launched optical bursts. We investigate relevant problems in the proposed fault monitoring approach, including m-trail allocation, burst launching time scheduling, and node switch fabric configuration, where constructions are developed to derive optimal solutions and are further examined in numerical experiments. 2(|Ej| - 1) m-trails and at most (2δ + L)(|E| - 1) + δ(|E| - 2) of monitoring delay are required for dual-link fault localization from a single MN in a ring with|E| links, where δ is the burst propagation delay along a unidirectional link and L is the burst length.

Broadband is starting to be deemed by many as a public utility and several countries have already recognized it as a civil right. The European Commission (EC) acknowledging the significance of broadband services for the improvement of citizen welfare and its economic benefits, has put in place targets for the diffusion of broadband to all citizens and businesses in the European Union. This paper, comparatively assesses the current state of affairs in broadband and digital public services in selected South East Europe countries in order to identify weaknesses and highlight strengths and to produce knowledge resources and provide insights that will support informed decision making including strategy and policy planning. It builds on three surveys that took place in the second quarter of 2013 and evidence gathered from seven South East Europe countries.

Wireless sensor network (WSN) is combination of tiny sensors made up with MEMS technology and has important applications such as target tracking and environmental monitoring. In recent times WSNs becomes more attractive because of their sensing ability, low cost, self-organizing nature in different environments. In this paper we have discussed two existing techniques for data communication such as Normal technique and Distance and Density Based Cluster Selection algorithm (DDCSA) and we find that these two techniques are not optimal enough to save energy in a network. In DDCSA protocols there is a problem of cluster breaking and lot of energy is consumed to reforming clusters. In this paper we enhance the Distance and Density Based Cluster Selection Algorithm (DDCSA) using Geographical Forwarding with Face Routing Technique. Simulation Results shows that our Enhanced DDCSA performs better than DDCSA & Normal technique and gives better results in term of Energy spent, Average delay and Packet delivery ratio.

The acceptable consistent matrix is one of the important issue in comparison matrix to confirm the rational of decision maker opinion. This paper presents a method using ant colony optimization(ACO) to solve the inconsistent comparison matrix to obtain the best consistent ratio(CR), named ACSICR. This method aims to enhance the CR by fractioning the original element to several candidates element to substitute. To evaluate the performance, the ACSICR is tested on some inconsistent comparison matrices. The experimental results have shown that the proposed algorithm is able to decrease the consistent ratio significantly.

Course Selection in computer Science: Gender Differences

This study focuses on the investigation of the course choices made by undergraduates of different gender in computer Science (CS). For this purpose, the degrees of all graduates (89 graduates) from the CS and technology Department at University of Peloponnese, Tripoli, Greece, since its establishment were studied. The analysis of the data shows that: (a) the percentage of female graduates is lower than the percentage of male graduates, (b) higher percentage of girls choose courses that belong to the ‘Theoretical CS’ division, (c) higher percentage of boys choose courses that belong to the ‘Software Systems’ division, (d) girls seemed to not prefer programming ‘lab-based’ courses, (e) girls and boys chose equally courses from the ‘computer technology and computer Systems’ division, but some of these courses are not selected by any of the girls, (f) more girls than boys choose ‘General Education’ courses, and (g) higher percentage of girls choose courses related to humanities and social sciences.
