With the development of mobile code frameworks for embedded systems, an application can be structured as a set of cooperating components (agents) that are placed on the nodes of the system in a flexible way. Reducing the network traffic caused by the application components is a crucial issue for the increase in the lifetime of wireless embedded systems, since it is widely known that the communication cost plays the most significant role in the energy consumption of embedded devices. To this end, most placement algorithms place or move an agent towards the center of gravity of the communication workload. However, if the target node does not have enough capacity, the attempt is usually aborted. In this paper, we introduce eviction-enabled algorithms that allow nodes to free capacity by forcing a locally hosted agent to move to another node, even at a loss, to accept a new and potentially more beneficial agent. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that agents are evicted by local hosts to enable beneficial agent migrations and eventually improve the total network cost. In this paper, we provide algorithms tackling the aforementioned problem in a fully distributed manner. We also present and discuss the results of extensive simulations, showing that eviction-enabled algorithms can outperform their counterparts by up to 300%. © 2012 IEEE.

An important issue faced by Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) application is scalability. Each SaaS application is typically shared by multiple (tens or hundreds) organizations (tenants). Each tenant may have hundreds or thousands of users. Thus, the number of concurrent accesses is high. Handling a large number of user requests effectively is critical for SaaS applications. Various aspects of SaaS can have a significant impact on its scalability, including levels of scalability mechanisms, automated migration, tenant awareness, workload support, fault-tolerance and recovery, software architecture and database access. This paper identifies scalability factors and discusses their impacts on the scalability of SaaS applications. Existing approaches for addressing the scalibility of SaaS applications are also analyzed, and this paper suggests some alternatives to improve SaaS scalability based on the factors identified. © 2012 IEEE.

With the increasing performance demand in real-time systems it becomes more and more relevant to provide feed-back to engineers and programmers, but also software development tools, on the performance-relevant code parts of a real-time program. So far, the information provided to programmers through tools was limited to an estimation of the worst-case execution time (WCET) and its associated worst-case execution path (WCEP). However, these metrics only provide partial information. Only those code parts that are on one of the WCEPs are indicated to the programmer. No information is provided for all other code parts. To give an accurate view covering the entire code base, tools in the spirit of standard program profiling tools are required. This work proposes an efficient approach to compute worst-case timing information for all code parts of a program using a complementary metric, called criticality. Every statement of a real-time program is assigned a criticality value, expressing how critical the respective code is with respect to the global WCET. This gives an accuratc view to programmers how closc the worst execution path passing through a specific part of a real-time program is to the global WCEP. We formally define the criticality metric and investigate some of its properties with respect to dominance in control-flow graphs. Exploiting some of those properties, we propose an algorithm that reduces tlic overhead of computing the metric to cover complete real-time programs. Copyright 2012 ACM.

The cyclic scheduling problem modeled in terms of Cyclic Concurrent Process Systems is considered. The problem can be seen as a kind of Diophantine problem, hence its solvability, i.e. schedulability, plays a pivotal role in many supply-chain problems. In contradiction to the traditionally offered solutions the approach proposed allows one to take into account such behavioral features as transient periods and deadlocks occurrence. So, the contribution's aim is the modeling framework enabling an evaluation of cyclic scheduling problems solvability, i.e., the declarative approach to reachability problems regarding cyclic steady states determination as well as conditions guaranteeing assumed performance of multimodal processes executed within a concurrent cyclic processes environment. © 2012 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

Learning of fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) is one of the most useful characteristics which have a high impact on modeling and inference capabilities of them. The learning approaches for FCMs are concentrated on learning the connection matrix, based either on expert intervention and/or on the available historical data. Most learning approaches for FCMs are Hebbian-based and evolutionary-based algorithms. A new learning algorithm for FCMs is proposed in this research work, inheriting the main aspects of the bagging approach which is an ensemble based learning approach. The FCM nonlinear Hebbian learning (NHL) algorithm enhanced by the bagging technique is investigated contributing to an approach where the model is trained using NHL algorithm as a base learner classifier. This work is inspired from the neural networks ensembles and it is used to learn the FCM ensembles produced by the NHL exploiting better classification accuracies. © 2012 Springer-Verlag .

In this work, we propose an efficient resource management approach for WDM-PON ring architectures that supports dynamic bandwidth allocation and sharing of downstream wavelengths. We propose a modification in the ONU design, to dynamically setup virtual circuits for inter-ONU communication. The reservation mechanism is arbitrated by the OLT, which also monitors the traffic imbalances of downstream channels.

This paper concerns the domain of the multimodal transportation systems composed of buses, trains, trams and subways lines and focuses on the scheduling problems encountered in these systems. Transportation Network Infrastructure (TNI) can be modeled as a network of lines providing cyclic routes for particular kinds of stream-like moving transportation means. Lines are connected by common shared change stations. Depending on TNI timetabling the time of the trip of passengers following different itineraries may dramatically differ, e.g. the same distances along the north-south, and east-west directions may require different travel time. So, the mine question regards of TNI schedulability, e.g. the guarantee the same distances in arbitrarily assumed directions will require approximate traveled time. Considered timetabling problem belongs to NP-hard ones. The declarative model of TNI enabling to formulate cyclic scheduling problem in terms of the constraint satisfaction one is our main contribution. At last, the simulated results manifest the promising properties of the proposed model. © 2012 IFAC.

Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) are becoming more essential to wireless communications due to growing popularity of mobile devices. However, MANETs do not seem to effectively support multimedia applications and especially video transmission. In this work, we propose a cross-layer design that aims to improve the performance of video transmission using TCP Friendly Rate Control (TFRC). Our design provides priority to video packets and exploits information from the MAC layer in order to improve TFRC's performance. The proposed cross-layer mechanism utilizes Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) measurements along the routing path, in order to make the route reconstruction procedure more efficient. Simulation results show that both the use of traffic categorization and the SNR utilization lead to important improvements of video transmission over the mobile Ad hoc network. More specifically, simulations indicate increased average Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) for the received video, increased throughput and packet delivery ration, as well as reduced average end-to-end delay.

Web 2.0 has facilitated interactive information sharing on the WWW, allowing users the opportunity to articulate their opinions on different topics. In this framework, certain practices implement information monitoring systems so as digests, reports on keywords and thematic queries regarding opinions on government decisions to be created. Analysis of rubrics associations, primary semantic and statistical interpretation of the texts is usually carried out. It is, on the other hand, rather difficult to get punctual predicts and estimate sufficiently forum users' opinion strength. In this work we present a methodology which automatically mines and estimates the strength of users' opinions on text forums regarding government decisions. According to our methodology, quantitative features are automatically mined from forum posts and then passed to a Support Vector Machine based classifier where the users' opinion strength is estimated. The proposed methodology has been validated in real data and initial experimental results are presented. © 2012 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

Past research has proposed the usage of assisting cells with Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) over a Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) to increase the the Spectral Efficiency (SE) of LTE. In this paper we propose and investigate a method for optimizing the power consumption of the network while retaining an acceptable SE for most users. We design an algorithm that makes use of genetic optimization and analytical estimation of the SE. The algorithm is implemented in a novel simulation tool that allows experimentation over various user distributions and LTE deployments similar to the real-world ones. This simulation tool estimates the SE of each user and is able to optimize the network deployment by adjusting the individual transmission power levels for each cell.
