Packet-switched interconnect fabric is a promising on-chip communication solution for many-core architectures. It offers high throughput and excellent scalability for on-chip data and protocol transactions. The main problem posed by this communication fabric is the potentially-high and nondeterministic network latency caused by router data buffering and resource arbitration. This paper describes a new method to minimize onchip network latency, which is motivated by the observation that only a small percentage of on-chip data and protocol traffic is latency-critical. Existing work focusing on minimizing average network latency is thus suboptimal. Such techniques expend most of the design, area, and power overhead accelerating latency-noncritical traffic for which there is no corresponding application-level speedup. We propose run-time techniques that identify latency-critical traffic by leveraging network data-transaction and protocol information. Latency-critical traffic is permitted to bypass router pipeline stages and latency-noncritical traffic. These techniques are evaluated via a router design that has been implemented using TSMC 65nm technology. Detailed network latency simulation and hardware characterization demonstrate that, for latencycritical traffic, the proposed solution closely approximates the ideal interconnect even under heavy load while preserving throughput for both latency-critical and noncritical traffic. © 2009 EDAA.

In this paper, we propose a design of far-field single speaker localization system including noisy speech separation and enhancement with two separated channel microphones. First, we perform noisy speech separation simulations using a Fast-ICA (independent component analysis) with subspacebased speech enhancement. The Fast-ICA can be used to separate the two original source signals - noise and speech from their mixtures. Subspace-based speech enhancement is then utilized to reduce the residual background noise of the separated speech. Second, we calculate time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) estimation for five directions of both right and left sides in the horizontal plane to realize speaker localization. The TDOA method estimates the time delay difference between the incoming speech signals to microphones using the average magnitude difference function (AMDF) algorithm. Finally we evaluate the localization system under various noisy environments. The experimental results reveal that the applicability of a system with noisy speech separation and enhancement, particularly for the front directions. © 2009 IEEE.

Cooperative communications have been demonstrated to be effective in combating the multiple fading effects in wireless networks, and improving the network performance in terms of adaptivity, reliability, data throughput and network life time. In this paper, we investigate the use of cooperative communications for quality of service (QoS) provisioning in resource-constrained wireless sensor networks, and propose MRL-CC, a Multi-agent Reinforcement Learning based multi-hop mesh Cooperative Communication mechanism for wireless sensor networks. In order to disseminate data reliably in MRL-CC, a multi-hop mesh cooperative structure is first constructed. Then a cooperative mechanism with cooperative partner assignments, and coding and transmission schemes is implemented using a multi-agent reinforcement learning algorithm. We compare the network performance of MRL-CC with MMCC [1], a Multi-hop Mesh structure based Cooperative Communication scheme, and investigate the impacts of network traffic load, interference and sensor node's mobility on the network performance. Simulation results show that MRL-CC performs well in terms of a number of QoS metrics, and fits well in large-scale networks and highly dynamic environments.

In this paper, we investigate the use of cooperative communications for reliable data dissemination in wireless sensor networks. We first identify the disadvantages of some existing cooperative schemes. While the previously proposed "multihop mesh cooperative transmission structure" addresses these disadvantages, it suffers from large end-to-end delays during data disseminations due to its random value-based forwarding node selection scheme. This paper proposes a novel distance-based forwarding node selection scheme that yields smaller end-to-end delays. We present extensive simulation results that verify the effectiveness of the proposed data dissemination scheme.

Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) epitomizes the increasing popularity of enhanced end-user experience in Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), since it allows the economical delivery of multimedia services to a large number of users. MBMS multicast supports both Pomt-to-Point (PTP) and Point-to-Multipoint (PTM) modes in order to confront the strict resource limitations in wireless environments and improve efficiency during data transmission. The aim of this paper is to highlight the performance enhancements of MBMS multicasting over the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and underline the need for its integration in MBMS specifications. HSDPA can play an instrumental role in positioning MBMS services as a key enabler for true Mobile Broadband. Under this prism, we investigate the provision of MBMS services over HSDPA, through a direct comparison between HSDPA and Release '99 bearers. Since downlink transmission power is the most limited resource in UMTS networks, the evaluation is performed via an analytical dimensioning of the MBMS transmission power both in macrocells and microcells. Simulation results reveal that HSDPA can significantly optimize MBMS power allocation, bring more capacity and, consequently, enable the mass-market delivery of rich multimedia services in mobile networks.

In this research work we investigate the analysis of Acoustic Emission (AE) signals using wavelet decomposition to locate a single event (crack), which usually takes place in three typical areas in a ship hull. The problem is a typical classification problem relying on the use of novel features extracted from the AE time series. As in most classification problems the extraction and selection of the most appropriate set of features plays a major role in the overall performance of the method and it is by no means a trivial task. Once a suitable set of features is extracted even ldquosimplerdquo classification models can perform adequately whereas a non-informative set of features even combined with sophisticated classifiers can lead to disappointing results. Here, we exploit the multi-resolution capabilities of wavelet decomposition, so that a set of features is extracted which it is then combined with a simple classifier. The proposed method gives superior classification rates for noisy environments compared to our previous work where conventional methods for feature extraction were deployed.

In New Zealand and Australia, the BRACElet project has been investigating students' acquisition of programming skills in introductory programming courses. The project has explored students' skills in basic syntax, tracing code, understanding code, and writing code, seeking to establish the relationships between these skills. This ITiCSE working group report presents the most recent step in the BRACElet project, which includes replication of earlier analysis using a far broader pool of naturally occurring data, refinement of the SOLO taxonomy in code-explaining questions, extension of the taxonomy to code-writing questions, extension of some earlier studies on students' 'doodling' while answering exam questions, and exploration of a further theoretical basis for work that until now has been primarily empirical.

This paper presents a novel action selection method for multi robot task sharing problem. Two autonomous mobile robots try to cooperate for push a box to a goal position. Both robots equipped with object and goal sensing, but do not have explicit communication ability. We explore the use of fuzzy signatures and decision making system to intention guessing and efficient action selection. Virtual reality simulation is used to build and test our proposed algorithm.

Due to the factors like processing power limitations and channel capabilities images are often down sampled and transmitted at low bit rates resulting in a low resolution compressed image. High resolution images can be reconstructed from several blurred, noisy and down sampled low resolution images using a computational process know as super resolution reconstruction. The problem of recovering a high resolution image from a sequence of low resolution compressed images is considered. In this paper, we propose lifting schemes for intentionally introducing down sampling of the high resolution image sequence before compression and then utilize super resolution techniques for generating a high resolution image at the decoder. Lifting wavelet transform has its advantages over the ordinary wavelet transform by way of reduction in memory required for its implementation. This is possible because lifting transform uses in-place computation. The lifting coefficients replace the image samples present in the respective memory locations. In our proposed approach the forward lifting is applied to the high resolution images which are compressed using set portioning in hierarchical trees (SPHIT), the compressed images are transmitted which results in low resolution images at the encoder, at the decoder super resolution techniques are applied; lifting scheme based fusion is performed, then decoded using DSPIHT and Inverse lifting is applied. In order to remove noise from the reconstructed image soft thresholding is performed and the blur is removed using blind deconvolution, and finally interpolated using our novel interpolation technique. We have performed both objective and subjective analysis of the reconstructed image, and the resultant image has better super resolution factor, and a higher ISNR and PSNR.
