Multicast transmission is one of the major goals for Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) that motivated the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to launch the Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) framework. MBMS is a key framework that constitutes a significant step towards the so-called Mobile Broadband by efficiently utilizing network and radio resources, both in the core network and more importantly, in the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN). One of most important problems that MBMS is currently facing is the assignment of the appropriate transport channel for the transmission of MBMS data. This paper proposes an alternative solution to the problem of efficient transport channel selection. In particular, we introduce a cost-based scheme for the efficient radio bearer selection that minimizes the delivery cost of the multicast data. In our approach, the telecommunication cost over the most crucial interfaces of UMTS is calculated and based on this cost, the appropriate radio bearer is selected. © 2008, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing. In this paper, a novel approach for availability evaluation is presented. In order to precisely capture the features of practical network operation and improve the accuracy in the availability evaluation, the dependency of network element failures is characterized by failure states (FS). For this purpose, a method that generating a failure state list for protection is developed and embedded in the proposed survivable routing algorithm such that the pre-defined connection availability can be guaranteed as simple as by protecting a single FS failure. Built on the availability evaluation a novel availability-constrained survivable routing algorithm, called Generalized Dedicated Protection (GDP), is introduced for circuit switched mesh networks. The proposed algorithm inherits the simplicity of dedicated protection mechanisms while offering the connection availability guarantee in presence of the network topological limitation that has been taken as the greatest challenge in the related research effort. Finally, extensive simulation is conducted to verify the advantages gained in the proposed GDP method compared with a number of previously reported counterparts.

This paper presents some of the results obtained by the application of Ethernet layer 2 quality of service in IP networks. IP networks traditionally provide quality of service in Layer 3. However, since there is an enormous existing Layer 2 infrastructure, todaypsilas networks could benefit from the deployment of Layer 2 quality of service and the cooperation between layer 2 quality of service and layer 3 quality of service. In this paper, experiments are suggested and conducted and a scheme is suggested for efficient cooperation between Layer 2 and Layer 3 QoS provisioning.

The paper presents an architecture to implement Karatsuba Multiplier on an FPGA platform. Detailed analysis has been carried out on how existing algorithms utilize FPGA resources. Based on the observations the work develops a hybrid technique which has a better area delay product compared to the known algorithms. The results have been practically demonstrated through a large number of experiments. Subsequently, the work develops a masking strategy to prevent power based side channel attacks on the multiplier. It has been found that the proposed masked Hybrid Karatsuba multiplier is more compact compared to existing designs.

Given an undirected graph with edge weights, we are asked to find an orientation, i.e., an assignment of a direction to each edge, so as to minimize the weighted maximum outdegree in the resulted directed graph. The problem is called MMO, and is a restricted variant of the well-known minimum makespan problem. As previous studies, it is shown that MMO is in P for trees, weak NP-hard for planar bipartite graphs, and strong NP-hard for general graphs. There are still gaps between those graph classes. The objective of this paper is to show tight thresholds of complexity: We show that MMO is (i) in P for cactuses, (ii) weakly NP-hard for outerplanar graphs, and also (iii) strongly NP-hard for P4-bipartite graphs. The latter two are minimal superclasses of the former. Also, we show the NP-hardness for the other related graph classes, diamond-free, house-free, series-parallel, bipartite and planar. © 2008, Australian computer Society, Inc.

Historically, the ACM Multimedia Conference is split into a "technical" program and an "arts" program. These programs sometimes seem completely separate from one another, victims of a "semantic gap" between disciplines. The goal of this panel is to create a space in which scientists learn from artists, and arts from science. We need to discover new connections between modalities of research. In order to create the most exciting and powerful future forms of interactive multimedia systems, the ones that will create the most beneficial broader impact on humanity, we need to foster new collaborations between artists and scientists. This panel seeks to bridge the great divide of language and communities that has fragmented us, creating a new space for developing connections between the arts and sciences of multimedia research, as embodied through the artists and scientists of ACM Multimedia. The goal is to make this conference a premier site for catalyzing emergent connections. Among the ancient Greeks, the techne, which included the sciences, were based in the arts. Our modes of knowledge production have since separated and grown alienated. "What weird stuff are those people doing?" To bridge the divide, we must understand and acknowledge differences, and use this as a basis for discovering common ground. In the sciences, knowledge is constructed empirically, through hypotheses and validations. Aesthetics and concepts play essential roles in how works of art are formulated to stimulate experiences. Where do these aims intersect and how might they inform each other? In this conference, one track develops pattern recognition methods for content analysis and retrieval. Another develops network and system techniques. Applications invoke these methods in usable systems. Human-centered multimedia serves as a bridge connecting human experiences with algorithmic methods. The interactive art program develops new concepts of how multimedia can function culturally, amidst society,

We present a novel active mask framework for the segmentation of fluorescence microscope images of cells, and in particular, for the segmentation of the Golgi body as well as cell- volume computation. We demonstrate that the algorithm is able to efficiently segment a stack of images and successfully assign multiple pieces of the Golgi body in a 2D image to the cell to which they belong. Further, we demonstrate that our algorithm is more accurate than manual segmentation of these images.

The paper presents a hybrid thresholding approach for binarization and enhancement of degraded documents. Historical documents contain information of great cultural and scientific value. But such documents are frequently degraded over time. Digitized degraded documents require specialized processing to remove different kinds of noise and to improve readability. The approach for enhancing degraded documents uses a combination of two thresholding algorithms. First, iterative global thresholding is applied to the smoothed degraded image until the stopping criteria is reached. Then a threshold selection method from gray level histogram is used to binarize the image. The next step is detecting areas where noise still remains and applying iterative thresholding locally. A method to improve the quality of textual information in the document is also done as a post processing stage, thus making the approach efficient and better suited for character recognition applications.

In this paper, we propose a novel architecture of photo core transform (PCT) which is used as transformation of image data into frequency domain in HD Photo, an emerging image coding system developed by Microsoft. In order to support various memory bus bandwidths used in system-on-a-chip (SoC) design, an implementation for each bandwidth can be derived based on our architecture. In addition, in order to reduce the local memory size and the traffic between the main and local memories, we propose a novel data transfer and storing scheme for PCT. The experimental results show that hardware modules corresponding to the given bus bandwidths can be reasonably derived from the proposed architecture.

This paper deals with the joint estimation of time-delay and spatial (direction-of-arrival, DOA) parameters of several replicas of a known signal in an unknown spatially correlated field. Unstructured and structured models have been proposed for maximum likelihood (ML) estimators in the literature. The former suffers from a severe performance degradation in some scenarios, whereas the latter involves huge complexity. It is shown how the extended invariance principle (EXIP) can be applied to obtain estimates with the quality of those of the structured model, but with the complexity of the unstructured one. We present a method to improve the quality of the time-delay estimates obtained with an unstructured spatial model when an estimate of the DOAs is available. Exemplarily, simulation results for time-delay estimation for GPS (Global Positioning System) are included and confirm that our proposal approaches the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of the structured model even when suboptimal DOA estimates obtained by ESPRIT are introduced.
