This paper presents a mobile and portable stereo vision system designed for the assessment of road signage and delineation (lines and reflective pavement markers or "cat's eyes"). This novel system allows both geometric and photometric measurements to be made on objects in a scene. Any objects examined can then be accurately positioned on a National grid through the fusion of stereo vision with GPS technology. Automated feature extraction and analysis routines have also been developed to make the system fully autonomous.

It is observed that during the evolution of species, reticulation is an important event and is very prevalent in several organisms. However, the analytical tools for the representation of these events are still under development. This is primarily because of the difficulty involved in detecting these reticulation events that have taken place during the evolution using the sequences that are currently available in some form. Since it is not possible to get each sequence starting from the root (beginning of the evolution process), inferring the history has to be based on a few assumptions, which are biologically valid. In this paper, we propose an algorithm which, we feel, is a step in this direction. The algorithm detects the sequences which require reticulation events for their formation and returns the count of such sequences.

The main objective of the paper is to introduce how the concept of tensor HOSVD can be carried over to the TP (Tensor Product) dynamic models, namely, how we can define and generate the "HOSVD like" decomposition of Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) dynamic models. We term this decomposition as HOSVD based canonical form of TP model or polytopic model form. The key idea and the basic concept of this decomposition was proposed recently with the TP model transformation based control design methodology. The novelty of this paper is to present the mathematical background of this concept. The paper shows convergency theorems how the TP model transformation is capable of reconstructing this HOSVD based canonical form numerically. The proofs of the theorems are lengthly, therefore they are omitted. The paper also presents numerical examples to show the applicability, efficiency and uniformity of the numerical reconstruction. © 2006 IEEE.

We present a detailed performance evaluation of a hybrid optical switching architecture called Overspill Routing in Optical Networks (ORION). The ORION architecture combines wavelength and (electronic) packet switching, so as to obtain the advantages of both switching paradigms. We have developed an extensive network simulator where the basic features of the ORION architecture were modeled, including suitable load-varying sources and edge/core node architectures. Various aspects of the ORION architecture were studied including the routing policies used (i.e. once ORION always ORION and lightpath reentry) and the various options available for the buffer architecture. The complete network study shows that ORION can absorb temporary traffic overloads, as intended, provided sufficient buffering is present.

In this paper we give an overview of the four TRECVID tasks submitted by COST292, European network of institutions in the area of semantic multimodal analysis and retrieval of digital video media. Initially, we present shot boundary evaluation method based on results merged using a confidence measure. The two SB detectors user here are presented, one of the Technical University of Delft and one of the LaBRI, University of Bordeaux 1, followed by the description of the merging algorithm. The high-level feature extraction task comprises three separate systems. The first system, developed by the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) utilises a set of MPEG-7 low-level descriptors and Latent Semantic Analysis to detect the features. The second system, developed by Bilkent University, uses a Bayesian classifier trained with a "bag of subregions" for each keyframe. The third system by the Middle East Technical University (METU) exploits textual information in the video using character recognition methodology. The system submitted to the search task is an interactive retrieval application developed by Queen Mary, University of London, University of Zilina and ITI from Thessaloniki, combining basic retrieval functionalities in various modalities (i.e. visual, audio, textual) with a user interface supporting the submission of queries using any combination of the available retrieval tools and the accumulation of relevant retrieval results over all queries submitted by a single user during a specified time interval. Finally, the rushes task submission comprises a video summarisation and browsing system specifically designed to intuitively and efficiently presents rushes material in video production environment. This system is a result of joint work of University of Bristol, Technical University of Delft and LaBRI, University of Bordeaux 1.

We propose an image matching method based on cumulative distribution function (CDF). The CDF of the query and database images are approximated by piecewise linear models with two parameters, slope and intercept at various grayscale intervals. The equations solving the least squares line fitting algorithm are very simple to form, due to closed form expressions. The contiguous set of lines approximating the CDFs enables us to compare query and database images with corresponding estimated slopes and intercepts. As the dynamic range of CDF is from 0 to 1, images of different sizes can be compared. Approximation of CDFs with lines further reduces the dimension of the image features and thus improves the speed of matching. Also, the monotonically increasing CDF is well suited for approximations with lines. Resolving the CDF with lines of different lengths recasts the matching to a hierarchical methodology

Real-time detection of moving objects in video sequences

An approach to detection of moving objects in video sequences, with application to video surveillance is presented. The algorithm combines two kinds of change points, which are detected from the region-based frame difference and adjusted background subtraction. An adaptive threshold technique is employed to automatically choose the threshold value to segment the moving objects from the still background. And experiment results show that the algorithm is effective and efficient in practical situations. Furthermore, the algorithm is robust to the effects of the changing of lighting condition and can be applied for video surveillance system.

Practical experience is an important component of the educational process. However, the time and economical resources often required for the setting up and construction of scientific laboratories is outside the scope of many institutions. A solution to this problem could be found in the adaptation of the Virtual Reality technology, which could allow the creation of Virtual Laboratories, which will simulate the processes and actions that could take place in real laboratories. In particular, this paper, based on the expertise and motivation gained by the VirRAD-IST project, proposes and describes such an educational virtual laboratory, which aims to meet the requirements of a teal laboratory and furthermore to support communication and collaboration services. We propose a web-based system, which allows users to perform experiments on educational fields, such as Physics or Chemistry in 3D multi-user worlds where users are represented by avatars and they are offered a wide range of communication and collaboration services in. order to simulate efficiently a real learning experimental process.

Early circuit performance estimation and easy-to-apply methods for minimum-delay gate sizing are needed, in order to enhance circuit's performance and to increase designers' productivity. In this paper, we present a practical method to perform gate sizing, taking also into account the contribution of fixed wiring loads. Closed-form bounds are derived and a simple recursive procedure is developed that directly calculate the gate sizes required to achieve minimum delay. The designer, using the proposed method, can easily compare different implementations of the same circuit and explore the energy-delay design space, including in the analysis the effect of interconnect. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

In this paper, we present the design principles for virtual spaces and two different tools as solutions for supporting e-collaboration and multi-user communication in web-based learning communities. The first solution, called Virtual Conference, is designed and implemented in the framework of the VirRAD European project. It is a two-dimensional space where participants represented by their photos can use various e-collaboration tools. The second solution, called EVE Training Area, is a three-dimensional space where participants, represented by 3D humanoid avatars, can use a variety of e-collaboration tools. This paper describes the functionality provided by both tools, compares them, and proposes cases for exploiting each solution. © 2005 IEEE.
