Classifying images into a set of semantic categories that are meaningful to humans has proved to be a challenging and attractive problem in the field of content-based retrieval. Addressing this problem is typically based on the initial extraction of low-level features for the images and the subsequent application of a pattern recognition technique, to divide the feature space in a number of subspaces corresponding to the semantic categories. An extension to this framework is presented in this paper, aiming at the improvement of the efficiency of image classification systems. This is based on the introduction of an unsupervised still image segmentation algorithm to the process and its combination with MPEG-7 low-level descriptors and a Bayes classifier. Experimental results using different pairs of classes and corresponding data sets demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach.

Sensor networks consist of small wireless sensor nodes deployed randomly over an area to monitor the environment or detect intrusion. The coverage provided by sensor networks is very crucial to their effectiveness. Many of the important applications of sensor networks demand autonomous mobility for the sensor nodes. Early failure of sensor nodes can lead to coverage loss that requires coverage maintenance schemes. In this paper, we propose dynamic coverage maintenance (DCM) schemes that exploit the limited mobility of the sensor nodes. The main objective of coverage maintenance is to compensate the loss of coverage with minimum expenditure of energy. We propose a set of DCM schemes which can be executed on individual sensor nodes having a knowledge of only their local neighborhood topology. We propose four algorithms to decide which neighbors to migrate, and to what distance, such that the energy expended is minimized and the coverage obtained for a given number of live nodes is maximized. The decision and movement is completely autonomous in the network, and involves movement of one-hop neighbors of a dead sensor node. We also propose an extension to these algorithms, called cascaded DCM, which extends the migrations to multiple hops. We have also compared the performance of the different algorithms in terms of the improvement in coverage, average migration distance of the nodes, and the lifetime of the network

This paper presents a Lyapunov-based positioning controller for a macro-micro manipulator suppressing the bending and torsional vibrations of the macro arm. On the basis of the distributed parameter model, the output feedback controller is constructed using the Lyapunov method. The asymptotic stability in the neighborhood of the desired states of the closed-loop system is proven. The proposed controller consists of the PD feedback of the motor angles and a feedback of the torsional strain at the tip of the macro arm. Some simulations are performed to show the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

In this paper, we present an encryption scheme for MPEG-4 FGS which provides the same or a little coarser granularity of scalability after encryption. The scheme encrypts compressed data of each video packet or block independently. Initialization vectors are generated with a method to minimize the overhead. The scalability provided in an encrypted codestream using this scheme enables intermediate nodes to truncate an encrypted bitstream at near R-D optimality directly without decryption, which enhances system security. The scheme has virtually negligible overhead, and produces encrypted codestream with virtually the same error resilience performance as the unencrypted case. These features are very desirable in many applications

Behavioural changes of medaka (Oryzias latipes) treated with an anticholinesterase insecticide, diazinon (0.1 mg L-1), were continuously observed for 4 days in semi-natural conditions. Although variations occurred in individual specimens, the movement tracks appeared differently with typical short-range movement with irregular turns and shaking after the treatments. Eight movement patterns frequently observed before and after the treatments were selected, and the variables characterising the movement patterns were compared quantitatively. The variables were clearly differentiated when the movement patterns were correspondingly matched before and after the treatments (e.g., vertical movements, horizontal movements, etc). Meander and stop duration were highly different among the selected movement patterns. Additionally, different degree of toxic response behaviours could also be detected by quantitative characterisation of the variables. Response behaviour was confirmed with toxicological experiments that show the decrease in the acetylcholine esterase activity in the head and body of specimens. Quantitative investigations on the variables of the movement tracks suggested the usefulness of response behaviour as a monitoring tool for environmental assessment. © Springer Science + Business Media, Inc. 2005.

Data mining provides the opportunity to extract useful information from large databases. Various techniques have been proposed in this context in order to extract this information in the most efficient way. However, efficiency is not our only concern in this study. The security and privacy issues over the extracted knowledge must be seriously considered as well. By taking this into consideration, we study the procedure of hiding sensitive association rules in binary data sets by blocking some data values and we present an algorithm for solving this problem. We also provide a fuzzification of the support and the confidence of an association rule in order to accommodate for the existence of blocked/unknown values. In addition, we quantitatively compare the proposed algorithm with other already published algorithms by running experiments on binary data sets, and we also qualitatively compare the efficiency of the proposed algorithm in hiding association rules. We utilize the notion of border rules, by putting weights in each rule, and we use effective data structures for the representation of the rules so as (a) to minimize the side effects created by the hiding process and (b) to speed up the selection of the victim transactions. Finally, we discuss the advantages and the limitations of blocking. Copyright 2004 ACM.

E-Learning has become a serious discipline in IT supported management with the aim of enabling life-long learning. Unfortunately, E-Learning is a bottom-up based technical approach and the vision of life-long learning is not yet reached, because it demands the existence of resource pools as a basis enabling cross referencing of topics, skills and all other resources within an organizational memory. Fortunately, new technologies coming from the Semantic Web and Web-Services communities will be able to overcome some of the hindering technical obstacles providing interoperability between different platforms and programming paradigms so that resources can be personalized and presented on arbitrary clients. This paper embraces these technologies and presents a generic E-Learning engineering approach that fits them into a top-down IT-supported management framework so that business goals may be transformed into a technical environment. Furthermore, this approach also sets grounds for closing the gap to E-Business (e.g. Performance Management like the Balanced Scorecard). © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This paper describes an accurate unsupervised speaker adaptation method for lecture speech recognition using multiple LVC-SRs. In an unsupervised speaker adaptation framework, the improvement of recognition performance by adapting acoustic models greatly depends on the accuracy of labels such as phonemes and syllables. Therefore, extraction of the adaptation data guided by the confidence measures is effective for un-supervised adaptation. In this paper, we looked for the high confidence portions based on the agreement between two LVC-SRs, adapted acoustic models using the portions attached with high accurate labels, and then improved the recognition accuracy. We applied our method to the Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese (CSJ) and the method improved the recognition rate by about 5% in comparison with a traditional method.

This paper addresses issues that are specific to the implementation of automatic speech recognition (ASR) applications and services in client-server scenarios. It is assumed in all of these scenarios that functionality in a human-machine dialog system is distributed between mobile client devices and network based multi-user media and application servers. It is argued that, while there has already been a great deal of research addressing issues relating to the communications channels associated with these scenarios, there are many additional problems that have received relatively little attention. These include issues of how environmental and speaker robustness algorithms are implemented in mobile domains and how multiple ASR channels can be implemented more efficiently in multi-user deployments. Preliminary results are summarized showing the effect of user specific unsupervised adaptation and normalization algorithms on ASR performance in mobile domains. Results are also presented demonstrating the efficiencies that are obtainable from using intelligent algorithms for assigning ASR decoders to computation servers in multi-user deployments.
