We prepared ZnS thin films by photochemical deposition (PCD) using continuous and pulsed illumination. The aqueous solution containing ZnSO/sub 4/, Na/sub 2/S/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ was illuminated with light from a high-pressure mercury lamp. When the illumination was continuous, the deposited film was black and not transparent. But pulsed illumination made the deposited film white and transparent. And the film deposited by pulsed illumination has photosensitivity.

The application of principal component analysis and cluster analysis (PCA-CA) using heart rate variability (HRV) parameters to identify the most severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) subjects in a mixture of normal and COPD population is discussed. These parameters were obtained from real physiological data and cross-spectral analysis (i.e. the coherence and partial coherence between heart rate, blood pressure and respiration signals). Results demonstrated that these two groups could be differentiated with greater than 99.0% accuracy. Furthermore, differences on the same HRV parameters between all four severity levels of COPD subjects were also investigated. These groups were differentiated with over 88.0% accuracy. In analyzing the studied data of the COPD population, the technique correctly characterized 8.5% of COPD group as severe COPD. It was concluded that the PCA-CA technique identified the combination of parameters that can classify disease severity (COPD) as well as differences between normal and COPD subjects in a mixed population. The PCA-CA technique could perhaps also be used to classify other diseases non-invasively.

This work analyzes the behaviour of wound-cores losses in distribution transformers, as a function of the design parameters of the transformer joint configuration. The configuration used in this paper is called step-lap joint. This analysis is carried out experimentally as well as by using the finite element method. In this research, the effect of the following factors is considered: (a) overlap length and (b) number of laminations per step or group. The design aspects of the wound core are also discussed.

In many applications the image registration task turns out to be a fundamental prerequisite for any further processing and analysis. In the proposed paper a new efficient technique is presented, appropriate for registering images which are translated and rotated versions of a reference image. The technique consists of two main parts: an efficiently implemented prewhitening part, and an iterative part which yields the unknown displacements after a few iterations. The cross-correlation operations involved in the iterative part are performed efficiently via a new scheme based on a proper partitioning of the images and the use of the FFT. Note that this efficient scheme is also applicable to the conventional spatial cross-correlation method. The new registration technique exhibits a superior performance as compared to the conventional cross-correlation method.
