This paper exploits the signal algebraic structure on the uplink of OFDMA system adopting interleaved carrier assignment scheme for synchronization and user separation. We first propose a subspace based method to estimate multiple user CFO deterministically using only one OFDMA block. Next, we derive a MMSE filter which can extract the ideal received signal waveform of all users individually to implement user separation and frequency synchronization at the same time. Time synchronization is carried out on single user's signal. The performance of the proposed algorithms is evaluated by simulations.

In this paper we present a new approach for clustering data. The clustering metric used is the normalized cross-correlation, also known as similarity, instead of the traditionally used Euclidean distance. The main advantage of this metric is that it depends on the signal shape rather than its amplitude. Under an assumption of an exponential probability model that has several desirable properties, the expectation-maximization (EM) framework is used to derive two iterative clustering algorithms. Numerical experiments are presented using simulated data in a dynamic positron emission topography study of the brain. Initial results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves better performance than several existing clustering methods.

The electron delay time associated with the electron propagation across the FET gate barrier layer under high positive gate bias is expected to induce a dynamic negative differential conductance and enhance the growth of plasma waves in the channel. This dynamic negative conductance is related to the phase shift between the current and voltage waveforms caused by the electron time delay during the electron tunneling through the gate barrier. We present experimental investigations of the plasma wave detector responsivity at 200 GHz and 600 GHz radiation for long channel AlGaAs/GaAs and AlGaInN/GaN based HEMTs at 8 K and 300 K. The appearance of detector response correlated with an increase of the injected gate current under the forward gate bias is reported for both types of the investigated devices. Our results confirm that a large gate current can enhance the excitation of plasma waves.

Currently, there is no standard approach for evaluating the intracranial encephalographic signals for seizure prediction. This study evaluates the IEEG signals by applying a systematic approach to feature selection, classification and validation to predict seizures. After preprocessing and processing, a genetic algorithm selects reasonable features off-line from a preselected group of features to serve as inputs to the classifier based feature selection process. A probabilistic neural network is used to select the optimal feature vector using a reed forward sequential approach on the training data followed by classification. A study of four patients resulted in a 62.5% average probability of prediction and a block false positive rate of 0.2775 false positive predictions per hour.

Shared or networked virtual environments are one of the most promising uses of the virtual reality technology. While a lot of research has been done in the area of multi-user virtual environments corresponding to the sharing of events very few research has been done on specific services and functionality. However both the requirements and the kind of the offered services affect significantly the design of a system. In this paper we present the main issues in the design of a platform to support the distant education process using networked virtual environments. We also introduce the term Educational Virtual Environments and their basic requirements. According to these requirements of the educational virtual environments we propose both a suitable architecture and a protocol for the interaction between the components of this architecture.

In this paper we present C2P, a new clustering algorithm for large spatial databases, which exploits spatial access methods for the determination of closest pairs. Several extensions are presented for scalable clustering in large databases that contain clusters of various shapes and outliers. Due to its characteristics, the proposed algorithm attains the advantages of hierarchical clustering and graphtheoretic algorithms providing both efficiency and quality of clustering result. The superiority of C2P is verified both with analytical and experimental results.

Environmental applications share common features that make them distinct from typical applications of other areas of applied computer science. This fact has lead during the last years to the development of Environmental informatics, a novel specialty of Applied informatics, which studies specific problems related with the application of computer science techniques in environmental problems. In environmental applications often many different, non homogeneous information sources can be found, such as text data e.g. environmental legislation or research projects results, measurement data from monitoring networks, structural data on chemical substances, satellite data etc. In particular, environmental data is often geographically coded, i.e. information is attached to a particular point or region in space. Secondly, some of the data objects are multidimensional and have to be represented by means of complex geometric objects (polygons or curves).
