The spectral response, luminance, and outgassing characteristics of new, thin-film Ce-activated SrGa₂S₄ phosphors for application in field-emission flat-panel displays are presented. The tested phosphor materials are prepared using molecular beam epitaxy. The sample screens are tested with e-beam excitation at currents up to 50 μA within the 200-2000 V (i.e., "low-voltage") and 3-8 kV (i.e., "medium-voltage") ranges. The spectral coordinates are compared to those of commercial low-voltage phosphors. Phosphor outgassing, as a function of time, is measured with a residual gas analyzer at a fixed 50-μA beam current in the low-voltage range. We find that levels of outgassing stabilize to low values within the first hour of excitation. The desorption rates measured from thin films are compared to previously studied desorption parameters for powder phosphor layers.

Forecasting financial markets has attracted the interest of neural network researchers. It is a challenging problem, where obtaining a 0.5+e accuracy is an achievement. Researchers applied neural networks successfully to the problems of forecasting currencies, bonds, the futures markets, real estate, and the stock market. In this paper we develop a method for forecasting the stock market. We use novel aspects, in the sense that we base the forecast on fundamental company information, such as earnings per share, price earnings ratio, dividends, sales, profit margin, etc. These indicators and ratios thereof, especially earnings related indicators, are the prime movers of a stock price. The preliminary results we obtain are very promising.

In this paper, XBONE, a hybrid medical expert system that supports diagnosis of bone diseases is presented. Diagnosis is based on various patient data and is performed in two stages. In the early stage, diagnosis is based on demographic and clinical data of the patient, whereas in the late stage it is mainly based on nuclear medicine image data. Knowledge is represented via an integrated formalism that combines production rules and the Adaline artificial neural unit. Each condition of a rule is assigned a number, called its significance factor, representing its significance in drawing the conclusion of the rule. This results in better representation, reduction of the knowledge base size and gives the system learning capabilities. © 1997, The authors.

Proposes a powerful model, called MITOS (Model for Intelligent Three-dimensional Object Support) for the intelligent support of spatial data consisting of irregular 3D objects and their interrelations. The core novelty of the proposed data model lies in its delicate way of representing the (complicated) world of 3D objects in order to reduce its complexity. MITOS achieves this by discretizing the space, using mostly topological notions and finite sets, and by recalling geometry only when needed. On the other hand, MITOS's objects are effectively handled by the MITOS language, which is an integration of an object-oriented programming language and a logic-based one.

This paper presents a novel method for designing TSC m-out-of-n code checkers taking into account a realistic fault model including stuck-at, transistor stuck-on, transistor stuck-open, resistive bridging faults and breaks. The proposed design method is the first method in the open literature that takes into account a realistic fault model and can be applied for all practical values of m and n. Apart from the above the proposed checkers are very compact and very fast. Another benefit of the proposed TSC checkers is that all faults are tested by single pattern tests thus the probability of achieving the TSC goal is greater than in checkers requiring two-pattern tests.

A new initialization scheme for the Remez exchange algorithm is proposed. More specifically, the solution of the well known "don't care" filter design method is proposed as a new efficient initialization scheme for the Remez algorithm. Our proposal is motivated by the fact that the "don't care" least squares optimum solution satisfies one of the two basic conditions that are sufficient for obtaining the L/sub /spl infin// optimal solution according to the alternation theorem and at the same time it adequately approximates the second one. Because of these properties we have a significant speed up of the convergence of the Remez exchange algorithm to the L/sub /spl infin// optimum solution.

The most important goal in hard real-time systems is to guarantee that all timing constraints are satisfied. Even though object-based techniques (which contain reusable software components) are used to manage the complexity in the software development process of such systems, execution efficiency may have to be sacrificed, due to the large number of procedure calls and contention for accessing software components. These issues are addressed by the following parallelizing techniques: converting potentially inefficient procedure calls to a source of concurrency via asynchronous remote procedure calls (ARPC); and replicating (or cloning) software components to reduce the contention. The existing object-based scheduling algorithms construct an initial schedule and apply incremental parallelization techniques to modify the initial schedule until a feasible schedule is generated. These algorithms are applicable for scheduling only multiple independent tasks. This paper describes a pre-run-time scheduling algorithm for a set of periodic object-based tasks having precedence constraints among them. The algorithm employs parallelism exploitation techniques to guarantee timeliness in almost fully predictable environments such as factory automation, aerospace, and avionics. It allocates the components of object-based periodic tasks to the sites of a distributed system based on a clustering heuristic which takes into account the ARPC parallelism and load balancing, and schedules them on respective sites.

Software testability is becoming an important factor to be considered during software development and assessment, especially for critical software. We give software testability, previously defined by Voas, a new model and measurement which is done before random black-box testing with respect to a particular input distribution. We also compare our measurement results with the results simulated according to Voas's model. It showed that our rough testability estimate provides enough information and will be used as guidelines for software development.

Finite-element mesh generation using self-organizing neural networks

Neural networks are applied to the problem of mesh placement for the finite-element method. When the finite-element method is used to numerically solve a partial differential equation with boundary conditions over a domain, the domain must be divided into "elements." The precise placement of the nodes of the elements has a major affect on the accuracy of the numeric method. In this paper the self-organizing algorithm of Kohonen is adapted to solve the problem of automatically assigning (in a near-optimal way) coordinates from a two-dimensional domain to a given topologic grid (or mesh) of nodes in order to apply the finite-element method effectively when solving a partial differential equation with boundary conditions over that domain. One novelty of the method is the interweaving of versions of the Kohonen algorithm in different dimensions simultaneously in order to handle the boundary of the domain properly. Our method allows for the use of arbitrary types of two-dimensional elements (in particular, quadrilaterals or mixed shapes as opposed to just triangles) and for varying desired densities over the domain. (Thus more elements can be placed automatically near "areas of interest.") The methods and experiments developed here are for two-dimensional domains but seem naturally extendible to higher-dimensional problems. The method uses a mixture of both one- and two-dimensional versions of the Kohonen algorithm, with an improvement suggested by Tabakman and Exman, and further adapted to the particular problem here. Experimental results comparing this algorithm with a well-known two-dimensional grid-generating system (PLTMG) are presented. © 1997 Microcomputers in Civil engineering.
