Knowledge of whole heart anatomy is a prerequisite for many clinical applications. Whole heart segmentation (WHS), which delineates substructures of the heart, can be very valuable for modeling and analysis of the anatomy and functions of the heart. However, automating this segmentation can be arduous due to the large variation of the heart shape, and different image qualities of the clinical data. To achieve this goal, a set of training data is generally needed for constructing priors or for training. In addition, it is difficult to perform comparisons between different methods, largely due to differences in the datasets and evaluation metrics used. This manuscript presents the methodologies and evaluation results for the WHS algorithms selected from the submissions to the Multi-Modality Whole Heart Segmentation (MM-WHS) challenge, in conjunction with MICCAI 2017. The challenge provides 120 three-dimensional cardiac images covering the whole heart, including 60 CT and 60 MRI volumes, all acquired in clinical environments with manual delineation. Ten algorithms for CT data and eleven algorithms for MRI data, submitted from twelve groups, have been evaluated. The results show that many of the deep learning (DL) based methods achieved high accuracy, even though the number of training datasets were limited. A number of them also reported poor results in the blinded evaluation, probably due to overfitting in their training. The conventional algorithms, mainly based on multi-atlas segmentation, demonstrated robust and stable performance, even though the accuracy is not as good as the best DL method in CT segmentation. The challenge, including provision of the annotated training data and the blinded evaluation for submitted algorithms on the test data, continues as an ongoing benchmarking resource via its homepage (***/zhuangxiahai/0/mmwhs/). As long-term EEG recordings are becoming more and more frequent in clinical practice, the volume of EEG data that require annotation by clinical experts is growing exponentially, highlighting the need for automated epileptic seizure detection systems. Supervised methodologies based on machine learning techniques have been proposed as a solution, but they require annotated EEG data from multiple patients for training, while unsupervised methodologies, which do not have such limitations, are scarce in the literature. Thus, an unsupervised seizure detection methodology is developed to offer high seizure detection performance with substantial reduction in the time and effort required to inspect large volumes of EEG signals. The ictal rhythmical activity is detected by analyzing the spectral information of each EEG channel independently in order to find intensive accumulation of signal energy over the fundamental delta, theta and alpha frequency bands. The ictal rhythmical activity that is expressed during a seizure is detected using a set of four simple seizure detection conditions. The proposed methodology is validated using the public CHB-MIT EEG database, and the results suggest that an average sensitivity of 95.1% can be obtained with a false detection rate of 10.13 FP/h, while 95% of the each patient's EEG recordings is automatically rejected as non-ictal. © 2018 IEEE.

Power network resilience is increasingly dependent on communication networks. Besides traditional generation, power networks need to accommodate increasingly high penetration levels of dispersed micro generation, mostly based on renewable sources, and increasing and challenging demand, such as electric vehicles. At the same time the deployment of enabling technologies throughout the power grid makes available new demand resources and storage capacity. These resources have to be jointly managed for efficient and resilient o peration. Therefore a resilient communication network is mandatory for the smart control of these different resources. Communication networks in turn also rely on the power networks in spite of some power backup that they may have. This interdependence is especially critical in bad weather conditions where both networks can be severely affected, even more when they strongly depend on each other. This work describes ongoing research related with the interdependence between both networks regarding resilience, cascading failure effects, applicable models and simulation techniques. © VDE VERLAG GMBH - Berlin - Offenbach.

Among different components of urban mobility, urban freight transport is usually considered as the least sustainable. Limited traffic infrastructures and increasing demands in dense urban regions lead to frequent delivery runs with smaller freight vehicles. This increases the traffic in urban areas and has negative impacts upon the quality of life in urban populations. Data driven optimizations are essential to better utilize existing urban transport infrastructures and to reduce the negative effects of freight deliveries for the cities. However, there is limited work and data driven research on urban delivery areas and freight transportation networks. In this paper, we collect and analyse data on urban freight deliveries and parking areas towards an optimized urban freight transportation system. Using a new check-in based mobile parking system for freight vehicles, we aim to understand and optimize freight distribution processes. We explore the relationship between areas' availability patterns and underlying traffic behaviour in order to understand the trends in urban freight transport. By applying the detected patterns we predict the availabilities of loading/unloading areas, and thus open up new possibilities for delivery route planning and better managing of freight transport infrastructures.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

Road map extraction is considered an essential task in GIS as its results are the basis of location-based applications in various domains. Examples include GPS navigation on cell phone, delivery route optimization and planning, tourist attraction locator, and location-based marketing. Satellite imagery, one of the big spatial data sources, is used in this research - though other types of remotely-sensed images can also be applied, such as aerial photographs from aircrafts, UAVs or drones. Despite several methods and techniques proposed and accompanied with different performance criteria, the focus was mainly on the accuracy aspect rather than the completeness of the result sets. That is, the results were said to be satisfactory if it met a certain accuracy criterion associated with some benchmark data sets, regardless of whether all results were retrieved. In many cases; however, both accuracy and completeness are equally important. In this paper, we enhance the result accuracy by incorporating connected component analysis into the method as well as the completeness performance by utilizing an ecology concept, called Landscape Metrics, which describes spatial characteristics, patterns, and correlations of areas/patches through different indices. Two types of metrics are used: shape metrics and isolation metrics. The performance is evaluated based on four criteria: precision, recall, quality, and F1 scores. The results show that more than 90% of performance is achieved in all four criteria.

The inclusive top-quark-pair production cross section σtt¯ and its ratio to the Z-boson production cross section have been measured in proton–proton collisions at s=13.6 TeV, using 29 fb−1 of data collected in ...

The inclusive top-quark-pair production cross section σ_tt¯ and its ratio to the Z-boson production cross section have been measured in proton–proton collisions at s=13.6 TeV, using 29 fb⁻¹ of data collected in 2022 with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Using events with an opposite-charge electron-muon pair and b-tagged jets, and assuming Standard Model decays, the top-quark-pair production cross section is measured to be σ_tt¯=850±3(stat.)±18(syst.)±20(lumi.) pb. The ratio of the tt¯ and the Z-boson production cross sections is also measured, where the Z-boson contribution is determined for inclusive e⁺e⁻ and μ⁺μ⁻ events in a fiducial phase space. The relative uncertainty on the ratio is reduced compared to the tt¯ cross section, thanks to the cancellation of several systematic uncertainties. The result for the ratio, R_tt¯/Z=1.145±0.003(stat.)±0.021(syst.)±0.002(lumi.) is consistent with the Standard Model prediction using the PDF4LHC21 PDF set. © 2023 The Author(s)

Mobility of people and goods in urban environments raises several quality and sustainability concerns. While ICTs have established the ground for developing intelligent transport services, their effective use for supporting cleaner urban mobility still represents a major research challenge. The eCOMPASS research project addressed this challenge through introducing new mobility concepts and establishing a methodological framework for route planning optimization, delivering a comprehensive set of innovative tools and services for end-users to enable eco-awareness in urban transport. eCOMPASS innovative tools are based on new algorithmic technology concerning tools and methods for vehicle routing (cars and vehicle fleets) and multimodal human mobility for city dwellers and tourists. eCOMPASS involved a generic architecture that considered all types and scenarios of human and goods mobility in urban environments minimizing their environmental impact. In this work, we report on the main scientific innovations and end-products of eCOMPASS for vehicle routing, including car route planning and vehicle fleets.
