Understanding how services operate as part of large scale global networks, the related risks and gains of different network structures and their dynamics is becoming increasingly critical for society. Our vision and research agenda focuses on the particularly challenging task of building, analyzing, and reasoning about global service networks. This paper explains how Service Network Analysis (SNA) can be used to study and optimize the provisioning of complex services modeled as Open Semantic Service Networks (OSSN), a computer-understandable digital structure which represents connected and dependent services.

Automated multi-contrast brain pathological area extraction from 2D MR images

The aim of this work is to propose the fully automated pathological area extraction from multi-parametric 2D MR images of brain. The proposed method is based on multi-resolution symmetry analysis and automatic thresholding. The proposed algorithm first detects the presence of pathology and then starts its extraction. T2 images are used for the presence detection and the multi-contrast MRI is used for the extraction, concretely T2 and FLAIR images. The extraction is based on thresholding, where Otsu's algorithm is used for the automatic determination of the threshold. Since the method is based on symmetry, it works for both axial and coronal planes. In both these planes of healthy brain, the approximate left-right symmetry exists and it is used as the prior knowledge for searching the approximate pathology location. It is assumed that this area is not located symmetrically in both hemispheres, which is met in most cases. The detection algorithm was tested on 203 T2-weighted images and reached the true positive rate of 87.52% and true negative rate of 93.14%. The extraction algorithm was tested on 357 axial and 443 coronal real images from publicly available BRATS databases containing 3D volumes brain tumor patients. The results were evaluated by Dice Coefficient (axial: 0.85 ± 0.11, coronal 0.82 ± 0.18) and by Accuracy (axial: 0.96 ± 0.05, coronal 0.94 ± 0.09). © 2015 Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

The advances in wireless networks have encouraged the use of mobile devices in everyday life. However, one of the main problems of these devices is the limited amount of energy they have available to use in order to function and the extended energy consumption of wireless adapters. A lot of research has been done to reduce the amount of energy spent on wireless communications. On the other hand, the extended use of wireless networks causes interference problems in communications, which affect the overall performance of each network. The purpose of this work is to provide a mechanism, which can reduce the power consumption on the station side and increase the mobile devices' operation time, and in combination with a rate adaptation mechanism on the access point side, improve the overall performance of the network.

Biomedical knowledge stored in the web is increasing significantly as most of the biomedical research papers are published online. Biomedical entity extraction is a crucial procedure for efficient text analysis and retrieval. PubMed is a very popular indexing engine, concerning life sciences and biomedical research. Being a free database, it accesses primarily the MEDLINE database of references and abstracts on life sciences and biomedical topics. In this work, we propose a metasearch engine over PubMed, which classifies PubMed results according to their specific topic and the extracted Biomedical entities. This method helps researchers to browse and search in the retrieved results. In order to provide more accurate clustering results, we utilize the biomedical ontology, named MeSH as well as RxNorm which is a tool for supporting semantic interoperation between drug terminologies and pharmacy knowledge base systems. Finally, we embed the proposed methodology in an online system. © 2014 IEEE.

Different types of e-assessment systems that are recognized at universities and based on the campus wireless have been developed. These systems help the students to use their Mobile Phones as learning media to access the information more easily from anywhere and at anytime. Seppala and Alamaki developed a mobile learning project for teacher training. Their study compared the effectiveness of internet, face-to-face and mobile based instructions. Al Masri has proposed a study to compare the effective strategy in paper-based assessment with mobile-based assessment for assessing university students in English literature. It has been found that students gained better scores in mobile phone-based test than in paper-based test. This paper aims to determine and measure the effects of mobile-based assessments on the perception, achievement levels and performance of the students in internet-assisted courses. The main functionalities and features of this paper are: Knowledge evaluation, automatic generation of exams, exam grading, communication, course management, and questions-bank database.

The demand-side energy management of microgrids comprising of buildings of heterogeneous nature (residential, commercial, industrial, etc.) and thus exhibiting heterogeneous occupancy pattern, requires the development of appropriate energy management systems (EMSs) that can integrate the maximum exploitation of the distributed energy resources like photovoltaic panels with the thermal comfort of the occupants. This paper presents a simulation-based optimization approach for the design of an EMS in grid-connected photovoltaic-equipped microgrids with heterogeneous buildings and occupancy schedules. The EMS optimizes a multi-objective criterion that takes into account both the energy cost and the thermal comfort of the aggregate microgrid. A three-building microgrid test case is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach: comparisons with alternative rule-based and optimization-based EMSs show that the proposed EMS strategy exploits the occupancy information to automatically change the energy demand of each building, resulting in improved energy cost and thermal comfort.

In a world of pervasive computing, embedded systems can be found in a wide range of products and are employed in various heterogeneous domains. The abovementioned devices often need to access, store, manipulate and/or communicate sensitive or even critical information, making the security of their resources and services an important concern in their design process. These issues are further exacerbated by the resource-constrained nature of the devices, in conjunction with the ever-present need for smaller size and lower production costs. This paper aims to provide an overview of the challenges in designing secure embedded systems, covering both node hardware and software issues, as well as relevant network protocols and cryptographic algorithms. Moreover, recent advances in the field are identified, highlighting opportunities for future research.

Over the recent past years research effort has been dedicated towards addressing a generic solution in System of Systems (SoS) control problems. Two are the main obstacles that have to be bypassed in such problem cases, especially in real life applications, rendering the optimization problem into a complicated/challenging one: (i) modelling/simulation tools are usually used in order to construct an as-close-as-possible to reality accurate model, whose construction though requires a considerable amount of time and effort and (ii) furthermore, standard control system designs when applied to SoS exhibit poor performance as they are required to handle very high-dimensional problems. In this paper, we present a first attempt towards addressing these issues. More precisely, a new adaptive optimal control methodology is presented and evaluated. The main attributes of the proposed control methodology is its local nature with minimum requirements for coordination between the constituent system of the SoS and its model-free nature.
