Over the recent past years research effort has been dedicated towards addressing a generic solution in System of Systems (SoS) control problems. Two are the main obstacles that have to be bypassed in such problem cases, especially in real life applications, rendering the optimization problem into a complicated/challenging one: (i) modelling/simulation tools are usually used in order to construct an as-close-as-possible to reality accurate model, whose construction though requires a considerable amount of time and effort and (ii) furthermore, standard control system designs when applied to SoS exhibit poor performance as they are required to handle very high-dimensional problems. In this paper, we present a first attempt towards addressing these issues. More precisely, a new adaptive optimal control methodology is presented and evaluated. The main attributes of the proposed control methodology is its local nature with minimum requirements for coordination between the constituent system of the SoS and its model-free nature.

This Letter presents a search for new resonances with mass larger than 250 GeV, decaying to a Z boson and a photon. The dataset consists of an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb⁻¹ of pp collisions collected at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The Z bosons are identified through their decays either to charged, light, lepton pairs (e⁺e⁻, μ⁺μ⁻) or to hadrons. The data are found to be consistent with the expected background in the whole mass range investigated and upper limits are set on the production cross section times decay branching ratio to Zγ of a narrow scalar boson with mass between 250 GeV and 2.75 TeV. © 2016 The Author(s)

This work proposes a policy iteration procedure for the synthesis of optimal and globally stabilizing control policies for Linear Time Invariant (LTI) Asymptotically Null-controllable with Bounded Inputs (ANCBI) systems. This class includes systems with eigenvalues on the imaginary axis (possibly repeated) but no pole with positive real part. The proposed policy iteration relies on a class of piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions which is non-differentiable, but continuous, and polynomial in both the state and the deadzone functions of the input signals. The second step of the policy iteration is based on a piecewise control policy improvement. An important aspect of the proposed piecewise policy is that at each step of the iteration the computed policy is globally stabilizing and the existence of an improving value function is guaranteed as well. The solution to the inequalities which is required to hold at each step of the policy iteration, is obtained by solving Sum-of-Squares Programs (SOSP) that can be efficiently implemented with semidefinite programming (SDP) solvers.

Biomedical knowledge stored in the web is increasing significantly as most of the biomedical research papers are published online. Biomedical entity extraction is a crucial procedure for efficient text analysis and retrieval. PubMed is a very popular indexing engine, concerning life sciences and biomedical research. Being a free database, it accesses primarily the MEDLINE database of references and abstracts on life sciences and biomedical topics. In this work, we propose a metasearch engine over PubMed, which classifies PubMed results according to their specific topic and the extracted Biomedical entities. This method helps researchers to browse and search in the retrieved results. In order to provide more accurate clustering results, we utilize the biomedical ontology, named MeSH as well as RxNorm which is a tool for supporting semantic interoperation between drug terminologies and pharmacy knowledge base systems. Finally, we embed the proposed methodology in an online system.

This paper presents a methodology for model-based fault detection and diagnosis underpinned by Modelica models and using a qualitative approach to diagnosis, which has been applied to diagnosis of an air handling unit based on data recorded by a building management system. Localization of sources of brain electrical activity from electroencephalographic and magnetoencephalographic recordings is an ill-posed inverse problem. Therefore, the best one can hope for is to derive a source localization method which is guaranteed to find sources belonging to the set of possible solutions to this problem. Recently, a few methods with this property have been proposed as a non-trivial generalizations of the classical neural activity index based on the linearly constrained minimum-variance (LCMV) spatial filtering technique. In this paper we propose a family of reduced-rank activity indices achieving maximum value when evaluated at true source locations for uncorrelated dipole sources and any nonzero rank constraint. This fact shows in particular that this key property is not confined to a selected few activity indices. We present a series of numerical simulations evaluating localization performance of the proposed activity indices. We also give an overview of areas of future research which should be considered as an extension of the results of this paper. In particular, we discuss how new families of activity indices can be derived based on the proposed technique. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Large scale distributed agent-based simulations run on several computing units (e.g., virtual machines in the Cloud, nodes in a supercomputer). Classically, these systems try to (re-)load-balance the nodes as overloaded nodes slow down the *** another challenge in large scale distributed simulations is that the overall load evolves. In this paper we leverage on commodity computing to adapt resource provisioning (number of computing units) to the load during the execution of the simulation. We also propose an asynchronous migration mechanism that migrate workload between computing nodes efficiently when nodes wait for synchronisation barriers to happen. We validate our implementation on a scenario simulating one day of vehicular traffic in Tokyo, running on 2 to 8 machines depending on the demand. Our evaluation shows a 26% reduction in data migration time compared to a naive migration approach between computing units. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Recently, a spectrum resource shortage problem has been aggravated in a cellular system due to growth of service or application business based on high-speed and high-capacity communication. To solve this problem, data traffic offloading to “white-spaces” has been promoted worldwide. In particular, white-spaces in the TV band (TVWS, TV White-spaces) has attracted attentions for securing more channels to existing communication systems and rules for a secondary use of the TVWS have been established in the USA, the UK, Japan, etc. NICT has researched and developed TVWS communication systems that consist of a white-space database, a network manager and some prototyped TV band devices based on WLAN systems including the IEEE802.11af draft standard, however, TV band devices based on current cellular systems are also necessary for further investigation of cellular traffic offloading to the TVWS. In this study, TDD/FDD dual mode LTE base station and terminal adaptor utilizing TVWS are prototyped by applying the UHF converter technology and RF performance is characterized.

Craniosynostosis, a disorder in which one or more fibrous joints of the skull fuse prematurely, causes skull malformation and may be associated with increased intracranial pressure and developmental delays. In order to perform medical research studies that relate phenotypic abnormalities to outcomes such as cognitive ability or results of surgery, biomedical researchers need an automated methodology for quantifying the degree of abnormality of the disorder. This paper addresses that need by proposing a set of features derived from CT scans of the skull that can be used for this purpose. A thorough set of experiments is used to evaluate the features as compared to two human craniofacial experts in a ranking evaluation.

Craniosynostosis, a disorder in which one or more fibrous joints of the skull fuse prematurely, causes skull deformity and is associated with increased intracranial pressure and developmental delays. Although clinicians can easily diagnose craniosynostosis and can classify its type, being able to quantify the condition is an important problem in craniofacial research. While several papers have attempted this quantification through statistical models, the methods have not been intuitive to biomedical researchers and clinicians who want to use them. The goal of this work was to develop a general platform upon which new quantification measures could be developed and tested. The features reported in this paper were developed as basic shape measures, both single-valued and vector-valued, that are extracted from a single plane projection of the 3D skull. This technique allows us to process images that would otherwise be eliminated in previous systems due to poor resolution, noise or imperfections on their CT scans. We test our new features on classification tasks and also compare their performance to previous research. In spite of its simplicity, the classification accuracy of our new features is significantly higher than previous results on head CT scan data from the same research studies.
