Applying an OO Modeling Methodology for the Design,Implementation and Testing of a Smart Phone Application

Smart phone application development is a very active field for both research and the market domain. This paper investigates the application of ICONIX, a use case driven, object-oriented (OO) analysis and design methodology, for the development of a smart phone personal assistant. It also studies the integration of hand-held haptic devices in daily work activities by evaluating the usability of the application using as basis test scenarios deriving from the identified use cases. The Tennis Coaching Assistant (TCA) is an iPhone application that provides management and scheduling capabilities for tennis coaches and allows a comprehensive overview of the execution of on-court drills and coaching programs. The use of ICONIX made analysis and design keep a sharp focus on user requirements, assured design and coding documentation, fostered an excellent communication among all participants and stake holders and provided the crucial advantage of high reusability in case of implementing the same application for additional smart phone platforms. The paper also describes the usability evaluation methodology applied and documents the results focusing on interaction difficulties and practical obstacles reported by the users as well as suggestions for future versions of the application, which generally received quite positive feedback.

It is often discussed that the fourth methodology for science research is "informatics". The first methodology is a theoretic approach, the second one is observation and/or experiment, and the third one is computer simulation. informatics is a new methodology for data intensive science, which is a new concept based on the fact that most scientific data are digitalized and the amount of data is huge. The facilities to support informatics are cloud systems. Herein we propose a cloud system especially designed for science. The basic concepts, design, resources, implementation, and applications of the NICT science cloud are discussed.

Learning of fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) is one of the most useful characteristics which have a high impact on modeling and inference capabilities of them. The learning approaches for FCMs are concentrated on learning the connection matrix, based either on expert intervention and/or on the available historical data. Most learning approaches for FCMs are Hebbian-based and evolutionary-based algorithms. A new learning algorithm for FCMs is proposed in this research work, inheriting the main aspects of the bagging approach which is an ensemble based learning approach. The FCM nonlinear Hebbian learning (NHL) algorithm enhanced by the bagging technique is investigated contributing to an approach where the model is trained using NHL algorithm as a base learner classifier. This work is inspired from the neural networks ensembles and it is used to learn the FCM ensembles produced by the NHL exploiting better classification accuracies. © 2012 Springer-Verlag .

The dynamic establishment of shared information (e.g. secret key) between two entities is particularly important in networks with no pre-determined structure such as wireless sensor networks (and in general wireless mobile ad-hoc networks). In such networks, nodes establish and terminate communication sessions dynamically with other nodes which may have never been encountered before, in order to somehow exchange information which will enable them to subsequently communicate in a secure manner. In this paper we give and theoretically analyze a series of protocols that enables two entities that have never encountered each other before to establish a shared piece of information for use as a key in setting up a secure communication session with the aid of a shared key encryption algorithm. These protocols do not require previous pre-distribution of candidate keys or some other piece of information of specialized form except a small seed value, from which the two entities can produce arbitrarily long strings with many similarities. © 2012 ICST institute for computer Science, Social informatics and Telecommunications engineering.

This paper presents human-robot communication for a monitoring support system in an Intelligent Space. An Intelligent Space (iSpace) is a space in which many intelligent devices are installed to observe the user's environment. In this paper, we apply the iSpace observation function to a monitoring system used for maintaining the safety of elderly persons receiving home-care support. In addition, we use a mobile robot as a tool to deliver monitoring results to care assistants. We focus on an ethological approach for designing robot behaviors for human-robot communication. The implementation of these robot behaviors based on an ethological approach, and the results of an experiment conducted to evaluate these behaviors, are then presented. © 2012 IFAC.

Past research has proposed the usage of assisting cells with Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) over a Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) to increase the the Spectral Efficiency (SE) of LTE. In this paper we propose and investigate a method for optimizing the power consumption of the network while retaining an acceptable SE for most users. We design an algorithm that makes use of genetic optimization and analytical estimation of the SE. The algorithm is implemented in a novel simulation tool that allows experimentation over various user distributions and LTE deployments similar to the real-world ones. This simulation tool estimates the SE of each user and is able to optimize the network deployment by adjusting the individual transmission power levels for each cell.

Motion segmentation for articulated objects is an important topic of research. Yet such a segmentation should be as free as possible from underlying assumptions so as to fit general scenes and objects. In this paper we demonstrate an algorithm for articulated motion segmentation of 3D point clouds, free of any assumptions on the underlying model and yet firmly set in a well-defined variational framework. Results on scanned images show the generality of the proposed technique and its robustness to scanning artifacts and noise. © The Eurographics Association 2012.

A recently developed control scheme for approximately optimal control of nonlinear systems is the so-called Convex Control Design (ConvCD) methodology, that transforms the control problem of generic nonlinear systems into a convex optimization problem. The ConvCD approach constructs a polynomial controller approximating the optimal control law: such design does not provide a scalable controller as it requires the use of a polynomial controller, which is not scalable, especially in large-scale applications. This problem is overcome in this paper by modifying the ConvCD formulation so that the optimal control law is approximated with a Multi-Controller with Mixing: that is, the polynomial controller is substituted by linear control elements plus mixing signals that are responsible for smoothly switching from one linear element to another. The stability properties of the Multi-Controller with Mixing are analyzed and an iterative approach is proposed to solve the resulting optimization problem. The resulting procedure aims at the development of a scalable and modular architecture for nonlinear systems, in order to allow for easier implementation and re-configurability. A numerical example is used to show the effectiveness of the method.

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has introduced the evolved Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (e-MBMS) feature for cellular systems as an evolution to the existing MBMS service. To support e-MBMS in Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems, 3GPP recommends the use of Point-to-Multipoint (PTM) transmissions and MBMS over a Single Frequency Network (MBSFN). MBSFN is a new feature where a time-synchronized common waveform is transmitted from multiple cells. In this paper we investigate the provision of MBMS service over a combination of MBSFN and PTM transmission methods. A cost analysis of the MBMS service is presented based on the transmission cost over all the interfaces and nodes of the LTE architecture. We evaluate the performance of this transmission scheme from telecommunication cost perspective and we compare it with other transmission schemes. The performance evaluation has been performed with the aid of a new simulation tool that estimates the cost for the MBMS provision under different network topologies, MBSFN deployments and user distributions. © 2011 IEEE.
