Fuzzy watershed algorithm: An enhanced algorithm for 2D gel electrophoresis image segmentation

An important issue in the analysis of two-dimensional electrophoresis images is the detection and quantification of protein spots. The main challenges in the segmentation of 2DGE images are to separate overlapping protein spots correctly and to find the abundance of weak protein spots. To enable comparison of protein patterns between different samples, it is necessary to match the patterns so that homologous spots are identified. In this paper, we describe a new robust technique to segment and model the different spots present in the gels. The Watershed segmentation algorithm is modified to handle the problem of over segmentation by initially partitioning the image to mosaic regions using the composition of fuzzy relations. The experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to overcome the over segmentation problem associated with the available algorithm. We also use a wavelet denoising function to enhance the quality of the segmented image. The parameters of the wavelet function are obtained using the Genetic Algorithm search technique. The results of using the denoising function before the proposed Fuzzy Watershed segmentation algorithm is very promising as they are better than those without denoising. © 2012 International Journal of computer Science Issues.

Survivable routing serves as a key role in connection-oriented communication networks for achieving desired service availability for each connection. This is particularly critical for the success of all-optical mesh networks where each lightpath carries a huge amount of data. Currently, 1 + 1 dedicated path protection appears to be the most widely deployed network resilience mechanism because it offers instantaneous recovery from network failures. However, 1 + 1 protection consumes almost twice as much capacity as required, which imposes a stringent constraint on network resource utilization. In addition, finding an SRLG-disjoint path is essential for 1 + 1 protection, which is nonetheless subject to non-trivial computation complexity and may fail in some SRLG scenarios. To address these problems, we introduce a novel framework of 1 + 1 protection, called Generalized Dedicated Protection (GDP), for achieving instantaneous recovery from any SRLG failure event. It is demonstrated, that finding a non-bifurcated optimal solution for GDP is NP-complete. Thus, the paper presents a novel scheme applying Generalized Dedicated Protection and Network Coding (GDP-NC) to ensure both optimal resource utilization among dedicated protection approaches and instantaneous recovery for single unicast flows, which can be split into multiple parts in all-optical networks. We demonstrate that the proposed GDP-NC survivable routing problem is polynomial-time solvable, owing to the ability to bifurcate flows. This flexibility comes at the expense of additional hardware for linear combination operations for the optical flows.

In this work we add a training phase to an Impairment Aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment (IA-RWA) algorithm so as to improve its performance. The initial IA-RWA algorithm is a multi-parametric algorithm where a vector of physical impairment parameters is assigned to each link, from which the impairment vectors of candidate lightpaths are calculated. The important issue here is how to combine these impairment parameters into a scalar that would reflect the true transmission quality of a path. The training phase of the proposed IA-RWA algorithm is based on an optimization approach, called Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), inspired by animal social behavior. The training phase gives the ability to the algorithm to be aware of the physical impairments even though the optical layer is seen as a black box. Our simulation studies show that the performance of the proposed scheme is close to that of algorithms that have explicit knowledge of the optical layer and the physical impairments. © 2011 IEEE.

We consider the problem of planning a mixed line rates (MLR) wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transport optical network. In such networks, different modulation formats are usually employed to support the transmission at different line rates. Previously proposed planning algorithms, have used a transmission reach limit for each modulation format/line rate, mainly driven by single line rate systems. However, transmission experiments in MLR networks have shown that physical layer interference phenomena are more significant between transmissions that utilize different modulation formats. Thus, the transmission reach of a connection with a specific modulation format/line rate depends also on the other connections that co-propagate with it in the network. To plan a MLR WDM network, we present routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms that take into account the adaptation of the transmission reach of each connection according to the use of the modulation formats/line rates in the network. The proposed algorithms are able to plan the network so as to alleviate interference effects, enabling the establishment of connections of acceptable quality over paths that would otherwise be prohibited. © 2011 IFIP.

Optical network design problems fall in the broad category of network optimization problems. We give a short introduction on network optimization and general algorithmic techniques that can be used to solve complex and difficult network design problems. We apply these techniques to address the static Routing and Wavelength Assignment problem that is related to planning phase of a WDM optical network. We present simulation result to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithmic solution. © 2011 IFIP.

A new hybrid signaling scheme is proposed in this work, that combines a two-way with an one-way reservation protocol. The key idea is to synchronize the assembly process with the reservation and hard reserve part of the end-to-end path in two way mode, for a duration equal to the burst assembly time. In this way, upon the arrival of the first packet in the assembly queue, the two-way reservation part of the signaling scheme may start simultaneously. Upon the completion of the burst assembly process, burst transmission may start immediately since the path has been successfully established for a certain number of hops. The framework that we propose benefits from the parallel execution of the signaling messages and the assembly process, and exploits the burstification delay to guarantee burst transmission for at least a part of the network path. © 2011 IFIP.

In this paper, we present the Greek School Network (GSN) and describe some of its advanced electronic services, designed to facilitate learning and collaboration. The main objective of the Greek School Network is to provide a network infrastructure for the interconnection of schools and the introduction of a wide range of telematic services to the educational community on a large scale. GSN is a safe educational network, whose services have received great acceptance and use by the school community. We present in detail the GSN electronic services (Web 2.0) related to elearning and social networking. We also provide statistical data that confirm the high use of the services. © 2011 IADIS.
