With the booming of multimedia services, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has introduced the evolved Multimedia Multicast/Broadcast Service (e-MBMS) feature for LTE systems. The main objective of MBMS is to introduce real broadcast distribution capabilities into cellular systems. This purposed 3GPP to introduce the MBMS over a Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) operation. In this work we investigate the provision of MBMS service over a combination of MBSFN and PTM transmission schemes. We focus on the file repair procedure, because the distribution of binary data via MBMS must result in 100% error-free downloaded files. In order to achieve this goal, MBMS offers a Forward Error Correction (FEC) mechanism. Our simulation results show that there are some file repair schemes that achieve better performance as far as different network configurations are concerned. Furthermore, we compare all the file recovery methods and evaluate them against various network parameters in a realistic simulation environment.

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has introduced the evolved Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (e-MBMS) feature for cellular systems as an evolution to the existing MBMS service. To support e-MBMS in Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems, 3GPP recommends the use of Point-to-Multipoint (PTM) transmissions and MBMS over a Single Frequency Network (MBSFN). MBSFN is a new feature where a time-synchronized common waveform is transmitted from multiple cells. In this paper we investigate the provision of MBMS service over a combination of MBSFN and PTM transmission methods. A cost analysis of the MBMS service is presented based on the transmission cost over all the interfaces and nodes of the LTE architecture. We evaluate the performance of this transmission scheme from telecommunication cost perspective and we compare it with other transmission schemes. The performance evaluation has been performed with the aid of a new simulation tool that estimates the cost for the MBMS provision under different network topologies, MBSFN deployments and user distributions.

We consider the problem of planning a mixed line rates (MLR) wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transport optical network. In such networks, different modulation formats are usually employed to support the transmission at different line rates. Previously proposed planning algorithms, have used a transmission reach limit for each modulation format/line rate, mainly driven by single line rate systems. However, transmission experiments in MLR networks have shown that physical layer interference phenomena are more significant between transmissions that utilize different modulation formats. Thus, the transmission reach of a connection with a specific modulation format/line rate depends also on the other connections that co-propagate with it in the network. To plan a MLR WDM network, we present routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms that take into account the adaptation of the transmission reach of each connection according to the use of the modulation formats/line rates in the network. The proposed algorithms are able to plan the network so as to alleviate interference effects, enabling the establishment of connections of acceptable quality over paths that would otherwise be prohibited.

Optical network design problems fall in the broad category of network optimization problems. We give a short introduction on network optimization and general algorithmic techniques that can be used to solve complex and difficult network design problems. We apply these techniques to address the static Routing and Wavelength Assignment problem that is related to planning phase of a WDM optical network. We present simulation result to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithmic solution.

A new hybrid signaling scheme is proposed in this work, that combines a two-way with an one-way reservation protocol. The key idea is to synchronize the assembly process with the reservation and hard reserve part of the end-to-end path in two way mode, for a duration equal to the burst assembly time. In this way, upon the arrival of the first packet in the assembly queue, the two-way reservation part of the signaling scheme may start simultaneously. Upon the completion of the burst assembly process, burst transmission may start immediately since the path has been successfully established for a certain number of hops. The framework that we propose benefits from the parallel execution of the signaling messages and the assembly process, and exploits the burstification delay to guarantee burst transmission for at least a part of the network path.

The principal lateral motion of an aircraft is described by a minimum of fourth order coupled state variable model. It is interesting to investigate how a decoupling controller can be designed. The Youla-parametrization is a simple method to design controllers. The KB-parametrization is a successful extension of this method for two-degree-of freedom (2DOF) systems. The paper extends this methodology for multivariable case and applies to the decoupling lateral control.

Congestion games constitute an important class of games in which computing an exact or even approximate pure Nash equilibrium is in general PLS-complete. We present a surprisingly simple polynomial-time algorithm that computes O(1)-approximate Nash equilibria in these games. In particular, for congestion games with linear latency functions, our algorithm computes (2 +ε)-approximate pure Nash equilibria in time polynomial in the number of players, the number of resources and 1/ε. It also applies to games with polynomial latency functions with constant maximum degree d: there, the approximation guarantee is d o(d) . The algorithm essentially identifies a polynomially long sequence of best-response moves that lead to an approximate equilibrium; the existence of such short sequences is interesting in itself. These are the first positive algorithmic results for approximate equilibria in non-symmetric congestion games. We strengthen them further by proving that, for congestion games that deviate from our mild assumptions, computing ρ-approximate equilibria is PLS-complete for any polynomial-time computable ρ.

This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of a passive UHF radio frequency identification system that was recently installed at a hospital in Cyprus. The three main pillars of this pilot project was patient identification, real-time location service of medical assets, and drug inventory control and monitoring. In this paper, we present the main steps followed during the design and implementation phases, some of the main features of the system application, and major finding drawn after the evaluation and testing of the system in a realistic environment.
Molecular dynamics method is used for computing equilibrium in many physical systems as well as a powerful solver used for minimization of criterion functions such as the stress function in multidimensional scaling. W...
