Background: Competitions in text mining have been used to measure the performance of automatic text processing solutions against a manually annotated gold standard corpus (GSC). The preparation of the GSC is time-consuming and costly and the final corpus consists at the most of a few thousand documents annotated with a limited set of semantic groups. To overcome these shortcomings, the CALBC project partners (PPs) have produced a large-scale annotated biomedical corpus with four different semantic groups through the harmonisation of annotations from automatic text mining solutions, the first version of the Silver Standard Corpus (SSC-I). The four semantic groups are chemical entities and drugs (CHED), genes and proteins (PRGE), diseases and disorders (DISO) and species (SPE). This corpus has been used for the First CALBC Challenge asking the participants to annotate the corpus with their text processing solutions. Results: All four PPs from the CALBC project and in addition, 12 challenge participants (CPs) contributed annotated data sets for an evaluation against the SSC-I. CPs could ignore the training data and deliver the annotations from their genuine annotation system, or could train a machine-learning approach on the provided pre-annotated data. In general, the performances of the annotation solutions were lower for entities from the categories CHED and PRGE in comparison to the identification of entities categorized as DISO and SPE. The best performance over all semantic groups were achieved from two annotation solutions that have been trained on the SSC-I. The data sets from participants were used to generate the harmonised Silver Standard Corpus II (SSC-II), if the participant did not make use of the annotated data set from the SSC-I for training purposes. The performances of the participants' solutions were again measured against the SSC-II. The main idea of this paper is an efficient power management mechanism in order to transmit to multiple receivers. The proposed mechanism consists of a module for efficiently managing the power when transmitting video over wireless networks by using the TFRC protocol reports and then adjusts transmission power using a binary-like approach. In order to extend to multiple receivers, several methods are proposed for calculating an appropriate power transmission level based on all TFRC reports and adjust the server's transmission power accordingly.

In this paper, we describe a power management mechanism for wireless video transmission using the TFRC protocol that takes into account feedback about the received video quality and tries to intelligently adapt transmitting power accordingly. The purpose of the mechanism is to utilize TFRC feedback and thus achieve a beneficial balance between the power consumption and the received video quality. We use simulation in order to compare and evaluate our approach. © 2010 IEEE.

The "small world" phenomenon, i.e., the fact that the global social network is strongly connected in the sense that every two persons are inter-related through a small chain of friends, has attracted research attention and has been strongly related to the results of the social psychologist's Stanley Milgram experiments;properties of social networks and relevant problems also emerge in peer-to-peer systems and their study can shed light on important modern network design properties. In this paper, we have experimentally studied greedy routing algorithms, i.e., algorithms that route information using "long-range" connections that function as shortcuts connecting "distant" network nodes. In particular, we have implemented greedy routing algorithms, and techniques from the recent literature in networks of line and grid topology using parallelization for increasing efficiency. To the best of our knowledge, no similar attempt has been made so far. ©2010 IEEE.

An approximate analytical performance model for multistage interconnection networks with backpressure blocking mechanism

Multistage Interconnection Networks (MINs) are used to interconnect different processing modules in various parallel systems or on high bandwidth networks. In this paper an integrated performance methodology is presented. A new approximate performance model for self-routing MINs consisting of symmetrical switches which are subject to a backpressure blocking mechanism is analyzed. Based on this, the steady-state distribution of the queue utilization is estimated and then all important performance metrics are calculated. Moreover, a general evaluation factor which helps in choosing a better performance MIN in comparison with other similar MIN architecture specifications is defined. The model was exemplified for the case of symmetrical single- and double-buffered MINs. It provides accurate results and converges very quickly. The obtained results were validated by extensive simulations and were compared to existing related work in the literature. © 2010 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

It is shown here that the problem of computing a Nash equilibrium for two-person games can be polynomially reduced to an indefinite quadratic programming problem involving the spectrum of the adjacency matrix of a strongly connected directed graph on n vertices, where n is the total number of players' strategies. Based on that, a new method is presented for computing approximate equilibria and it is shown that its complexity is a function of the average spectral energy of the underlying graph. The implications of the strong connectedness properties on the energy and on the complexity of the method is discussed and certain classes of graphs are described for which the method is a polynomial tirne approximation scheme (PTAS). The worst case complexity is bounded by a subexponential function in the total number of strategies n and a comparison is made with a previously reported method with subexponential complexity.

In this work, we present a concrete framework, based on web services-oriented architecture, for integrating small programmable objects in the web of things. Functionality and data gathered by the Small Programmable Objects (SPO) are exposed using Web Services. Based on this, by exploiting XML encoding, SPO can be comprehensible by any web application. The architecture proposed is focused in providing secure and efficient interoperability between SPO and the web. Additionally, the proposed architecture provides management capabilities for deploying, maintaining and operating SPO applications across multiple networks. We present the multilayer architecture of our system and its implementation, which uses a combination of Java Standard and Micro Editions. Finally, we present a case study presenting our implementation. In this application we use SunSPOTs, which are wireless network motes developed by Sun Microsystems. © 2010 IEEE.

Based on recent advances on convex design for Large-Scale Control Systems (LSCSs) and robust and efficient LSCS self-tuning/adaptation, a methodology is proposed in this paper which aims at providing an integrated LSCS-design, applicable to large-scale systems of arbitrary scale, heterogeneity and complexity and capable of: 1) Providing stable, efficient and arbitrarily-close-to-optimal LSCS performance;2) Being able to incorporate a variety of constraints, including limited control constraints as well as constraints that are nonlinear functions of the system controls and states;3) Being intrinsically self-tunable, able to rapidly and efficiently optimize LSCS performance when short-, medium- or long-time variations affect the large-scale system;4) Achieving the above, while being scalable and modular. The purpose of the present paper is to provide the main features of the proposed control design methodology.

The prime objective of the Greek School Network (GSN) is the provisioning of a network and services infrastructure for the interconnection of school laboratories of informatics, so that modern educational and pedagogical methods and models can be applied. The GSN is currently delivering a wide range of educational services to users, ranging from forums and instant messaging to video-on-demand and teleconferencing. Managed and operated by a consortium of educational and research public bodies, the network adopts flexible, interoperable, secure solutions in order to construct operational mechanisms for the support of the educational services and considers the open model for service development, deployment, delivery and management. The current paper presents an overview of the service infrastructure constructed to address the problem of delivering catholic educational services across the school domain. It presents some services such as the asynchronous and synchronous tele-education and virtual classroom services and the underlying service layers that provide the infrastructure for user management, security and integration. © 2010 IADIS.

3GPP has standardized the use of forward error correction for the provision of reliable data transmission in the mobile multicast framework. In this paper we present a study of the impact of application layer forward error correction on power control during mobile multicast transmission. The evaluation is performed with the aid of a novel scheme that allows the simulation of FEC impact on both streaming delivery and download delivery over a multicast session. It is important that the proposed scheme incorporates the properties of an evolved mobile network, as they are determined by the 3GPP specifications. © 2010 IEEE.
